The fact is the vast majority of the games aren't region locked and don't need to be on a separate store. The whole set up is dumb: essentially you can't use your gift cards on Original and 360 games on the Xbox One. I've had issue with the site so now I'm having to switch to my 360 just to use my gift cards/rewards points. Think I'm just going to change my Hotmail account region and if I can't boost for 90 days then so be it.
It’s not dumb, it’s working as intended. And you are wrong, over half the 360 games are region locked. And I’m not even talking about not being able to buy a NTSC-J game from a PAL console, so you need a NTSC-J console as well to do that. Sure, you can use a VPN to circumvent IP locks, but that was always considered as breaking the ToS. When Bluray came out, they didn’t remove the region locks from DVDs. Yeah, I know region free DVD players are legal in some countries, but here Xboxes can only play region 4, and most of my DVDs are region 2 and 1.
You cannot buy 360 content anonymously with gift cards over the web, you must do it from your console. If you commit fraud getting Xbox One content Microsoft can revoke your license(s). With Xbox 360 they cannot do that, so will permanently ban the console you used for the fraud. This is why you have to be very careful buying a second hand 360. It is easily solved by using a credit card as you are no longer anonymous, but not everyone can get a credit card.
Anyway I have region hopped a lot - South Africa, Hungary, Czech, Switzerland, US, UK, Australia, Germany, Canada. You can do this once every 3 months. It’s so funny being stuck in places like Germany for 90 days, because your 360 dash is in German, the movie trailers are for German movies, free themes and avatar items are for German products (Axe not Lynx), etc.
Fun fact: in 2005/2006 Xbox 360 was not IP locked. I could change my console to US to get free themes and watch US movie trailers and music videos, then change it to UK and do the same. It was a sad day when they turned on IP locking, as themes, trailers, videos, and several free games were never made available in my region. Even today some games are not released in NZ.
Your Live account still functions as normal - you can still boost and play online. If you have 7 months and 3 days Gold left, they will convert it to 8 full months of Gold. Obviously any local currency you have left on your account you will not be able to spend on 360 content until you switch back. If you do want to buy anything during the 3 months you will need to add new currency using gift cards. MSP made it much easier as it was a universal currency.
You will only be able to get the 360 GwG for that region, which might be the reason you switched. But the following month when that country get’s “Splosion Man“ or “The Maw” again you might regret it.
Xbox One being both region and PAL/NTSC/NTSC-J free (except China) was fantastic. Which does make the 360 look bad/dumb in comparison, but it is what it is, just like DVDs.
