Batman: Arkham Asylum (Xbox 360) Walkthrough

3. Story walkthrough

Welcome to the Batman: Arkham Asylum Walkthrough.

Open your game case, take out your game, put it inside your Xbox 360, press play and let's get cracking!

Start the game on Hard to avoid three playthroughs. The game isn't that difficult on this difficulty, so it shouldn't prove much of a challenge.

After watching the stunning intro, you'll have a fight with a few enemies, so follow the on-screen instructions to unleash your fists and if you're lucky enough to build up a 5 move combo, you'll get your first achievement. Just remember to hit the cn_Y counter to keep your streak alive. If you're playing on hard, you will not get the visual cue, but the enemies overly telegraph the fact that they're going to attack. Just keep an eye out for someone about to throw their fist and you're good to go.

You're then going to follow down a winding maze of corridors. To reach these corridors, you will need to rip the vent grate off of the wall, it should be at knee level along one of the walls. Ignore the Riddler trophy in one of the cells for now, and enter the grate. Get used to this mechanic, as we'll be using the vents quite often. Luckily, the Joker has painted the floor with green arrows in the direction that he wants you to go. How thoughtful. You're going to come across chattering little teeth on the ground that you can destroy with your batarangs. I recommend holding off on that, as they're easier to collect in the mop-up stage as they can be annoying to keep track of. You may also find some large discs that glow that play an audio recording from whichever character they are assigned too. Again, I recommend holding off on those.

Working your way down the corridor (beating up a few thugs as you go), you will come to a few guards that refuse to enter a large medical room. They'll claim that Victor Zsasz has his hands on one of the guards, and will kill him if he sees anybody attempting a rescue, including a large Bat shaped man. Rule out the head-on assault, and pivot over to stealth. You'll be able to run up a nearby set of stairs and Batman will analyze the decorative stone gargoyles that ring the room from a ceiling height. He will see that they are sturdy enough to support your weight, and you will use your grapnel hook to latch onto the gargoyle. Another mechanic to remember, virtually every stealth portion of the game (Predator encounters) will deal with these gargoyles. Swinging between them will break line of sight if you are ever caught by the gun-toting guards, and will allow you to invisibly position yourself if the room is not alerted. Just like now. You will be able to swing from gargoyle to gargoyle until you are positioned behind Victor. The game will encourage you to hit him with a dive kick ( just holding down the cn_X button while the blue bat logo is over your target's head), which will knock him off his feet. Then, hit the ground takedown ( cn_RT and cn_Y ) to knock him out cold, saving the guard's life, and putting away your first super-villain! Good job Batman!

As you leave the room with Zsasz via vent (they keep thinking that locking you into a room is a great deterrent. They are wrong.), you will now come across a single guard locked out of a bio-hazard room with a giant window. He will watch as his fellow guards and medical personnel are suffocating to death on some kind of Joker toxin, and implores you to get in there to save them. Grapnel up and over the wall so that you're now situated on a large grate. Directly in front of you should be a guard that is hanging off the side, probably towards his permanent resting place. Dash over there and lift him out of the gas. A second guard will begin begging for his life, and will force you to leap from section to section to get over to him. Miss a leap, and you die.

When you arrive at the Medic Centre, you'll have to save three doctors. It seems that all people want you to do is save them! It's not like you're a superhero or anything...

For the first doctor, don't let the inmates see you. Just put some explosive gel on the 2 parts of the wall where the inmates are, then after both are placed, blow them up.

For the second doctor, kill all the inmates after the cutscene.

For the third doctor, kill the two inmates. Then grapple up to the vent and go through it. When you come into the room with the Joker's gas, just activate all the vents. After this, you'll get a reward:

Next on the list is one of the many awesome Scarecrow encounters. You'll have play detective in the morgue and poke around the dead bodies, but... OH JESUS! Scared you? No? Hmph... Anyway, navigate through the place, ducking and hiding from Scarecrow until you get to the end to get this:

Daydreamer

Furthur on in the game you will have to save Commissioner Gordon from Harley Quinn. After this you'll encounter a boss battle with a titan known as Bane.

