Someone who paid real money to fully equip their character to the max gear score can still be utterly destroyed by a player with basic gear who understands the combat. I haven't spent a single penny on steel in this game and I can still hold my own even in unfair and outnumbered fights.
Personally I think learning how the characters should be used is more important than the combos. For example, the warden / warlord are exceptional in group fights, with excellent defense and utilising revenge mode to turn the tide even in a 1v3 situation, while the Orochi and peacekeeper for example are less useful in team fights but can annihilate anyone in 1v1 duels.
Overall the best thing I can say about this game is I rarely feel my deaths were cheap. Unlike CoD or battlefield, I hardly ever feel like my opponent won due to luck or surprise or a better weapon, but rather they outplayed me. Which means even when Im on a losing streak the game is still satisfying to play.
I'm not sure why people keep repeating the phrase pay to win, I have never played this game, but it seems that most of the benefits from paying would only be cosmetic from all I have heard/read. Most games only offer cosmetics or shortcuts for the paying public...and I am fine with that, as long as the game isn't imbalanced by microtransactions then I think they are okay.
I would say that although I am not a massive fan of CoD or Battlefield I would suggest that most times any of us are bested it is through the other player being better rather than the death being cheap. I understand what you are saying though, the style of this game removes the element of surprise to an extent...but I'm sure there is a skill to surprising people on the previously mentioned titles.
