3. Story walkthrough
We will start the game on Legend right away since we will keep the Thane difficulty for the second playthrough to have an easier time on it. Playing on this difficulty isn't that tough, but be warned that there are some parts which can get annoying. Basically we will try to get all the collectibles and battle-related achievements (blocks, disarms, dodges, etc.) in this playthrough. Don't worry, I will mention where to do what, and luckily the achievements are cumulative over one playthrough (although reloading a checkpoint won't work for this). Also, make sure to break objects whenever you can for another achievement and activate your hero ability as much as you can in order to maximize your rune output.
So with that preparation in mind, let us start the game!
ACT 1 - Grendel and the Golden Horn
PROLOGUE - Breccas Challenge
After the cutscene, follow your opponent on the parcour. Once you reach the crabs, this is a good chance to rack up some barehanded kills and I strongly recommend you grind them with crabs when and wherever you see them since you need a total of 58 kills. After another cutscene you will have to face the sea serpent. Get killed the first time and after another cutscene you'll have the power to kill it. Simply dodge his attacks, attack when his head is on the island and follow the button prompts to kill it! Do so to unlock the following achievement:

EPISODE 1 - A Demons Tempest
After the cutscene on the ship, hit the correct button prompts to continue (practice this so you don't have any problems later on in the game). This is simple, so no need for any further explanation.
Episode 2 - The Kings Road
We will concentrate on using the heroic abilities as much as we can, but bear in mind that we will focus on the Carnal ability during this playthrough since it will aid us in fighting bosses later on. Concentrate now on killing as many crabs as you can, barehanded, and keep killing enemies in your path until you unlock the following. Using the Carnal skill (hold RT) makes this easier since you deal more damage and are invincible.
Now reload the level and use Carnal Rage as soon as you get in contact with enemies. This time we'll focus on killing 8 enemies within one Rage; you can use the sword on the weapon pile at the beginning for this. This will unlock the following (this might be the case that you got this on your barehanded run!)
Again, reload the save and this time play the level for real. Pick up the sword from the pile and rack your first kill with this weapon if you didn't use it before (1/8). Whenever I count a weapon, make sure to get at least 1 kill with it for an achievement. Continue along the beach, encounter the king's messenger and keep killing enemies as they appear. Make sure to get as many multi-kills as you can, especially on the crabs. After that sequence you should have enough power for a Hero Storm (a full power meter). Get past the huge stone blocking your path (send your men with LB and the right sign, boost them with a song) and use the Hero Storm on the next larger enemy group. This should net you the achievement for killing 8 enemies in one Hero Storm.
Here is also a video on it, credit goes to adiash73.
Keep going and you will find some new enemies, this time carrying weapons. Use Carnal Rage, grab them and disarm them (grab with B, disarm with A. Rage will speed that process up and makes you invincible). Keep disarming enemies and kill one with the now stolen Axe (2/8). Some of them will also have curved swords which you will need to get a kill with (3/8). Steal weapons whenever you can in order to get a related achievement; you need a total of 28 stolen weapons. You will come to a weapons stash with a 2 bladed Axe, so make sure to get a kill with it (4/8). Now keep going until you finish the level.
Interlude - Herot in upheaval
This level solely consists of a lengthy cutscene which can be skipped, of course.
Episode 3 - Grendel and the golden horn
You now will need to sing a song to lure Grendel to you. You need to hit every note of this song in order to get an achievement. If you fail, simply reload the last checkpoint since this will take a few attempts. As soon as you succeed you will unlock the following:
Here is a video, credit goes to adiash73
After that he will kill all your warriors and you will need to kill him alone. This is a good chance to get some achievements, but you can also get them in the next few chapters easily. I mean in general, the 88 dodges and 58 blocks, which are rather simple since there is a near endless supply of weapons on the nearby racks, you can easily dodge all attacks that he launches against you (use LT on him and press A with a direction, enter the slow motion sequence and you know you did it right). However, this would take a lot of time so I'd recommend killing him off and continuing your path (make sure to get at least a few of those though). So, follow this simple pattern: attack him until he retreats to the middle, use rage to rip out a side pillar and hit him with it until he goes down. Grab and attack him with the right buttons and rinse and repeat until you tear his arm off and beat him. This will unlock the following:
Here is a good video, credit goes to adiash73Interlude - Even Monsters have a Mother
Talk to everyone in order to finish this level, no real descriptions required.
