1. Day of the Tentacle Remastered Walkthrough overview

Hello and welcome to the Day of the Tentacle Remastered complete achievement walkthrough!

Background

Day of the Tentacle Remastered was originally developed and published by LucasArts in 1993, and is the sequel to their game Maniac Mansion (1987), which was originally released for the Commodore 64 and the Apple II. (Those are super old gaming systems/computers for all you young bucks out there.)

Day of the Tentacle Remastered version was developed by Double Fine Production, whose founder, Tim Schafer, was also the co-lead game design on the original game, along with Dave Grossman. Not only was this the first game Schafer & Grossman co-led game design on, but these gentlemen also introduced something into this game that, at the time, had never been done before. Nowadays many, many games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops and Goat Simulator have since mirrored. They included the entire prequel game, Maniac Mansion, playable on a computer designed to looked like a Commodore 64, into this game.

Gameplay

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is a classic Point & Click adventure game. You play as Bernard, the socially inept, yet loveable, geeky nerd, and his housemates, Laverne, the medical student who is clearly insane, and Hoagie, the laid-back roadie. Yup, the best playable characters EVER!!!

Your goal is to assist these three as they travel in time get stuck in different time periods, and attempt to save the world from the evil, purple tentacle, who just recently acquired arms (bum...bum...bum). You are actually able to toggle between characters during gameplay using the cn_LB and cn_RB buttons.

Visually, you are actually given two options while playing the game; original rendered mode and remastered. (You can switch between the two at any point using the cn_back button.) The original mode gives you the 9-command arrays such as, "Pick Up", "Open", and "Use", on screen, where remastered shows you all potential options available after pressing cn_X. Assuming everyone prefers the 2020 graphics available, I will be writing this walkthrough using the remastered visuals.

Walkthrough

This walkthrough is written to guide you through all 58 achievements in one playthrough, and is, hopefully, structured to unlock all achievements in the most logical order.

There are 28 main storyline achievements that will naturally unlock while playing, and the game's storyline is very straight forward and linear. However, while the storyline progresses on a very linear path, there can be variety in the order achievements unlock depending on which character you're playing, when you're playing them, or which items your interacting with and when. Again, this walkthrough is attempting to use the quickest path to completion.

There are 27 missable achievements (good thing you're following a walkthrough, right???). If you weren't using a walkthrough, I believe a good majority of the missable achievements would be things you would either attempt while playing, or might accidentally stumble into. I will still attempt to guide you, though, unspoiled, so you can solve all the riddles/puzzles/craziness that is Day of the Tentacle Remastered.

There are 2 achievements that can only be earned by playing Maniac Mansion, the prequel game which is built into this game. Maniac Mansion is accessible at almost anytime during the storyline. While this walkthrough suggests playing Maniac Mansion at your first opportunity, there will be multiple opportunities to earn without backtracking. There will be a warning before you hit the "point-of-no-return" requiring you to start a new game (or reload a save) in order to play this game-within-a-game. For this just looking at earning these achievements, Maniac Mansion has been given its own page in this walkthrough.

There is also 1 buggy achievement:

This achievement doesn't unlock when it should, but unlocks by reloading the game after you've completed all other achievements.

Without farther ado, I leave you with a quote that sums up this fantastic game:

Dr. Fred: What have you done this time, you meddling milquetoast? Now Purple Tentacle is free to use his evil mutant powers to take over the world, and ENSLAVE ALL HUMANITY!
