I still can't even play the first Toy Soldiers game. I meet all the minimum requirements but whenever i start up the game it goes to a black screen for 10 seconds and then exits the game. Anyone know how to fix that?

there are more games here than already have achievements on the PC, not that i'm compaining, heres hoping they've finally sorted out the tracking issues with GFWL (and proved it to dev's so they are willing to at least try it)

They are getting rid of GFWL with Windows 8.

    Where have you seen that?

I can see them not using GFWL for Metro apps, but for the games that are based on the desktop (we all know companies aren't going to start making games Metro-only, they'll go down faster than you've ever seen) I'm pretty sure they'll still be using GFWL.

xPut Name Herex may have innocently fallen victim to a rumour. On April 17, 2012, Microsoft said that they continued to support the Games for Windows platform, to the rumors of the discontinuation of Games for Windows – LIVE in favor of Xbox Live on Windows.
I'll copy+paste the quote for ease:
Microsoft continues to support the Games for Windows platform, but we are making new investments in Metro style games. For the core PC gamer we launched “Age of Empires Online” last year and “Microsoft Flight” on February 29.
So with that in mind, I too am pretty sure they will keep using GFWL.

None of them seem good enough to warrant a purchase of Windows 8. Not until they fix the hosts file issue at least.
the hosts file protection is part of Windows Defender, you just turn it off to stop it editing the file.

If you are currently a student in the field of Information Technology and your educational institute signed on for MSDN AA, you can get Windows 8 for free... I am currently making good use of the full RTM.... at some point in the future you may see my development work on this list....

They will most likely require Windows 8. None of them seem good enough to warrant a purchase of Windows 8. Not until they fix the hosts file issue at least.
Not sure what you want to do with the Hosts file, but here is a quick excerpt from ghacks on fixing the issue (I haven't tried it myself):
"Tom just pointed out that turning off Windows Defender, which basically is Microsoft Security Essentials, in Windows 8 will resolve the issue. It appears that the program has been designed to protect some hosts from being added to the Windows hosts file. To turn off Windows Defender press the Windows key, type Windows Defender and hit enter. This launches the program. Switch to Settings here and select Administrator on the left. Locate Turn on Windows Defender and uncheck the preference and click save changes afterwards.

Please note that this turns off Windows Defender, and that it is recommended to have another antivirus program installed on the system to have it protected against Internet and local threats.

If you do not want to disable Windows Defender completely, you can alternatively add the hosts file to the list of excluded files and processes. You do that with a on Settings > Excluded files and locations. This basically blocks Windows Defender from scanning or manipulating the hosts file in the operating system."
Thanks, I never knew this was possible. I may upgrade to W8 after all.

If you were planning on getting Windows 8 just for achievements, you're doing it wrong. This is your computer's operating system, a device will probably be used significantly more for things other than gaming/entertainment (if I could hazard a guess).
    Sorry, crappy wording.

I wasn't going to get Windows 8 for achievements, I don't even go for achievements. I don't even own an Xbox 360, and only a few of my PC games are GFWL.

I'm just saying that this really isn't something that's going to finally push me over the edge to buy Windows 8.

Uhh, looks like I'll have to put Windows 8 on my PC at some point then. I just installed it on a virtual machine last night and didn't really care for it. I just hope that they eventually add party chat support. With the current GFWL setup, you can only private chat.
You will be able to install the entire system on a virtual machine if you want to. Obviously, you'd have to buy this one but if you don't want to replace Windows 7, you don't have to. Also, a lot of people seemed to over look the fact that Win8 had a desktop the same as all the previous Windows. I didn't play around in the settings but I heard the beta didn't let you switch to a default. But it is in there!
I'm aware of the desktop on Win8. I just don't know how well more graphic intense games will run in a virtual machine. I'll probably just mess around with it in a virtual machine until I finish the GFWL games I have installed on Win7. I'm definitely not trying to download and install all those again.
Well I was right about games running poorly in a VM at least on my PC. In the new https://www.trueachievements.com/Microsoft-Taptiles-xbo....htm game, it's almost impossible to get the 30 speed bonus achievement as the game becomes too laggy. I'm now currently installing Win8 to a second partition and am going to dual boot with 7.

I don't think the Preview versions can access the LIVE aspect of the games. If you have TechNet (or buy a Win8 PC from a manufacturer), you have access to Adrea, Taptiles, and Pinball FX2 / Minesweeper / Mahjong / Solitaire (all available at release)

To the games, but to the LIVE part with achievements? And I assume you actually mean the preview version, not the one available from things like TechNet (which are the full version)

Not necessarily. Solitaire (and possibly Mahjong / I assume Minesweeper) has been there since the first version of Windows 8, but never had the LIVE part available.

I am using the preview version and I completed 100% on Solitaire, Taptiles, Mahjong, and Minesweeper.

I can confirm that with the preview version ppl can have access to the games, to the achievements and to their Xbox Live account via Windows 8 PREVIEW.
