Looking at the achievements for lego harry potter, what does it mean when an achievement ends in (single player only)? Does it honestly mean that you can't play with a friend because i find that pretty hard to believe.

It means that only one will get the achievement if you are playing co-op. That's at least how I interpeted it.
All work and no play makes Jos a dull boy.

i'd say albajos is right, unfortunate for people split screening with 2 accounts

I think it just gives it to the main person whose game it is not the guest. I think it is because most of them that say that are collection based achievements and they get recorded and saved in the game that the host player launched. The co-op guest doesn't have a separate data save.

player 2 will get the chapter one's if they play the years in one sitting. if they drop out or start and after player 1 they won't get them. they won't get the collection ones either.
