not sure if Europeans care that it's backwards, or if anyone really "celebrates" Pi Day, but I just though of a cool challenge. it may be short notice for those who like to plan their gaming but I don't think it would matter.

my idea is, every year, all of TA works to see how many "pis we can smash". the goal would be to bring as many achievements that are ratio 3.14, down below 3.00 within one day (March 14).

that's pretty much it. I was thinking of something with 7 and 22 Gamerscore, but there are only 34 worth 7, and only four 22's...

You won’t be bringing any 3.14s down to under 3 in a day, unless it was a brand new release.

I mean that's kind of the idea, is it not? Acknowledging it wouldn't be easy and would likely take quite a few people, but I took that as the community idea - get enough people together to make an impact on ratios - assuming it could be made to recalculate fast enough.

I don't think that would be very likely at all, unless everybody went for one or 2 specific achievements, it would be too spread out to make a difference.

Maybe a better idea for the contest would be to see who can unlock a 3.14 ratio achievement exactly or who can get closest?

There are 174 achievements with a ratio of 3.14 across all games. (truncated, including discontinued/pdu)

Take this achievement, for example:
FIFA 13Trolling for GoalsThe Trolling for Goals achievement in FIFA 13 worth 47 pointsScore on a free kick after running over the ball

62,447 gamers with FIFA 13
6,290 gamers with the achievement in question

Formula for TA Ratio is:
(total/unlocked)^0.5

Since ratios on TA are now truncated ever since Leap Frog 2.0, that means the ratio really only needs to get to 2.9999999999999 ad infinitum in order to be considered 2.99, and since 2.9999999999... is pretty much 3.0, we'll just use 3 to keep the math simple.

Since 3^2=9, the number of gamers with the game needs to be less than 9x the number of people who earned the achievement, so 62,447/9=6938.55555... which means that, assuming nobody new starts the game, 649 people would need to unlock the achievement in order for the ratio to drop below 3.0. Considering on average only around 3000 people participate in each of TA's community challenge's, and some of them will only barely participate (or won't participate at all!), some of those people will have already earned the achievement, some of them won't want to earn the achievement, or simply don't have the skill, time, or means to earn it, and most of them probably won't even own the game, anyway. It's not really feasible for that many gamers to unlock a specific achievement in one day.

Since it is a ratio, this holds true with all games. The number of gamers required to lower the ratio that much will severely outweigh the number of registrants for the challenge who are able to unlock the achievement. A better challenge would be to simply just knock it off of 3.14, even down to 3.13. Or you could just say "Unlock as many achievements as you can with a 3.14 ratio" and that effect will happen naturally.

I could see this idea working out, though, with a few things adjusted. It's probably a little late for this year, but maybe we could have something for next year?

I was going to say that it, of course, depends highly on which games you choose.

Also I took it to mean the community would all get one achievement assigned at a time, until that achievement was dropped below 3.0 and therefore the effort would be a focused one.

Of course something like FIFA, any gwg and such, or other popular games is going to be much more difficult to budge than say:

Unit 4SPACE RECRUITThe SPACE RECRUIT achievement in Unit 4 worth 18 pointsComplete a game of Space Brawl.

SparewareAndroidThe Android achievement in Spareware worth 92 pointsReach level 32

Toro¡Qué arte tienes! The ¡Qué arte tienes! achievement in Toro worth 77 pointsUnlock all the concepts

Pier Solar and the Great ArchitectsSecret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in Pier Solar and the Great Architects worth 47 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement

any of those, which are both in I believe increasing order of length of time and number of players.

Popularity wouldn't be the only factor of course, but also the length of time to reach the achievement as noted.

EDIT: That could be how the order of the single assigned achievement could be chosen, from easiest to budge to hardest to budge effectively increasing the number of people required to participate.

And yes, I agree, it could certainly be adjust to just knock it from 3.14 or to 3.10 or something.

Yeah I guess the math of using 3.0 isn't realistic. I figured the specifics could be worked out, I guess if it's 3.13 that's good enough since it's no longer pi or the date of the event.

Just trying to earn lots of 3.14s was my first thought, then I realized they would potentially not stay 3.14, so why not make that part of the goal.

It's going to be my personal challenge to look at pi ratio achievements that day, and anyone else is welcome to join in. Maybe we'll come up with some cool ideas.

I know it's not really relevant to this discussion, but I wanted to be that guy and point out that 2.9999999999... is actually exactly equal to 3.0.

But is 0.0000000000...0000001 really nothing?

smile That number doesn't exist. If a decimal repeats infinitely, it doesn't make sense for it to have an end.

I mean I celebrate pi day but that’s because it’s also my birthday laugh
Could be a fun community challenge but it’s probably too late to put it together.

I guess you could also do a ratio challenge based around the digits of pi, where you have to unlock a 3 then a 1 then a 4 ratio achievement and so on.
Then see who can earn the most digits of pi.
Could get pretty crazy when you hit a few 7's, 8's and 9's.

I was thinking we could allow anything that fit the string, but using GS. so you could earn a 31, 41, 5, 9, 26... but there are probably lots of combinations that would lead people into dead ends. even assuming they could just access any game at any time. maybe using truescore would be easier to find the digits.

so i found an easy 3.14 ratio and amazingly after I earned it, I noticed my last achievements were also on this day two years prior. totally by coincidence.

QuickMythril's achievements in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

anything else was pretty time consuming to get done in a day, so it seems like that's something to consider. we'd have to pick targets in advance to work towards to have the right one unlock on the right day.
