2. Story walkthrough
Here's generally how the game works. You complete levels and earn a star based on how fast you do it. You can earn a maximum of three stars. As you earn more stars, new levels will unlock. You will complete the main game once you've earned 120 stars, which is an average of two stars on each of the game's 60 base levels. After that, you will unlock the legacy levels, which are all the levels from the original PC exclusive game (10SNX is actually a sequel). Earning three stars on every level will bring you up to 300, at which point you will unlock all the marathon modes.
So this walkthrough will take you through showing you how to beat each of the levels using a video. These levels are extremely short, so I'm not going to give you a step by step walkthrough. It would be a waste of my time and yours. Instead, just click on the videos if you get stuck and want to see my route through the level. After we've discussed all the levels, I will go over the miscellaneous achievements and collectibles, which should take no time at all for you to wrap up.
Table of Contents
- Story Levels
- Marathon Mode
Before we go through these, I want to give you a quick overview on how to beat a level. Each level gives you a maximum of ten seconds. If you want three stars, you'll obviously need to be much faster than that. There are usually multiple paths through a level, but only one that is quick enough to get three stars most of the time. You can learn that path in three ways:
- Trial and error. You may take this route if you like puzzle solving.
- Use an in-game hint.
- My videos in this walkthrough (which sometimes use different paths I found to be more consistent than the ones in the hints).
Hints? You press and hold to use one in a level. They are limited in supply, but you can earn more infinitely by playing a "ball and cup" minigame in the arcade. It's pretty simple and you can try as many times as you want if you fail. To play it, simply go in the arcade and talk to the girl there. You gain access to the arcade after you get 20 stars (you will see it).
So, with that said, here are the videos:
Once you have 120 stars, you will unlock the legacy levels. There are five worlds here with 8 levels each instead of 10. Here are the videos:
Legacy World One
Legacy World Two
Legacy World Three
Legacy World Four
Legacy World Five
As you progress through these levels, you'll get a number of them for progressing the game's story. You progress the game's story simply by earning stars. You can always replay a level to earn more stars whenever you want. You get the following achievements simply by playing the game, earning stars, and progressing the story:
At 25 Stars -
Unlocked by 2,367 tracked gamers (77% - TA Ratio = 1.13)
At 40 Stars -
Unlocked by 1,802 tracked gamers (59% - TA Ratio = 1.30)
At 75 Stars -
Unlocked by 1,138 tracked gamers (37% - TA Ratio = 1.64)
And finally, at 120 Stars, you will complete the game's story -
Unlocked by 913 tracked gamers (30% - TA Ratio = 1.83)
After that, you'll still need to keep playing to earn stars and unlock every level and the marathon modes. You'll need 300 stars to unlock everything you need to complete the game's achievements, and you'll earn one of those achievements along the way when you get 150 stars:
Unlocked by 780 tracked gamers (25% - TA Ratio = 1.98)
Marathon Mode is definitely the hardest challenge in the game. If you've been watching the videos above, they were all recorded in Marathon Mode. This mode tasks you with completing every level in a world in a row (10 levels for the base game, 8 levels for the legacy worlds). If you want to get all the achievements, you'll need to do the following all at once:
- Complete all levels earning 3 stars on each;
- Without dying; and
- Without restarting.
Doing this will earn you an X rank. This sounds extremely hard, and at first it is, but once you learn how to do it, it speeds up. My first Marathon Mode took me two hours to X rank. After that it was less than one hour for each one, some of them even being less than 15 minutes. You will get good at this game, don't worry. The only advice I can really give is to watch my videos to learn the path and then practice it. Practice makes perfect. You'll find you quickly get a lot better here. What once seemed impossible is actually quite doable.
As a reminder, you must get 300 stars in order to unlock the legacy Marathon Modes. You do not need to complete the base game's marathon modes in order to unlock the legacy ones.
As you attempt to get these, there's realistically no way you won't unlock the following achievement at least a hundred times over:
Unlocked by 2,347 tracked gamers (76% - TA Ratio = 1.14)
Simply finishing every Marathon Mode no matter your rating gets you:
Unlocked by 152 tracked gamers (5% - TA Ratio = 4.49)
Getting an X rank on all eleven Marathon Modes will net you the hardest achievement in the game:
Unlocked by 71 tracked gamers (2% - TA Ratio = 6.55)
There are a few achievements related to collectibles in the game. One for finding all nine and one for getting a good score in the minigame the collectibles unlock.
The collectibles are easy. You can start and find most as soon as you get 20 stars, but you won't be able to get them all until you have earned 120 stars and finished the story mode, so you may as well wait until that point to start. The collectibles are pieces of the disc which goes into the game console in the arcade. There girl in the arcade will introduce you to them as soon as you walk into the arcade for the first time. You can see the locations in the video below. A text description is below that:
1. Right behind the girl in the arcade, in the upper right corner.
2. Just outside of the arcade, climb up the tall pole to the lookout spot - it's in the air between two of them.
3. Go to the generator room (to the right of the arcade, with Benji inside) and jump up and over the generator to enter a secret area on the right side.
4. Go to the Lobby, then go all the way to the left to get to the costume area. Continue left and jump into a slightly discolored area along the far left wall.
5. Go to the Lobby and jump onto the chandaliers, then move across them to the far upper left and jump into a discolored area.
6. Jump onto the top right level of the main area and go right behind the curtain. You'll need to do some platforming.
7. Jump onto the middle level of the main area and go left behind the curtain.
8. Once you unlock the engine room at 120 Stars, enter and jump over and behind the engine.
9. Once you beat the game (by entering the engine room for the first time), head to the far right of the ship (past the generator room) and jump off. You'll be in the tutorial area. Backtrack and you will get it in the final area where your house is. Enter your house to return to the ship.
As part of getting that ninth disc piece, you'll unlock an achievement when you jump off the ship:
Unlocked by 2,091 tracked gamers (68% - TA Ratio = 1.21)
Once you find all the pieces of the disc, simply go the arcade and press at the game console to start the minigame and unlock the achievement for getting all the collectibles.
Unlocked by 834 tracked gamers (27% - TA Ratio = 1.91)
Once you've unlocked the minigame, there's also an achievement for scoring 15,000 points in it. The minigame is simple, run around killing enemies and collecting gems to score points. Once you have five gems, you can use a super ability to wipe out all enemies on the screen. Use this as a last resort. If you pick up gems when you have a special already ready, you get 500 points instead and that's how you quickly get enough points.
The secret to the minigame is controlling the air. Make sure you're constantly using your uppercut to launch into the air and kill enemies that fly. Then when you begin to fall, ground pound. The second you hit the ground, start attacking in a direction and you should pretty much always be safe. You can kill the armored ground enemies by ground pounding them from the air. While it is possible to dash attack in the air, I recommend you do not do this. I died practically every time I tried it.
Unlocked by 378 tracked gamers (12% - TA Ratio = 2.84)
You earn costumes by doing various things such as earning stars and generally completing the game. The first costume is unlocked when you finish the story after earning 120 stars. You can then immediately get the costume achievement by going to the far left area of the ship and simply pressing in front of a costume you've unlocked.
Unlocked by 911 tracked gamers (30% - TA Ratio = 1.83)
And that's it! I hope this mini-walkthrough helped you. If you have any questions, just let me know!
