2. DJ Hero General Hints and TipsUpdate notes

Before I give any tips I recommend that you play the tutorial to familiarize yourself with the key concepts of the game. Playing the tutorials unlocks an achievement so if you are just reading the walkthrough and don’t want to start the game yet I’ve linked two videos of the tutorials:

Now that you are familiar with the games mechanics I can give you some tips:

Make sure that you are playing the colored buttons with your strong hand! Also make sure that your hand is positioned in such a way that you are scratching with your thumb and not your pinky finger.

You can turn lefty flip on in the option menu if you need to play left handed. The turntable controller consists of two parts that can be attached to each other on either side.

I learned to play with my weak hand on the colored buttons but with a right flip configuration. This results in me having to scratch with my pinky finger which decreases stamina and hurts my fingers after playing for just a few hours. Make sure that you learn from my mistake!

Make sure that you are playing in a comfortable and steady position. You will need to play through 93 different mixes (songs), then multiply that by the various difficulties you decide to play on to complete the game. I recommend playing on a table so you have enough grip on the controller as playing on your lap is not ideal. Try and have your arms in a similar position as when you are typing on a computer keyboard. Also stop playing when experiencing any pain in your hands. This game can be very carpal tunnel syndrome inducing if played incorrectly.

You cannot fail songs in DJ Hero. Your aim is always to 5 STAR the song. You obtain points for every action that you have to perform during the song. Every song requires a certain amount of points to 5 STAR it. Now to maximize your points you will want to focus on obtaining both Euphoria and Rewinds as using these will double your multiplier for a short amount of time. However, if you make a mistake when using either of these you will lose your multiplier. It is generally a good idea to use your Euphoria and especially your Rewinds during sections that you know you can hold your multiplier on.

Activating Euphoria will automatically play the crossfades for you. Use this to your advantage! Intense crossfading sections can be entirely avoided by activating Euphoria at the right time which turns a hard section into a free points section. Strategize accordingly on harder songs. For example, about halfway through “Noisia - Groundhog” there is a very tough combination of crossfades and button presses. Activate Euphoria so you only have to focus on the buttons. This will make the section much easier and now you can score a lot of points on x8 multiplier, which you will need as this song is very hard to 5 STAR on EXPERT.

When using rewinds you can either do a 360 degree rewind or a 720 degree rewind. The 720 degree rewind rewinds the song twice as far as the normal 360 degree rewind which gives you more extra points to score on. Therefore it is almost always a better idea to rewind 720 degrees to optimise your score. To activate a 720 degree spin try to spin the plate as hard as you can while not losing your focus. You don’t have to spin longer as the game only registers how fast you spin initially. Use this to your advantage by catching the plate immediately after the game registers the rewind.

For the Directional Scratching that you will need to do on EXPERT. What works in most situations is look at the first direction you will need to scratch to and afterwards scratch up and down to the rhythm of the song. This might be hard at first but you will have to practice until you feel how to do this. Once you get this down it will mostly feel like muscle memory and you don’t need to pay any attention to the scratching. You will need to nail this technique to even stand a chance to complete this game.