Episode 4 - Temptation of a Mother
During your battles here concentrate on blocking incoming attacks (hold LT) and wait until the following achievement unlocks. Your weapon and shield will break during this, so make sure to always get a new one by either stealing or grabbing one.
Reload the level and use rage to disarm every enemy you come across. If you were thorough until now you will unlock this before you reach the end of this level since there are plenty of enemies around here and you only need a total of 28 disarms.
Reload the level once more and now get the 88 dodges. I recommend getting to the part where the statue is standing on the higher ledge. This will lure your men away and you have all the enemies attacking you alone, speeding up the process of dodging. This will unlock the following after some time:
These achievements can all be gotten during your playthrough, but if you get them out of the way early you can concentrate on other things.
Reload once more, but this time we'll play the level for real. Use your Carnal Rage to aid you in getting multikills. Use the X, X, Y attack pattern to deal the most damage. Use your men to open the gate ahead and follow the path. Upon reaching the shining statue you will find a weapon heap containing a huge bone which you can use as a weapon. Use it to get another needed weapon kill (5/8). Continue on your path until you reach Grendel's dead body lying on a pedestal. Here you find one of the legendary weapons you need to collect for another achievement. Follow the winding path down and as soon as you hit a dead end, you'll can see a shining sword on a ledge underneath you. Climb there to claim your first legendary weapon (1/4). Now simply follow the path, encounter the Mother of Monsters and fend off her attacking clones. After some time you'll lose the battle and after this happens, the act will come to an end and you'll earn the following two achievements:ACT 2 - Inner Beast
´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´Episode 5 - Innocence Sacrificed
After some talking in the stronghold (here you'll find out that there are 2 people that let you upgrade your skills) you can leave and head out for the mission. Make sure to pick up the spear so you get a weapon which you need a kill with (6/8). Make sure to use Carnal Rage whenever you can since this will earn you some points at the end of the mission and is needed for an achievement.
As soon as you start, slide down and head to the right to pick up your first runes (1 & 2/30). From here, head to the left, up a ramp lit with torches and climb up the ledges at the end of this ramp to find another rune (3/30). Now head to the middle of the swamp and destroy the rubble to free a Thane prisoner (1/5). Get to the huge stone and drop down to the left for a rune in the water (4/30) and to the right for a rune behind a breakable boat (5/30). In the next area, grab the rune to your right in the water (6/30) and to your very left behind a breakable pillar is another rune (7/30). Now head up the ramp to the right, travel all the way to the glowing gate and get the pitchfork from the weapon rack and earn a kill with it (7/8). Now concentrate on killing all the followers and using rage as much as you can (without killing your men if possible). A troll will appear but he is rather easy with your Carnal Rage, so beat him with it. This will also end the chapter and as long as you used rage a lot you should get a lot of rage runes at the score table. Let your men open the door for you, and to your left after the gate, is a rune (8/30). Wade through the water and kill the trolls that try to steal the maidens. After you've done that, make sure to kill the Priestesses that are attacking with some support troops. Their special ability allows them to cast a spell on your troops which will lure them to them and make them vulnerable for attacks. As soon as you get close to them, they'll stop immediately, so try to get close whenever you can. Grabbing and killing them with Y is the fastest possible way to get rid of them (not to mention the Carnal Rage boost). As soon as they are down, you will finish this episode.
