Even the goalies can get in on the fights nowWhile some of you (particularly fans of the Bruins, Lightning, Sharks and Canucks) are still really enjoying your playoff hockey, the rest of us are already off watching baseball to fill in the time between hockey seasons. If you don't think that a summer of baseball action can sustain you, though, EA has provided some details and screens today of their upcoming hockey game,
NHL 12.
The Be a Pro mode has been revamped for the latest edition of the NHL franchise. As was the case in earlier titles, you get to experience the pursuit of hockey excellence throughout you own career. The better you play, the more your ice time increases, giving you more opportunitoes to join the legends in the NHL record books.
Unlike previous installments, the goalies you face will be dynamic. This means that you can skate right up to the net and make contact with the goalies, thus knocking them out of position, or knock the net off its moorings causing a stoppage in play. The fighting engine which first appeared in
NHL 10 returns in
NHL 12, but it adds goalie battles now. Yes, that means even your goalie can drop his glove and blocker and start throwing punches at rival players.
The game utilizes a Full Contact Physics Engine which allows for everything on the rink to be in play. Glass will shatter and helmets will fly as you attempt to knock players into the boards. The game will emphasize size and physicality, so be sure to use that to your advantage when battling in the corners or in front of the net for the puck.
NHL 12 will also be the first game in the series to feature outdoor play as it allows you and your team to participate in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The EA SPORTS Action Tracker, which "simulates action without missing a beat with a shift-by-shift breakdown of stats and key moments leading up to your next shift", will be another new feature in the title.
