Decay Walkthrough

6. Part 4

Part 4

Note that the controls change rather suddenly here. I'd love to say it's a clever, lore driven mechanic but in truth, it's because the original four parts were released many months apart, and improvements were gradually made to them. In any case, you look around freely - for the most part - using the left stick, with the cursor being locked to the centre of the screen in these cases. Press cn_A to move forward. You can hold either trigger on the controller to speed up or slow down the rate of movement. If you ever played Myst III on the OG Xbox, it's exactly like that.

Collectibles appear exclusively in this part of the game. Follow the guide EXACTLY and you'll get them all no problem. There is a point of no return: after going into the basement and solving the anagram puzzle there, that's it. Before going into the basement you should have 9/10 COINS, 9/10 DIARY PAGES and 3/4 HANDCUFFS. The remaining ones are found down there.

A note on ENDINGS: There are eight very, very slightly different endings to the game. You will have to play through all of Part 4 TWICE to get two of them and do six partial playthroughs for the rest (the partial ones take only two minutes apiece; don't worry). This is because there is a point of conversion you will reach which ties you into one of two paths. One path has two ending variations, the other has six. Due to the single save slot which gets overwritten by the autosave, we have no choice but to play through the whole chapter twice. The second playthrough is MUCH quicker, however, as we don't have to grab collectibles or miscellaneous achievements

For you video fans, here's the final part of Billz video guide:

The Barn

You'll find yourself here later, but for now go through the only door you can: The one on the left

Grounds

  • Turn to face away from the house in the distance, and examine the door frame suspended in the air
  • COIN 1/10: Face the door-frame and turn about 90 degrees to the left. Mash the cn_A button around the base of the closest tree trunk until you collect the coin hidden there
  • Turn back to face the house and walk forward
  • Look to the left, and pick up the wooden plank leaning against the tree
  • Look back towards the front door of the house. Move forward if necessary, and look at the hole to the lower left. Examine it to move closer
  • Grab the bucket, then use the plank to grab the handle for it from the same spot
  • Select your inventory and combine the handle and bucket
  • Examine the well and use the bucket on it. Use the handle on the left of the well to lower the bucket into the depths by rotating cn_LS
  • Examine and Use the handle on the left side of the well
  • When you hear the splash, rotate in the opposite direction to reel in the bucket and collect the key from it
  • COIN 2/10: Lower the bucket once again, and pull up following the splash. Examine the bucket for the coin
  • Go back to the front door of the house
  • Use the key to unlock the door, and head inside

Downstairs

  • DIARY 1/10: Pick up the diary page near the stairs off the ground. You can read them from your inventory to flesh out the story of the house, but it isn't necessary for the achievement - collecting them will suffice.
  • COIN 3/10: Turn 180 degrees and look in the horseshoe hung above the front door
  • Turn back around and go upstairs. We'll return here later

Upstairs

  • SAVE THE GAME before going for the upcoming missable achievement
  • Examine the box on the table in front of you for the first of many puzzles in this chapter!
  • To open the iron box, you need to create a symbol on the disc in front of you. The disc has been split into 5 rings, which you can rotate. The catch is, some rings rotate others along with them.
  • We need to do this in less than ten moves for an achievement. I'll show you how to unlock it in just seven moves:
  • In your head, number the rings from 1 to 5, with 5 being the centre circle and 1 being the outermost ring. Now rotate them in the following order:
  • Ring 4 anticlockwise x1
  • Ring 3 anticlockwise x4
  • Ring 2 anticlockwise x2
  • The box will unlock, and you'll get the following achievement:

The Iron Box

Unlock the iron box in 10 moves in Part 4.

  • DIARY 2/10: Take the diary page, the wooden puzzle piece and the compass from inside the iron box
  • Turn 90 degrees right and 'select' the two rooms to reach a static screen where you can select to go in either door
  • Go into the door on the left to get to the Eye Puzzle Room

Eye Puzzle Room

  • Turn to your right, where there's a table
  • COIN 4/10: Take the coin on the table
  • Look back to the left, where there's a sliding puzzle with a piece missing.
  • I can't really give you a detailed solution here. All you need to do is slide the pieces around until you make a picture of an eye. It's not hard - five minutes or less When you've finished, the bottom right panel will be empty: Use the wooden puzzle piece you got from the iron box to complete the puzzle. This will also unlock the following achievement:

Picture Solver

Complete the picture shuffle puzzle in Part 4.

