Eh. It’s more so an element of the game, and it’s very much a side thing compared to playing the levels. How it’s incorporated here doesn’t really fit the TA description regardless.
Visual Novels generally consist of static images or videos accompanied by text or spoken dialogue, and generally lack gameplay challenges in favour of pure storytelling. The player is usually confronted with choices which determine the branch of the storyline shown.
The third criteria admittedly is a bit of an oddball since that’s only the case under specific circumstances in one specific situation, but the second makes that irrelevant.
