Game Discussion: Fez

FEZ - AWESOME BUT STILL BUGGY

  • Posted on 18 April 12 at 16:50, Edited on 08 May 12 at 01:45 by fightclubdollPermalink
Fez debuted this week and it wasted no time attracting fans.
Jessica Chobot, Tim Schafer and scores others have notably announced their blissful praise of Fez this week following the launch. Indeed it's likely that you and many people you know have been busily hunting for cubes and working to solve the puzzles, climb the walls, decipher the maps and all that make Fez a unique and challenging, yet charming experience.

After very successful previews at conventions like PAX, the game garnered high praise from convention goers and gaming industry journalists in attendance. The buzz generated made the release one that was eagerly anticipated. The title has proven to be extremely popular as indicated by the latest XBLA activity figures, as reported by Eurogamer, Fez came in at number one. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-04-18-fez-tops-xbox-l...

Alas, the launch also revealed numerous bugs that have been plaguing players as they try to solve the many puzzles and guide Gomez to collect the cubes and artifacts hidden across many worlds within Fez.
In statements posted over the weekend, Polytron, makers of Fez, announced that they were aware of the "pretty serious" and "game breaking" bugs and are hard at work attempting to correct the problems.

Xbox Live editor Dan Magnum (who you may know from the Xbox feature Sentuamessage) had a rude awakening himself this week when his own game glitched in a manner many had been reporting about on Twitter over the weekend: "It appears my Fez cloud save has somehow set me back about five hours. I will refrain from crying until I confirm if it's the same at home."

As for my own experience, at unpredictable moments when I guide Gomez through a doorway or gate, I might randomly exit to the Xbox dashboard. That is one very frustrating bug to encounter while gaming. As I had heard about save glitches over the weekend, but not this, I did decide to contact Polytron to report the specifics and see if a fix was forthcoming. They told me that "it's an XNA bug. bastion had the same issues with older xboxes."

In addition to crashes and data loss, graphical glitches have also been reported and are on schedule to be included in the repair patches,
as reported this week in Venture Beat. Additionally, some older Xbox models cannot support the game at all. http://venturebeat.com/2012/04/14/polytron-acknowledges-seve...

So far, those are the known glitches affecting Fez on XBLA. So, especially if you are using cloud saves or an older/arcade model Xbox, be aware of the bugs you may have to deal with as the patches are being compiled.

As for Fez, it is a wonderful game and not one to be missed. Though by its popularity, it's clear that the bugs have not dissuaded the players from buying. At a mere 800 MS points, and hours, no ...make that DAYS of gameplay, it's an outstanding value. Moreover, the game itself is challenging enough for serious gamers and puzzle fans, while being family friendly and accessible to a huge range of ages, (rated E for Everyone) with no content that parents or kids have to fear. I'm delighted with the game even as the bugs have hampered my progress. Once they're fixed, what's left is a truly great game destined to be an arcade classic.

This would probably be better suited as a review

It is something of a review and game news... but hopefully it can also evolve into discussion.
And if there is a forum category called "Reviews," I have not found it anywhere.

Fez has plenty to discuss. There is that Black Monolith and so many other puzzles... and the difficulties of finding yourself, let alone the collectible items in the many worlds, leave plenty of questions to ask and answer.

The beauty of these posts is that they can continue to grow. Isn't that how any discussion starts. One person has to say something first..

just don't buy it day one and any problems will soon be revealed, its not like its some competitve multipley fps where a few days will see you so far behind that you'll never catch up.

It is a great and very original game... once the bugs are fixed, it's worth having. And it gives a lot of gameplay for a relatively small price. It's also one that's fun to come back to and play in small sessions... I would NOT try to do it all in one sitting, it's not that type of game at all.

Can any of the older gamers remember a title called Nebulus?

It was released in 1987,fez is very similar to this.
I used to be a parkeeper, then i took an arrow to the knee.

Thankfully I never encountered any problems with game saves (my cloud is disabled), but regarding the dashboarding...

FEZ dashboarded me maybe three or four times. Gotham City Impostors, on the other hand, has done it 30-40 times. I think the FEZ tech team has a lot less to be ashamed about, and the phrase "riddled with bugs" goes overboard in describing its few problems.
