DOOM was not the first remake of the 1993 game but the second.
Gears 4 is a remake of Gears 3... oh wait, of Gears 2 perhaps? Of course it has THE SAME mechanics which was introduced back in 2006 with the original 'Gears' !
Doom (1993) and DOOM (2016) are completely different games.
I addressed the issue of originality with regards to
Gears of War 4 as well. To be more precise about
DOOM, executive producer Marty Stratton said the name had been changed from Doom 4 to DOOM because it was an origin game reimagining everything about the originals. That's why I referred to it as a reboot. If you want to refer to it as a reimagining, I have no objection to that term.
I agree with you that there is a lot of difference between the 1993 and 2016 games--id Software made expert use of the latest technology. However, beneath the 2016 technological polish, I still recognize the game I loved to play in 1993.
Don't get me wrong, I believe
DOOM is an exceptional game. There's nothing wrong with a reboot or reimagining of a game released over 20 years ago. DOOM certainly has the credentials to deserve a remake. I merely made an observation, that I believe is true, that a reboot is less likely to get the same accolades as the original.
The bottom line is IMHO
DOOM is an exceptional game but it is not a groundbreaker. DOOM (1993) was a groundbreaker that was featured on many PC and gaming magazine covers as the 1993 game of the year.
