NOTE: As you can see, this guide is not yet completed. Feel free to break in. I'm making an index so the guide posts don't need to be in a row.

This guide shows basic systems or features of Espgaluda II Black Label. The game has very complex system so that I felt I'd better make a guide like this, rather than to explain features in each achievement guides.

This guide is focused on getting achievements, so do not show advanced features of this game only needed for getting high scores.

I've tried to make the contents as accurate as possible, but this game has truly complicated systems, so I may have misunderstood something. Any suggestions / corrections would be greatly appreciated.

    Controls and the Game Screen
This section shows basic controls and elements on the game screen.

    Controls

Use D-pad or Left stick to move player.

4 buttons are used to attack or to activate special features. These buttons can be assigned to any buttons you wish in OPTION -> Controller setting.

Shot button (default A button): Tap this to fire normal shots. Holding this button will fire Rapier. Rapier has more intense firepower than normal shots, but player's movement will be slower while using Rapier.

Kakusei button (default B button): Use this button to enter/exit special Kakusei state or Zetsushikai state. See other section for further explanation of these states.

Guard Barrier button (default Right trigger): Similar to the bomb in other games. Holding this button, you can activate a field to make the player invincible. When you release this button, a powerful laser attack is made against enemies. You need Guard Barrier gauge (displayed in the left bottom corner) to activate this barrier.

Turbo Shot button (default X button): By holding this button, you can automatically rapid fire normal shots.

    Changing Button Configuration

The default button configuration may be not the best. You can change this in optional settings. To access this settings, first select the game mode. At main menu (where items "1P START" "OPTION" "EXIT" are shown), select OPTION and press Start button. Then select Controller to enter the setting.

You have to set controller's configuration for each game mode separately.

    The Game Screen

I'll explain this using a screen shot on the game's playing manual. Please see p.13 of the manual.

    (1) Boss HP bar: Shows HP of the boss and mini-boss. Usually, the HP bar is divided into several parts. These parts corresponds to the different forms of the boss. For each form, the boss have different attacks (and sometimes the boss's appearance also changes).

    (2) Combo bar: A special bar used only in Black Label mode.

    (3) Player Life: This shows how many life the player has.

    (4) Kakusei Counter: This counter shows how many Spirit Stones (green jewel like items) you've collected. You use this when you enter Kakusei state or Zetsushikai state.

    (5) Gold Counter: This counter shows how many Gold items you've collected. You use this when you enter Zetsushikai state.

    (6) Player: Shows player character. Only the cross in center of the player can be hit by enemy bullets.

    (7) Guard Barrier gauge: This gauge is used to activate Guard Barrier.

    (8) Zetsumuteki gauge: This special gauge only appears at Black Label mode. While you have this gauge, several defensive features help the player (muteki = invincible in Japanese).

    Basic Terms and Concepts
This section explains basic terms and concepts in this game.

    Kakusei (also Kakuseishikai)
One of the distinctive feature of this game, Kakusei state enables slowdown of the game and gives the player a chance to unleash powerful attack or get a great score. The detailed effects of Kakusei state differs with each game mode, but generally includes slowdown of the game and power-up of the players attacks.

To enter Kakusei state, you must first have Kakusei counter. While you have Kakusei counter, hit Kakusei button for a short time, and you'll enter Kakusei state. In Kakusei state, your Kakusei counter will gradually decrease. When the Kakusei counter reaches 0, the player enters another state "Kakusei Over". See the next item for this.

In Kakusei state, a circular effect appears around the player. In this circle, there's a red gauge showing how much Kakusei counter you currently have. You can check this gauge instead of the Kakusei counter on the top left corner.

You can manually exit Kakusei state by pressing Kakusei button again.

    Kakusei Over (also Red Run)
This is a state you'll enter when you run up Kakusei counter. In this state,
    1. The game don't slowdown. Rather enemy bullets become faster than normal state.
    2. Enemy bullets' color turns to red. This is why playing in this state is called 'Red Run'.

At the same time you enter Kakusei Over state, a circular effect with blue gauge appears. When this blue gauge go round, Kakusei Over state goes to the next level, making enemy bullet speed even more faster. Kakusei Over level starts at level 0 and can be raised to the maximum of level 3. If Kakusei Over level reached 3, the blue circular effect disappears.

Raising Kakusei Over level can make the game more difficult, but at higher level, enemy drops more items. So don't hesitate to raise level if you can manage the enemy bullet speed in Red Run (in Novice modes, it's not very difficult to play in level 3).

Kakusei Over level 3 is also a condition to make "hatred filled Seseri" (the True stage 5 boss) appear.

    Zetsushikai (also KakuseiZetsushikai)
Zetsushikai is a more powerful mode of Kakusei and requires both Kakusei counter and Gold counter. The exact feature of Zetsushikai differs with each game mode, but always different from Kakusei in some way, so it's important to know which to use.

