I have enjoyed what I have played so far. Since it takes place at the same time if not a little before the other 2 games you really won't need to play through 1 & 2 to enjoy it. It's kinda more like Bloodborne than Dark Souls IMO lotta roll left whack roll right whack. Fury is such an awesome character too, like a female Kratos but more apathetic than angry and I enjoy her more than the others. Bottom line if you do not have much time and need to play one of the 3 before Genesis this is the one I recommend.
Bonus: the music is by one of the fellas that did the God of War games and is amazing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqnLxdBrqHA Interesting, the general consensus in the DS community is that this game was a major step down, especially from DS2. I guess it kind of depends on how much you like the "souls-like" genre though. For most, it was a big departure from what made the franchise so good and alienated a lot of the games fans.
They did redeem themselves a bit when the "Classic" play mode was introduced though. Made the game a bit more accessible and brought it more in line with how 1 & 2 play.
It's not a bad game though, just didn't feel quite like a Darksiders game. Strangely, I also thought Fury was a totally boring character with a bland story arc, but to each their own!
Personally, I would say DS2 is the best one to play if you only have time for one, though the original will be most like the gameplay style of Genesis (which is excellent from the demo I have played!). Play all 3 if you can though, because it is an excellent (and massively underrated) franchise