Episode 6 - Beyond the Barrow
From your starting position, head left to find a rune on a pier (9/30). With the pier behind you, follow the left side until you find a rotten boat with a rune on a piece of land nearby (10/30). Turn around, go straight ahead and follow the line of tents until you find a rune in between some tents (11/30). Now get back to where you found the rune near the rotten boat to find a pillar there. You can take it as a weapon in rage mode and if you press B while carrying it you will drop it. This pillar spawns infinitely so you can pick it up and smash it forever. These smashed pillars count towards your 58 smashed objects so you can grind all of them here. This however takes some time and if you smash every breakable item over the course of the campaign you will get the achievement. However, this is the perfect grinding spot so I've added the achievement here:
Head straight and slightly to the west to get inside the water. Here to your left is the next rune (12/30). Open up the gate and go straight ahead on the small piece of land to find another rune (13/30). Go straight and keep to the right, climb up the cliff and open up the gate here. Inside you will find a Thane prisoner (2/5), a legendary shield on a nearby weapons rack (2/4) and two runes on the ground (14 & 15/30). Back outside, follow the path to the left to find a rune (16/30) and keep following that path to find another one to the left, behind a pillar (17/30). Go through the next door and head for the area where you fought the troll, and activate the rune in front of the door (only touching it is sufficient). There are 2 more in this area: one is right at the end of the wooden walkway and the second one is when you turn around. Head to the right, sticking to this side until you find it hidden in a small corridor. Go through the now open door and after the small cutscene, drop down where the troll took the maiden. Head immediately to the left and smash the pillar here. Inside you will find a collarbone which you need to pick up. Get a kill with it to get your last weapon done (8/8). The following will unlock:
Now die and this time, pick a good set of equipment from the wooden pile with the red flag, before you slide down (I recommend the legendary sword and shield); don't forget to upgrade your Carnal skills. Here is also a great spot to grind disarms, blocks, dodges, etc. if you haven't got them until now.
As soon as you get down, head either left or right to block off the door. There is a second one on the opposite side, so block it off as soon possible as there are only 1-2 enemies left. Use Carnal as much as you can to get runes at the end of the episode. As soon as you close the second door, there will be a few waves of enemies and after some time, a troll will appear. Kill him (he is a little bit tougher than the previous one) with your Carnal Rage and you'll finish the episode as soon as you get through the door.
Episode 7 - Ritual Temptation
A cutscene will start, and when it's finished follow the path until you see another one. Concentrate on killing the trolls whenever they grab a Maiden since they don't come infinitely. Keep an eye out for Warriors in peril and after you've killed the last troll, concentrate on killing the Priestess. A few enemies will spawn as well, but they shouldn't be a big deal as long as you kill some while going for the trolls. After a cutscene you will need to fight the Mother again. Use Carnal Rage as often as you can and fend off the grab attacks. After some time you will lose the battle, but you'll need to stay for less than 2 minutes to get a bonus of 7 carnal runes. After the cutscene you will also finish the episode.
Episode 8 - Meet the Shadows
Get to the blood pool and continue climbing up until you find yourself in an area where some Shadow Warriors will attack you. These enemies can only be harmed by using Carnal Rage, so make use of it. Careful to not break your weapon too soon and grab-smash attacks will kill them immediately. This is a rather tough fight so stop your rage on your own when you've killed the last of the group. Make use of the Rage Spores scattered in the area. As soon as they are down, climb up, reunite with your men, close the door right next to you and continue killing enemies until another troll appears. Kill him and the remaining enemies to finish this episode.
Episode 9 - In a Wolf's Skin
Go through the now open door and follow the path until you face the wolf the first time. Your Carnal Rage will aid you tremendously so concentrate solely on him. As soon as his health drops, grab him with B and win the quicktime event. He will open up the closed door for you and you'll need to follow him to the next area. In here you'll find some stone pillars scattered around. Use Carnal Rage, grab one and kill incoming enemy troops with it. Get a total of 8 kills to get the following achievement:
Here is a perfect spot to grind out the 28 multi kills. Simply use rage or the pillar to do it if you didn't get it already.
