I've never understood why people get triggered by the way other people play these games, they paid their money they can play however they like.
Very cold take. Ice cold. Competitive achievement hunting is fun because of the challenge - cheat features remove the challenge, and if everybody is special, nobody is special. It's a shame because all of these achievements are easily doable with a bit of effort and elbow grease, and it's galling because there's no way to differentiate between the people who cheat and the people who play legitimately.
I agree with this. Though I'd say the devs aren't taking this into account when they revamp the classics and release them with these features. They realize that in today's society time is more of a commodity than ever and it's fueled people's ever-growing impatience and short attention spans. That or maybe the features will attract more consumers and that's good for business.
I've personally avoided the features throughout the game, but I'm pretty indifferent if players want to use them since the devs put the features in the game, which is why I can't justify competitive achievement-hunting in Final Fantasy IX unfortunately--unless I adapted and made use of them to keep up but decided against this. I can see how they're cheap and negate many of the challenging aspects of the game.
It's a somber feeling to think that people are skipping through the game if they haven't experienced it before, but ultimately that's their choice. I'm enjoying it just as I have many times in the past and that's what matters to me. This is an achievement site however, so to many, achievements are all that matter to them.
I agree with both you and Xboxoholic, and I apologize if my initial offended anyone, yeah people can play however the hell they want, I just don't agree with the fact that the boosters don't disable achievements. I remember attempting an excalibur II run back in the day, I was considered "the best" among my group of friends in school when it came to FF games, so when we all heard that, in order to get Excalibur II you had to speedrun the whole game in under 12 hours everyone it was impossible, so to me this was the ultimate challenge, to prove I WAS the best and do what everyone thought was impossible.
This was before we all had internet and gamefaqs etc, so I couldn't even look to a guide for tips, long story short, I missed it by 25 fucking minutes, and never had the heart to attempt it again. So upon seeing this in the achievement list, along with other things like defeating Ozma, and 1000 skips (which i'm not even gonna attempt, because fuck that shit) This actually looked like a really tough completion, which I was looking forward to attempting, except for that impossible skip rope shit.
But instead it has been made an absolute joke thanks to these "boosters", which, let's be honest here, permanent trance, ATB gauge always full, and every attack, ability, magic or skill dealing or healing 9999 is basically god mode, coupled with the speed boost, boosting the emulation of the game by at least 4x, whilst leaving the in game counter locked to ACTUAL play time, totally removes any and all difficulty to all of the achievements, with the exception of the skipping one, which i've recently learned that since this can be played on PC, you can now "earn" an 11/10 difficulty achievement by simply going for a walk while a macro does it's magic.
This is lame as fuck, and turns a difficult and challenging completion into a total joke, i'm stubborn and old fashioned and hate cheating, and refuse to use these "boosters" out of principle, I can't be proud of achieving something if I had to cheat to do it. But that's just me, if people wanna cheat and ruin the game for themselves, that's their choice, and if you pay for a game, you're free to play it however you see fit. I'm just pissed off that the devs put these features in and didn't disable achievements when they were used. It pisses me off that those of us who have some pride and want to overcome difficult challenges have our ratios dragged down because the devs allowed people with less skill/patience to cheat and reap the rewards with no effort whatsoever....
