NBA Jam Now Shipping As A Standalone Product

Originally to be included with NBA Elite 11, which has been delayed

In a case of both good and bad news, EA Sports President Peter Moore has announced today (via his blog) two key bits of info for Xbox 360 NBA fans.

First, the good news: NBA Jam will be getting its own standalone release on the 360. When it was originally confirmed back in July, EA announced that the only way to get the game would be to pick up NBA Elite 11, with a one-time use download code for Jam included in the box.

While no substantial information has been revealed yet (like whether it'll be a retail or XBLA game, a release date or a price), Moore stated that EA are "going to ship NBA JAM as a standalone product on the Xbox360 in time for the holidays."

The second bit of good news: EA will continue to offer free roster updates for NBA LIVE 10 throughout the 2010-11 season, including all players and Dynamic DNA updates, free of charge.

Now the bad news: the reason that Jam is getting a standalone release is because NBA Elite 11 has been delayed until next year. Previously scheduled for release in October, it seems bad feedback from the recently-released demo has encouraged EA to work on the game some more before shipping it. Which is actually good news, in a way.

Moore summed up the decision best:
We are creating a game that will introduce several breakthrough features that have been missing from the basketball genre. Unfortunately, NBA ELITE 11 is not yet ready and we have made a decision to delay next month’s launch. We are going to keep working until we’re certain we can deliver a breakthrough basketball experience.

As with all of our titles, we continue to evaluate and improve the code right up until launch. Feedback from consumers is a very important part of the process . NBA ELITE had the benefit of play-testing, a demo and a lot of our own research. All that feedback revealed some concerns about gameplay polish, so we’ve listened to your feedback, and made a judgment that the game would benefit from more time in development.
Personally, I'm not much of a sports fan, but I do enjoy arcade-style sports games like NBA Jam, so this news is pretty awesome! And for fans of the more authentic NBA game experience, just know that the delay will be worth it, and that the game will no doubt hugely benefit from the additional development time. Good news for all gamers!

i will still buy NBA elite 11 because I am sure I will need the online code for the achievements. Lets hope their are no online achievements because the only other reason to buy it was for NBA JAM being exclusive to NBA Elite 11. Not anymore SWEET!! Please EA no online achievements so I can save money.

edit: just read not being released till next year? WTF thats gotta be a first for a sports game not coming out at the beginning of that games sports season. They may lose sales because of this.

Very very cool of EA to continue with roster updates for this season for last year's game. Actually, sports games should do this anyway, as there is no great technical leap from year to year as it is. Even though I'm a 2K guy, it's still kinda sad to see EA basketball struggling so bad. Oh well, maybe they'll get their act together, and in the meantime, NBA Jam comes to the 360 which is good news.

Unfortunately there are 4 online achievements worth 50 points of the games 200.
    Play a ranked match
    Win a ranked match
    Win 10 ranked matches
Win a ranked match while leading after each quarter.

    Thought I'd let you know.

That may not be anymore. The standalone may be 1000 points.

Wow for the 1st time ever, EA Sports will not be releasing a basketball game of any sort during their release, of course u know there will be no NCAA Basketball 11 this fall either because they decided to not put the game in development for this year, oh well, Im sure we will all be satisfied with NBA 2k11 :)

i was talking about NBA Elite 11's achievement list not NBA JAM's. I dont mind if NBA Jam has online achievements as if it is an arcade game it wont require an additional purchase of a code to play online (atleast i hope it won't).

I played the Elite demo and hated it. I guess I wasnt the only one. Yays for the NBA JAM. Hopefully it will be the full game.

I hope they update the rosters for NBA Jam before it's released, if the above screenshot is any indication...

Still on the fence for Elite, really enjoyed NBA Live 08 and 09. NBA Live 10 was really good until some of the dynamic matches started to glitch and not work properly. Even after gettin 1000G from Live 10, dynamic season mode kept me playing everytime Celtics played smile. But once it stop working i just stopped playing, but anyway...

Has anyone who played and liked NBA Live 10, tried the demo for Elite? Ive will check it out eventually, but if i have to pay to play online despite buying the game new then its a no go!

Hurrah! Now I have this and yugioh to look forward to! Though there's so little news about the latter I'm beginning to have doubts...

Thank god - I really didn't want NBA Elite 11, but I really wanted this.

    He's on fire!

Alright, alright, I know it was done last thread, but come on the voice-overs are awesome. :P

It'd have to be XBLA I reckon, I can't imagine them remaking NBA Jam to retail standards, and honestly it's tackiness and retro-feel are what made it awesome, so no change will make it better, IMO, except maybe some minor tweaks to the video and sound quality like the other emulated titles on XBLA. Also, I can't imagine them remaking a whole game for what was originally intended to be a freebie bundled with another game.

We'll see though, still got my fingers crossed for XBLA. 'Cause I don't want to have to buy it....

    WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is great news. NBA Jam on XBLA this year, possibly updated to include a career mode ala the Wii version. If not, online play will still be there! Also no NBA Elite this year, just NBA2k11, meaning people who want a sim bball game can't make the wrong decision this year and get ripped off by EA. That's like a win-win-win.

The only downfall is there's no date yet. And also they could end up selling it retail. I really think they should think about that, and how it will sell, but it's EA, so they probably won't.

For me, if it's on XBLA it's a first-day purchase, if it's retail I'll wait until it drops to $5-10.

Great news on both accounts. Everyone I've talked to has said they planned to go with the 2K game anyhow (as usual in recent years.) If this gives EA some time to get NBA Elite in better shape, all the better. And if anything, maybe the stuttered release will improve sales. It won't be in direct competition with 2K, for one thing. There will be a big enough gap between the two, now.

It was obvious that NBA Jam was eventually going to be sold by itself, anyhow. Much like Call of Duty Classic, where it was originally just available through purchase with the MW2 special editions. It encouraged more people to buy those at launch, and then once it went up for sale on the marketplace it saw a second surge in profit. The same setup was to be used with NBA Jam and bundling it solely with NBA Elite to start off.

Skipping out on this second step (of selling it on the marketplace) would mean a huge loss in potential profit for EA. Especially once the sales of NBA Elite had dwindled. Thinking that EA would miss out on such a blatant profit device would be like hoping for Activision to stop making Call of Duty games after the Infinity Ward fallout. laugh Actually, this would be even sillier, because the game is already fully developed and ready for Live Arcade release.

The game's achievements are already up on the xbox.com servers, and it's a Live Arcade title. It will not be converted into a retail release. That would cost them a hell of a lot more money and time to put together (without a return in profit to make it worthwhile.) It will launch just prior to the holidays, which is likely when it was set to do so anyhow. Let us rejoice, as soon we shall be jamming. And now the local Target stores will not be getting flooded with returned copies of NBA Elite that mysteriously have their download code missing.