  • DIARY 3/10: Take the Diary Page, the pipe and the crucifix
  • Go through the archway to the left of the sliding puzzle
  • DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP: Turn 90 degrees right and look through the window. Exit the scene, then look again... This is important, as it spawns an item later that we'll need to progress.
  • DIARY 4/10: On the ground, to the left of the window
  • HANDCUFF 1/4: Hanging on the wall to the right of the window.
  • It's time for a new puzzle! Check the toy on the table to start this one off, but:
  • SAVE THE GAME first, as the following achievement is MISSABLE.
  • The puzzle features 8 wooden rods, four vertical and four horizontal. Consider them to be numbered and lettered as shown in the below screenshot, with the vertical rods numbered 1-4 and the horizontal ones labeled according to their colour:

Balls

  • Rods can only be moved from the side where they stick out, so it's impossible to move them the wrong way. As long as you follow my order the achievement for completing it in less than 60 moves will be yours.
  • Now, simply move the rods in the following order to complete the puzzle in just 38 moves:
  • B G 4 G
  • B 4 G W
  • 4 W G 4
  • R 2 W 2
  • 4 W 4 2
  • G 2 R G
  • B 4 B 4

You got Balls

Arrange the colored balls in 60 moves in Part 4.

  • Take the Racoon (TOY 1/3)
  • Leave the eye puzzle room
  • Activate the corridor between the two rooms again, and this time enter the door to the right
  • You can hear a knocking rhythm in here... Four taps, then two, then three, repeated. (4,2,3)
  • Examine the cupboard at the back of the room to see what's creating the knocking sounds...
  • COIN 5/10: Face the beds, and look up towards the upper right corner of the room. Click repeatedly in the very top corner here until you collect the coin
  • Leave the room, go back downstairs and head back outside
  • Look down on the ground and collect the stick here
  • COIN 6/10: Pick up the coin next to the stick
  • Go back inside the house and head into the room on your right

Light My Way Room

  • Ignore the writing on the wall for now, turn to your left and enter the other room
  • DIARY 5/10: look to the right. The diary page is on the ground near the table
  • HANDCUFF 2/4: Turn back around. You'll see the handcuffs on the sofa
  • COIN 7/10: Look at the feet on the sofa. hammer your cn_A button as you do so to collect the coin
  • Activate the sheets on the bed to find the Dog (TOY 2/3)
  • Leave the room until you're back to the entrance of the house. Go into the door on your left this time

Maintenance Area

  • Examine the contraption on the back wall
  • Use the Pipe you have in your inventory to start the pipe puzzle! (There's no achievement for this one, unfortunately)
  • This is easy. Simply click the green buttons in the following order, imagining they are numbered 1-4 from left to right:
  • 1, 2, 4, 1, 4
  • Look in the barrel to the left of the contraption
  • Pick up the light bulb, and go through the door into the next room. If you find yourself back in the entrance hall, you've gone through the wrong door.

Light Bulb Room

  • The entire room is a puzzle. Turn to your left and find the only socket without a bulb
  • Use the light bulb you collected in the previous room on this socket
  • Remember picking up the compass ages ago? We need to use it here. Get it out by pressing cn_X, and align yourself with the bulb on the EAST wall.
  • You now need to switch the bulbs on in the following order: East, West, North, South. You have to put your compass away to interact with the bulbs.
  • You must now turn three of the bulbs back off, and they must be switched off in this order: South, North, East
  • If you've done this correctly, the western bulb will remain lit and open a secret passage, as well as unlocking you the following achievement:

Navigator

Open the passage to the secret room in Part 4.