Kill multiple enemies with a single attack on 28 different occasions
Either die or finish the wolf off now. Grabbing pillars will help you tremendously in killing the wolf since the damage output is insane. As soon as you grab him for the last time, make sure your rage is activated. After he is down you will get 7 bonus runes for using rage and the following achievement will unlock:
Here is a great video on this boss fight, credit goes to adiash73Interlude - No Time for Feasting
After a rather lengthy cutscene, get some more Carnal upgrades by talking to Ulferth. Get back to the balcony afterwards, grab your best gear and head out for the next mission.
Episode 10 - Treacherous Falls
Go through the barrier, lower the bridge ahead and after crossing it, take a right as soon as you can. Climb up the wall to free a Thane prisoner (3/5) and continue down the path. As soon as the leader of the enemy appears, climb up to where he is standing and he will run away. Open up the door, run straight forward and climb up the wall near the huge boulder; here you will have the chance to kill the leader. As soon as he is down, you can replenish your troops and loosen the rock. Lower the bridge and near the fences to the right you'll find the next rune (18/30). Move along and as soon as you see the next boulder, climb up to the right. Go straight and near the weapon rack is another rune (19/30). Fight off the incoming enemies and kill the troll to stop the enemies spawning. Get back up to the rack and instead off dropping down to the boulder, climb up the wall to the right. Shimmy along the edge, drop down and shimmy further to find a prisoner (4/5) and a rune (20/30). Head for the now open door and before you reach it, to your right near a torch, is another rune (21/30). Go through the door to finish the episode.
Episode 11 - Retaliation
Slide down 2 ledges and head to the right after the second one. Climb up the wall there, going all the way to the top to find a legendary spear (3/4). Follow the path and after a cutscene, you'll need to open the door. Drop down to the left and climb the palisades to kill the spear throwers. Now order your troops to open the door and mop up the remaining enemies. Go through the newly opened door and kill the leader in this area. You need to climb up to lure him down and kill him off on the beach to finish this area. Do the same thing in the following areas until you reach another door your men need to open. Here you will need to defend a relic by fending off the incoming enemies. This is a really tough battle, so be prepared!
As soon as you get inside, send your men to the right to block off the entrance. Go up the slope and stand before the ramp leading up to the relic. Your Carnal Rage is here, a 2 sided sword. On the one hand you can kill enemies in a few blows and smash shields as if they are paper, on the other hand you can harm the relic and destroy it in a mere 2-4 hits. The recipe to win this is to concentrate solely on the enemies going for the ramp while ignoring the rest. Make sure to not kill your own enemies and as soon as the Ogres show up, intercept them at the beach. This is an insanely tough battle but after you've killed the wave after the trolls, you'll finally finish the episode. Here I unlocked my maximum carnal index achievement:Episode 12 - North Seas
After the cutscene, with your back to the relic, head to the left corner near the boulder for a rune (22/30). Turn around; head directly left to find another rune at the end of a small path (23/30). Lower the bridge with your men, but before entering it, head to the left to find a rune (24/30). Follow the path and as soon as you reach a waterfall/torch/cliff area, drop down the ledge and straight ahead of you is another rune (25/30). Get back up and climb up the wall to your right. Follow that path to find 2 runes in a secluded area (26 & 27/30). Open up the next door and go through it. Head all the way back to the area where you left the huge boulder and head down to find a closed off door. Open it up to find a Thane prisoner (5/5) and a rune (28/30). This will unlock 2 achievements:
Go back where you came from and drop down to the left after the door. Shimmy along that ledge and climb all the way up the stone pillar to find a legendary Axe (4/4) which will unlock the following:
Here you will also find a rune (29/30). Get back and open up the door to your right while moving down the path. Behind it you'll find 2 more runes. One is a bonus rune, but the other one will net you the following achievement (30/30):
Follow the path down, there is another rune to your right where you'll get a cutscene upon reaching the pier. Cheer your men on to follow Brecca, and after another cutscene you'll land on the shores. Climb straight up and face Brecca in a melee fight. Make sure to use Carnal Rage as often as you can. You need to be quick since your men will die on the beach like flies, but since you now have the axe, there shouldn't be a lot of trouble with that fight. If your axe should break, grab-smash him until he is down. Another reward of 7 runes awaits you and the episode will end.
