Welcome to the 360 Regional Compatibility Project!

The Goal

To catalog the compatibility of every regional variant of every retail game released for the Xbox 360.

Details

The Xbox 360 was released in three distinct versions, roughly based on geographical areas, but classified by the television standard used in those regions. The areas are known as:

NTSC - North America, Canada, Mexico, etc (aka NTSC-U)
PAL - Europe, Australia, New Zealand, etc
NTSC-J - Japan, South Korea, etc

Although they are classified by the television standard, there is actually no functional difference between the consoles - a PAL console can be used in the US without any convertors (besides power), for example.

However, there is one key difference between the consoles: region locking. Some publishers lock games from running on non-native consoles, and this makes it harder to import and play titles from other regions.

There have been various attempts to catalog the region locking of games, notably by Play Asia (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-00-3-xbox360_compatibility_gui...), although there are others (e.g. http://forum.xbox-sky.cc/xbox360_regional_compatibility_guid...).

What these have lacked is completeness. Many in the TA community have access to multiple consoles, and also have large game libraries. I am hopeful that with enough community support we might come close to cataloging every combination of game and console region.

The Project

It started as a side project between Crandy and myself, and we've asked several members of the community to help. The current work in progress can be seen here (a Google spreadsheet): http://goo.gl/jgXc8C

Would you like us to submit information here, so it can be seen and possibly confirmed or denied, or would you prefer PM?

If you're interested, I'd encourage you to just start adding to the spreadsheet directly! :)

Since I started this project I have developed some tools that will let me fetch the entire game list from TA. I can then create a sheet with this automatically fetched data, and we can populate from there.

I want to drop the Xbox Title ID field as it's not that useful. I was the only one who was able to access that data in any practical sense. I'd hoped that might be useful to distinguish different games, but it hasn't really worked out that way given the difficulty in finding this info for most people.

curious about that title id field. the title ids that i am familiar with are the folders on an xbox 360 formatted drive (where the saves, dlc, install, etc. for each game goes). they are always 8 digits and begin with a 4 or 5. (as you can see here: http://5.39.25.104/verified.php?f=name&q=bright+lights)

also i have my list updated and uploaded for anyone interested. every game is accounted for and has at least one region entry.

here is a list that shows every game available in any particular region combo. it's an easy way to find games that will work on your system.

One of the main reasons this feature was wanted was to find games that 'only' play on a certain system. For example; many people, like me, may be thinking of buying another region console, such as NTSC-J - I want to know what games are exclusive to that console, so I can get the achievements from them.

When you have games marked as RF, does that mean they will definitely play on every single type of console listed?

i have it there in the second list. at the bottom of the spreadsheet are tabs. if you click PAL, that is all PAL-only games.

EDIT: if it's marked RF in the green column there exists a disc that will play on any system. but make sure to check, cause some have a RF disc and a NTSC/U disc. so you don't want to get the wrong one.

some games have a PAL disc and a NTSC/U+J disc. or a NTSC/U disc and a PAL+J disc. for those games i added them to the tab of the second list that says ALL. that doesn't mean all those games are RF, just that all those games are playable in all 3 regions across 1 or more discs.

Example: in my spreadsheet, I have 1464993782 for Scene It! Bright Lights Big Screen (CA Ver), which is 0x575207F6, which is one that's missing from your db as it happens.

Edit: for your convenience, I've added a new column that converts the title ID to hex.

Is this project still on-going? seems like it could be very useful.

Yep, it's still alive! Mostly just by request at the moment, I've been busy with other things (like the podcast). If there's a title you want tested though, let me know.

Is there anywhere to submit results for this? I'm planning on going through my collection at some point (next few weeks most likely), so may as well share my results.

(I have a PAL and NTSC 360 Slim, and a non-Japanese 360 [No HDMI] FWIW)

Hi, and thanks for your interest!

If you are interested in contributing, generally you could either submit results to me via PM or I can give you write access to the spreadsheet.

That said, I've made it a bit of a rule that we only really accept complete submissions - in other words, tests across all three consoles. It's too much work trying to keep track of who tested which variant on which console, and I'd rath have complete results than go back and have the missing titles checked on the third console later. We've already got a backlog of partially tested titles, and I don't want to add to that if I can help it.

Once again though, really appreciate your interest in the project, and if you pick up a J console we'd happily take your test results.

Hi,

I'll forward you my results when done then smile. Just realised I could have been clearer - it's an NTSC-J console, but from outside Japan (IIRC Hong Kong). Compatibility is almost the same (only NTSC-J game I've tried that didn't work is Shin Sangoku Musou 4)

Interesting. Hong Kong is ... an odd region for the Xbox 360. I think it might even be PAL?

Reckon you could test a known NTSC-J only title in it to see? We'd need to be absolutely sure about the region before we can use it for results.

SSM4 is definitely NTSC/J - Japan only. the main ones to test would be Conan JP and DDR Universe 2, those are the only ones i've come across that include Japan but exclude another NTSC/J region.

the Quake 4 Bonus Disc (Quake 2) is the only NTSC/J disc i know that excludes Japan, so that's a good one to test that you have a non-Japan NTSC/J console, though it also works in all NTSC/U and PAL regions too.

everything else i've ever seen is normal.

I've played stuff listed as NTSC-J only in the current spreadsheet without issue (e.g. Clannad, code_18, Steins;Gate, Deathsmiles (JP Ver) and a bunch of other VNs). The only game I've tried that differs is SSM4 (gives a region error in all three of my consoles).

I'm not 100% certain the console is from Hong Kong, but that is what the seller claimed (IIRC, TV standard in HK is PAL, but Microsoft generalised the entire 'Asia' region as NTSC-J for 360 purposes)

I think I've got a copy of Conan JP, and a PAL version of the Quake 2 bonus disc. I'll give those a shot tomorrow and see what happens.
