I would not recommend starting the Yakuza franchise with any of these games XD For those who are intrested, start with either Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami or at a push Yakuza Like A Dragon

Shame the collection is not on sale, I would have bought it. The individual games are on sale but all 3 totals just £1 less than the collection via GP discount. Will wait for collection be on sale for £20 or less

"Starting today, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold subscribers can play three games for free, thanks to Free Play Days."
A boring free to play days as can play these games with Ultimate anyway without free play days

Odd choice for the FTP weekend. Story-wise they all rely heavily on events of the previous games and going in blind would leave most completely lost.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m one of those who takes every chance to big up the Yakuza series because the games are super fun. But please don’t start with 3.

Yeah echoing what others have said! Do yourself a favour and start with 0!!

You won't regret it. 0, Kiwami 1 and 2 are fab, 3 can be a little hard to slog through then 4 and 5 are great. 6 is pretty good too!

Yakuza 3 in TLDR terms is quite simple.
The game made me hate Okinawa

Yeah Yakuza 3 and 4 are definitely my bottom two in the series. Please just go play 0, Like a Dragon, or Judgment if you want to try this series out.

I really wish they would remaster Yakuza: Dead Souls. I hate having to bust out my PS3 to play that one.

Yakuza 3 is great. Coming off of the PS2 games it's a huge step forward in open world gameplay.

The reason everyone here is naysaying it is because while they are remastered, they are very dated compared to Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2 which isn't so much a remaster but the games rebuilt from the ground up.

Yakuza 4 and 5 introduced multiple characters into the series. Yakuza 5 is great but the story is deep and the content is massive. Nobody will finish it in one weekend.

The series story goes in Order 0-6

    However the games play like

Yakuza 3 first PS3 title combat is pretty stiff and graphics are the worst looking ones if you don't count the PS2 titles
Yakuza 4 feels close to three with only so many new additions
Yakuza 5 feels smoother in combat and graphics are improved but still not on par with what PS4 titles can do but there's so much to do and see the game is meaty as hell

Yakuza 0 first PS4 title, added fighting style mechanic, combat doesnt feel like 5 but not in a bad way, really showed the next gen potential of a Yakuza game

Yakuza Kiwami, it's the very first Yakuza game but upgraded to play just like Yakuza 0 with a few changes here and there. Fighting style system is still present and Majima scenes are extended. Another great title and when compared to PS2 it's mind blowing

Yakuza 6, amazing , insane, incredible, they took the series and made it all it could be on PS4. Unfortunately they didn't manage to get the frame rate past 30 but huzzah with the power of the Xbox Series X and FPS Boost. Yakuza 6 runs like a dream and while it isn't overflowing with shit to do like Yakuza 5, there's still plenty of content and the combat is just so good. The Fighting Style system introduced in 0 and Kiwami is removed tho if you care about that sort of thing. If you can play it on a Series X please do it makes the game run like it's Kiwami 2

Yakuza Kiwami 2, the best in the series imo, It's the PS2 game which was already considered great, completly rebuilt to play like Yakuza 6 and it's just my absolute favorite. So much fun, great content, fighting is awesome, runs smooth, it's such a great game and Kiwami 2 is such a huge upgrade to the series it:s hard to play 2 and then load up 3 because the age you see in 3 is so drastic when you compare it to Kiwami 2.

Free play weekend? Just about enough time to watch a couple of cutscenes then.

Per the Yakuza Games subreddit, I would recommend the following play order:

    Yakuza Kiwami
    Yakuza Kiwami 2
    Yakuza 3
    Yakuza 4
    Yakuza 5
    Yakuza 0
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

If you keep in mind the Kiwami games are rebuilds of the first two games, this keeps the game in release order and preserves what would otherwise spoil or cheapen story beats from the later games if you start with 0.

I think you and I have had this discussion before, but there are also a LOT of people that recommend Yakuza 0 first, and I agree. I think Kiwami 1 feels significantly worse to play (I still love it) and can easily turn people off from the series. I hate wanting to get to the next story beat or do some fun substory and getting attacked by Majima. I just want to continue the story. Starting with Yakuza 0 really doesn't ruin anything. I also think the story from Kiwami would have been much less interesting without playing 0 first. I just wouldn't have cared NEARLY as much about Nishiki.
In fact, I think the vast majority of people recommend starting with 0

I think Trombonafide makes some fine points and it's worth considering starting with Kiwami, but people should be aware he's not in the majority recommending this. There absolutely are people that agree with him with completely reasonable arguments. Here's an IGN article I found in my google search making the case for Kiwami

Just worth considering both sides of it. It's a great series and I would absolutely encourage people to try it out either way! toastsmile

I don't agree with the reason to start with 1 at all.

Charm isn't what drives the story it's character development. After the events of zero you have so much more reason to care about the start of 1. It starts off pretty intense and you immediately care what the hell is going to happen next.

Starting with 3 will have you playing with the most dated game control and graphic wise, but you'll have no idea whats going on in the story. Even with the recap included in the intro you'll just be like "oh okay"

I went into Kiwami with no knowledge of the series and was instantly hooked. The beginning of the game sets the stage with plenty of drama and intrigue to hook the player.