Hidden Room

  • You can't leave this room without completing the puzzle here.
  • Examine the Suitcase. The code to the lock matches the knocking sounds from the room upstairs (4, 2, 3). Unlock it and open it
  • HANDCUFF 3/4: Take the handcuffs from the case
  • DIARY 6/10: Take the diary page from the inside back flap of the case
  • Pickup the Flashlight and lockpick part 1/2
  • Back out from the suitcase, and look to the ground on the left. Collect the screwdriver from the floor.
  • Turn around to face the bomb puzzle on the back wall
  • DIARY 7/10: On the ground beneath the bomb puzzle
  • SAVE YOUR GAME as there is a MISSABLE achievement coming!
  • Examine the bomb puzzle to see it up close. Use the screwdriver from your inventory but DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE YET!
  • You need to run the blue wire between the blue terminals and the red wire between the red terminals.
  • You achieve this by clicking on any of the junctions with screws in them, which will rotate the four attached tiles 90 degrees around the screw.
  • You have two minutes to accomplish this in general, but in order to get the achievement for doing so, you must finish the puzzle in forty seconds or less!
  • This means that, at the end, you need to have 1:20 left on the clock at least.
  • You can pause the game after rotating a wire to check out the solution in the picture below:

Bomb

If you manage to do it in forty seconds, you'll unlock the hardest achievement in the game:

Bomb Expert

Disarm the bomb in 40 seconds in Part 4.

  • The secret door will re-open. Return to the entrance hall, and go back into the door across from this one to the Light My Way puzzle

Light My Way Room

  • Use the flashlight on the Light My Way writing to start a puzzle
  • COIN 8/10: Navigate through the maze using the left stick. You're looking for a letter C at a dead end. If you find an X, DO NOT go into it - that's the exit! Reach the letter 'C' and a coin will drop in the room from the curtain on the left-hand side. Collect it, then restart the puzzle with the torch
  • To solve the puzzle, navigate through until you reach the 'X'. Go into it and a ring will drop from the same place the coin fell before. Collect the ring. You'll also have unlocked the following achievement:

Light My Way

  • If you don't, just go straight back across and try again. When you've unlocked the achievement, make sure you're on the opposite side from where we first came upstairs.
  • DIARY 8/10: Look back at the hole you crossed with the plank. The diary page is clearly visible on the floor nearby
  • Turn back around, and enter the door on your left

Chelsea's Room

  • COIN 9/10: In plain sight at the bottom left of the picture as soon as you walk in
  • Turn to your left and re-arrange the letters to spell out the name "Chelsea"
  • Turn left again from there and take the Monkey (TOY 3/3) and the dummy (pacifier).
  • Turn back to face the crib in the room. Examine it
  • Place the three toy animal faces you've collected on the mobile above the crib by selecting each brass ring in turn. They must be placed in the following order:
  • Dog on the left
  • Monkey on the right
  • Racoon in the middle
  • If done correctly, you'll automatically back out from the crib scene. If not, collect them back up and place them again.
  • Face the door as if you're going to leave. Move the cursor over the door for a surprise and an achievement:

  • Turn around and look at the three paintings with the three bowls.
  • Place the ring in the bowl under the hand
  • Place the dummy (pacifier) in the bowl under the baby
  • Place the crucifix in the bowl under the priest. The middle picture will raise up, revealing a secret compartment
  • Take the Gun, Bullet, and lockpick part 2/2
  • DO NOT load the gun! Leave the room

Upstairs

  • SAVE THE GAME!
  • SAVE THE GAME!
  • SAVE THE GAME!
  • Cross the plank again

THIS IS THE POINT OF DIVERSION, SEPARATING TWO "CHOOSE LISEY" ENDINGS FROM THE OTHER SIX "CHOOSE EMILY" ONES

  • As you move to use the stairs down, a ghost will appear and who you who you wish to save will ask you who you want to save
  • We're going to go for the best ending first, so choose Lisey.
  • Go downstairs. Examine the rug to the bottom right of the stairs
  • Move it to reveal a trap door
  • Use the Lockpick from your inventory (you don't have to combine the two parts of the lockpick, just use it)
  • This is an easy puzzle! Rotate one part of the lockpick with cn_LS until you hear a click. Hold it there, and rotate the other part with cn_RS until that also clicks. This will remove part of the lock
  • Repeat this action several more times until all the piece of the lock are open, and you can lift the hatch

This is the POINT OF NO RETURN, so make sure you have 9/10 COINS, 9/10 DIARY PAGES AND 3/4 HANDCUFFS

  • Enter the basement, and get an achievement for doing so:

  • Move forward ONCE and quickly grab the key from the chair on the right. It can be a little fiddly to pick up. Remember you can use the triggers to slow down or speed up cursor movement
  • Turn back around and go back to the bed. Examine the bed and use the key you just picked up on the woman (Anne Soderlund).
  • This will give you all the handcuffs (HANDCUFF 4/4) and unlock the following achievement:
