Damsel is a 2D platformer developed and published by Screwtape Studios and will be available August 8th for Xbox One for $16.99. I absolutely loved this game, it at times is very difficult, but when you're always trying to beat someones time and score on a level makes it worth trying over and over until you get it. Plus the art and style to this game, to me is one of my favorites.
You start off the game with a few options. There is Damsel Dash where you will play through a few levels trying to get the highest score that you can. Then there is campaign the main option to start out with, where you will play through three episodes. Then once you complete an episode I would suggest then going to the arcade where the goal is to complete each episode of the campaign in a row, getting only 3 tries per level with the goal in getting the highest score you can. Then lastly there are the credits and the options, although the only thing you can change in the options is language and a few audios.
So starting out with the campaign, as I said earlier there are three episodes. However, each episode has a total of 25 levels. The whole story of this game is that there is a drink called "Red Mist" which is very popular and the vampires really love it. However more and more civilians keep coming up missing and the first thought is that the Red Mist corporation is behind this. So they send in there best weapon to get to the bottom of this, with Damsel. She comes barring a shotgun, which shoots really fast, a cape, and incredible agility with double jumps and dashes. So there's not a real big story here, but I love how it is written out and after each episode, there will be a page from a comic book. Each one giving you some lore to the world, vampires, and the operation that is going on. The art to the comic books are beautifully drawn and I enjoyed reading them throughout the game. Each episode is a comic book so there is 3 total.

Now upon entering each level you will have a main task to complete such as kill all vampires, rescue all the hostages, or hack the laptops to name a few. Each level will also have skulls floating around everywhere for you to collect to add to your score, if you decide to play on the hardest difficulty these skulls will all need to be collected without dropping your combo to even complete the level. Or if for some reason you just want to playthrough the game quickly you can just ignore all the extras and do the main objective to finish the level. This is a big reason why this game is great for anyone that enjoys speedrunning. I, of course, recommend going for the best score and doing everything in the level, especially because each level and episode is on a global leaderboard so you can compete with everyone that chooses to play this game.
There are a ton of other things throughout the level that will also be trying to stop you making you rethink your strategy. One of the main ones is the blood barrels which will be in most of the levels. These are great as long as you don't mess up. Meaning if you go up to the barrel and hit it, you will gain an extra heart for your health. However if you shoot it or an enemy shoots or hits it a flying vampire will come out and start throwing fireballs at you, these enemies are very annoying. It will also sometimes spawn an enemy on the ground, but they will have way more health and will regenerate health. Then there are added things like fire barrels, which if you are at a distance and shoot them by some enemies it's an instant kill. But if the barrel is close to you, you're going to do some good damage to yourself or if a hostage is nearby it and you happen to shoot it you will fail the mission.

Finally, there are some other obstacles like time bombs which when you get close enough will start to tick and you will have a short amount of time to defuse the bomb if it goes off you fail the mission. Then there are lasers, electricity, and spikes as if there wasn't enough to kill you already. The main thing will the lasers and electricity is though that it makes you take a different path and you will need to find a switch or generator to turn them off so you can reach the area you wanted to go to. Or if you happen to fall through the electricity it will shut off, but you will be hurt and won't be able to shoot your gun for a moment, there are also enemies that shoot electricity and do this too you too. For me though the biggest obstacle was the hostages. They are almost always by enemies and when you see a vampire you just want to shoot your gun as fast as possible to kill him, but this is where you have to watch your trigger finger because one shot to a hostage you fail the mission. This is probably the most common way for me to fail a mission.
Now for the arcade mode and damsel dash. The levels are the same as in the story and are broken up into three episodes like the story. However, you have to complete all 25 levels in a row with only having three deaths per level. So if you shoot a hostage or don't defuse a bomb in time there goes one of your three lives. The other big difference is that most of the levels will just be to collect the skulls instead of rescue hostages or hack the laptops. Those will still be there to do for extra score but are not needed to progress. The only time this changes is during the red mist challenges. The goal for these are to speed run the levels doing whatever they want you to do. Then depending on your time, you will get a grade rank and points. These are very hard to get high ranks on. So then if you were able to complete each level for that episode you will then be put up on the global leaderboards to see how you fair against others around the world. Then for the Damsel dash which is similar to the arcade, just way fewer levels. This mode has a pre-set group of levels and the goal is to get the highest score on them.

Achievements
The achievements in this game, for the most part, are easy to do. To complete the game though you are going to need some serious patience and skill. Even in the email I got for this game they said some achievements are going to be hard to get, they weren't kidding. The ones you most likely will have trouble with is completing the game on hothead mode which is beating every level without dropping your skull combo. Or doing all the arcade runs for each episode as you can only mess up or die three times per level. The final achievement though is going to be for getting an A rank on all of the Red Mist challenges. These are basically just speedrunning the levels, but are really hard to A rank. No one has been able to do this yet.

Verdict
I loved this game, has great music beautiful artwork and comics to go along with it. A good enough story to continue reading the comics and has great combat and platforming. For $16.99 I think there is plenty of content here for that price especially if you are going to go for all achievements in the game.
