I was a big fan of the SSX series but I also thoroughly enjoyed Steep. They aren't terribly comparable though you are right. Steep is in my opinion a perfect mix between simulation and arcade - you can still do some silly tricks but you have to be a lot more careful about when you do them and how you land etc. You've also got the ability to do hand gliding, skiing, snowboarding and wing suit/flying squirrel.
There are a few challenges dotted around the huge and beautiful group of mountains which will definitely cause you problems but you're unlikely to come across these until later in the game when you're more familiar with it and hopefully enjoying it to dedicate the time to those harder ones!
Hopefully this has helped a bit, i highly recommend it if you're a fan of extreme sports - it is also a very good looking game. The criticism it endured on launch and since is unjust as it is not a game you can pick up on your first time. After a couple of hours you'll start to get the feel for it and fall in love...!
Edit: Do note that the DLC rarely seems to go on sale, in fact i've never seen road to the olympics make the rounds. So if you plan to complete it I suggest going for the bundle in this weeks' sale as opposed to the standalone game. I might have to re-buy the game to take advantage of the slightly reduced DLC and get road to the olympics separately.
Thank you for the feedback, I had the same questions. I've played a lot of old snowboarding games, from the Cool Boarders series to 1080, and really enjoyed OG SSX, Tricky and 3. I keep seeing this come up now and again and your post will probably get me to finally pull the trigger.
I watched a video just now, very pretty looking game and I expect to be very bad at it at the start. Maybe forever.