Episode 13 - Hel Ride
Head straight forward and destroy the ice pillar shown in the cutscene. After another cutscene, navigate through the ice and destroy some more ice pillars. On the way to the second one you'll find a strong hammer in an area behind a breakable wall to the left. This area is rather tough since you need to be fast to reach the pillars in time. Make sure to swing correctly to reach the handholds (this is done by swinging twice before pressing B). Get to the end of this section and face off against the Mother of Demons (again, try to stay under 2 mins) to get more runes and finish the episode.
Episode 14 - Two Kings in Hel
Make sure to equip good weapons for this (shadow weapons are best) and upgrade your Carnal powers. If you were thorough until now, you should unlock the following:
Go straight ahead until you reach the Hel battle. Open up either door and smash the crystals to the left and the right of the ice throne (careful of the trolls attacking your troops). Now climb up in the middle and use the wheel to open the path to Hela. Climb up all the way and use Carnal as soon as you reach her. Smash her to pieces to unlock the following set of achievements:

ACT 3 - Sins of the Fathers
´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´Episode 15 - The Golden Dragon
Look at the shield in your bed chamber to start the final episodes. Head for Grendels Cave (you should know the way from previous levels) to finish the episode.
Episode 16 - The Final Battle
Now it is time to fight your son. Considering which path you took, this battle may change the outcome. However, since we chose the bloodiest path, we will get attacked by Shadow Warriors. Basically, abuse your Carnal Rage to finish the dragon off by attacking his legs. Make sure to get out of reach of his stomp attacks and he should be downed in no time. After the cutscene, finish the quicktime events (rage can be activated here) to tear his heart out and finish the episode, unlocking following achievement:
Here is a great video on this battle, although this is the heroic background. Credit goes to adiash73
Epilogue - The hero king
After a set of rather lengthy cutscenes, the game will finally end, netting you the following achievements and the credits:
Here is a good video on each level in detail, credit goes to thejames2929.
Here is a guide for the collectibles, credit goes to needtoachieve.
Now it is time for the last achievements, so start a new game on Thane difficulty.
Story on Thane
In retrospect to the previous playthrough, we will concentrate on the Heroic skill tree this time, meaning that we never use the Carnal Rage ability unless we have to. The exceptions to this rule are:
- The first levels before we get our first runes;
- The battle against the Shadow Warriors;
- The battle against Brecca (only if the battle is too hard).
Make sure to collect the rune pieces and legendary weapons again since this will speed the process up tremendously. Play through the levels as always but this time, when we fight the Mother of Demons, we don't use any rage and try to resist her for over 2 minutes to get 7 bonus runes. Also you will get bonus runes if you fight bosses without using Carnal Rage. Make sure to always fill the heroic meter by killing enemies (stabbing them on the ground earns bonus points) and always use the Heroic Storm whenever possible to reduce later grinding time.
As soon as we reach episode 10, we'll have a chance to grind Heroic Storms. At the point where we need to kill the leader, infinite enemies will spawn. Simply kill them and use the Heroic Storm until you get the following:
Here is a video, credit goes to adiash73.
You will also unlock the max heroic index achievement before reaching Hel:
Before the battle against Hela, you will have enough runes (as long as you followed the advice to never use Carnal Rage and resisting the Demons Mother longer than 2 minutes) to buy all the upgrades. This will unlock your last achievement:
Congrats on a full 1,000G!
