I think the popularity of roguelikes is due to newer games being just too easy. the original NES games were just way too hard, but by the end of the SNES era, you could just roll through most games on normal difficulty. With the advent of save anywhere, even the concept of redoing anything more than 1/3 of a level passed into history. Of course there are the exceptions, games intentionally hard, but also the technology of the genre has moved way up, so you can do much better games than the ones from the 90's like fatal labyrinth, which is painfully primitive compared to even the most stripped down indie title now.