To enter Zetsushikai, while you both have Kakusei counter and Gold counter, hold Kakusei button for a while. In Zetsushikai state, there's a circular effect similar to that of Kakusei state, but it also have additional white decoration around it.

While in Zetsushikai state, both Kakusei counter and Gold counter decrease gradually. What state you'll enter after Zetsushikai depends on which counter depletes first. If Gold counter reaches 0 before Kakusei counter, player will shift to Kakusei state. If Kakusei counter reaches 0 before Gold, then player will enter Kakusei Over.

General notes on Kakusei and Zetsushikai
Kakusei and Zetsushikai are quite complicated system and requires player's expertise to use them wisely. Until you become familiar with the game, I recommend not using them - unless some achievement call for that. smile

You'll need Spirit Stone and Gold item to make use of Kakusei and Zetsushikai. Actual way to get them differs with each mode, but here are some general tips.

To get Spirit Stone, defeat enemies while in normal state.

To get Gold item, defeat an enemy in Kakusei state at the moment when there're many enemy bullets on the screen.

    Index to the In-Game Tutorial
I'm actually wondering whether this section is ever useful. smile

This section shows index to the in-game tutorial and list what each tutorial section is about. Since all tutorials are in Japanese, they are not understandable, but watching carefully, I think it may be possible to get some hint.

Feel free to post any feedback about this, but I first make clear that I'm not going to make a full translation. That will need a few weeks. laugh

    More Terms and Concepts
This section explains non-basic terms and concepts of this game.

    Hatred Filled Seseri
This is the True Boss of stage 5 (this game has no True Last Boss). The appearance of this boss is just same as normal Seseri (I suppose so), but her attack is far more fierce than the normal. In Novice Mode, the difference may be not apparent on her 1st form. But on her 2nd form, the distinct attack that shoots at player from all directions shows clearly that she's the True Boss.

Conditions you must meet to make her appear are as follows.
    1. You have to reach Kakusei Over level 3 once, at anywhere before the stage 5 boss battle.
    2. You haven't continued before the stage 5 boss battle.
    3. You haven't lose any life before the stage 5 boss battle.

Zetsumuteki Gauge (Black Label / Black Novice only)
    ['Zetsu'=Absolute + 'muteki'=Invincibility]
This blue gauge appears in Black Label / Black Novice modes, on right bottom of the screen. While you have this gauge remaining, two defensive features Zetsushigan and Zetsumuteki state will help you (explained later).

Zetsumuteki gauge decreases when you use these two features. It also decreases slowly in boss battle if you are in normal state (= not in Kakusei, Zetsushikai or Kakusei Over state).

Zetsumuteki gauge can be increased in two way. First it increases a bit when you got a Gold item. And when you are in Kakusei Over state from Zetsushikai state, Zetsumuteki gauge will automaticaly recover gradually. If you enter Kakusei Over state from Kakusei state, this automatic recover won't work. But, all defeated enemies drop Gold items in Kakusei Over state, so you can still make a good recovery of gauge in that state.

NOTE: I've translated 'Zetsu' as 'absolute' in this section, but strictly speaking, that's the meaning of a compound word 'zettai (zetsu+tai)'. To be precise 'Zetsu' alone is better translated as 'peerless' or 'unequaled', but I love the sound of 'absolute'. smile

This is a mega nice guide, I like it much.

"Now I can do more than just dodging and holding down A :D"

Maybe you can add some basics about the different game modes?

Just 3 questions. I've been playing offline for weeks in order to get the "turn 10,000,000 bullets into gold" cumulative achivements to no avail. I've already unlocked the "turn into gems" and "let 'em be fired at you" ones though.

    Now my questions are:

    1) Does anybody know if this particular achievement is glitched and/or it can't be unlocked offline?

    2) Do the Zetshushikai Over bullets (they aren't added to gold counter) count for this one?

    3) I changed Game Config increasing difficulty level for a couple of plays just for trying. Then I reverted it back to Defaults. What happened to those cumulative cancelled bullets? Are they still there so I can keep adding to the sum or did I just lost them for being a smartass and now I have to start over again?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey mate,

i'd justlike to say many thanks for the guide to the basics of this game, i love bullet hell shmups, but suck at them so much, never manage to work out the scoring, or firing mechanics.

hopefully now i will be able to do better than just 1cc's on BL novice (that mode is far too easy, but not good for scoring if you don't know how.)

i'll put what little i remember of this to use when trying my next few plays through

I just got the game yesterday. This guide and all of your solutions are very helpful. Including your solutions on other JP games. I have all but the two most expensive shmups and want to become good at shmups, they are fun as hell. So yes, 10 years after you posted this it is still being used so thank you.
Back into gaming as much as possible while sharing my bad ass TV with the GF.