BOSS BATTLE: BANE

Fighting Bane is similar to fighting the Venom Henchman earlier in the game, except he isn't as stupid. He throws debris and is faster. When Bane starts to charge you, throw a Batarang (LT) at his face and then dodge (double tap A) out of his way. Make sure when he hits the wall, he turns around and starts to rub his eyes. As long as he does this, run in and knock him around a little.
After you hit him enough times to tear one of his three hoses, rinse and repeat until you have achieved the desired effect.

Baneful Payback

The next achievement can be earned when you battle a bunch of henchmen while Harley tries to fry your bat brain. Makes sure you're on a different platform when the floor starts glowing to avoid getting hurt. Then apprehend Harley and lock her up to get:

Continuing on, you'll eventually come to a cutscene where the Joker sets two titan henchmen on you. You being Batman, aren't fazed by this, so set to work to take them both out (Batarang to the face and all that, you can also ride their back and get them to attack each other) to get:

Yet another storyline achievement: you get this after your third encounter with Scarecrow. Did you turn your console off at the game crash scene? You didn't? Don't lie to me!

Resist The Fear

Conquer the effects of the Scarecrow's fear gas

BOSS BATTLE (KINDA): KILLER CROC

Now, when you come face to face with the game's biggest foe, or what seems like it, he is actually the easiest to beat. After crawling across the slats on the floor, collecting all the spores and occasionally flinging a Batarang at Killer Croc to shut him up, you'll have to escape his hideout by planting explosive gel on the floor and detonating it when the time is right. Bing, another achievement in the bank.

Crocodile Tears

Venture into Killer Croc's lair and come out alive

When you start investigating plants in the greenhouse, you'll come across one that bites back. Poison Ivy.

BOSS BATTLE : POISON IVY

This boss battle is split into two.

PART 1
The first part consists of about 3 sets of vines rising out of the ground, followed by Ivy firing spore balls at your position. When Ivy's vines are attacking, watch for where the grass lines appear. You can dodge her attack (douple tap A) and while the vines are up, use your Batarang (LT) to hurt her (you bully!).

When Poison Ivy fires the spores, keep dodging. Run as she fires the first (hold A), then as she fires the second, use the Batarang to hit her opened shell, followed by a dodge (double tap A) to avoid getting hurt.

PART 2
Once she has lost her health the first time and you have planted the explosives, you will have to attack her again. At this point, thugs will attack you at the same time as the vines. Just do your thang. Should you find yourself safe from the vines but with a couple of thugs, it is better to focus on eliminating the thugs and saving your health than hitting Ivy. Also, if you are waiting for a vine attack, deal with the thugs. If nothing is happening, Batarang Ivy. The fight will be over soon enough.

When you get towards the end of the game, you will be invited to a party. Go towards the fireworks, and outside should be a couple of thugs with clipboards. Beat them up, then go through the door and wipe out the remaining thugs (this can be quite tricky on hard, so make use of your gadgets). God, you really are a:

BOSS BATTLE: JOKER

This is it, the big one, the finale. He's nothing like any other Titan creature you've faced. He's a bit more dangerous, but he's actually really easy to beat. At the beginning, he'll swing at you. Simply circle around him to avoid getting hit. After that, Joker jumps up to the high ledge and sends his lackeys after you. Just use your gadgets and you shall prevail.

After this, turn to Joker. He'll have his back turned to you (how rude!). Use your Ultra Batclaw and aim it at him. You can hook on to him and pull him down. Do so and he'll stick in the floor. Now pound his meat *ahem*. Repeat this twice more.

Just watch out for special thugs; jump round them and take them out one by one to avoid losing too much health. After that, pull Joker down again and attack. Once you've beaten the last lot of the thugs, use the Ultra Batclaw on Joker one more time. This will end the fight. Watch the scene that plays. That'll do donkey. That'll do.
