The goal of the game is to simply shoot your way through hordes of enemies, collect gold and get through the "Zones". Each Zone is seperated by a wall that comes up behind you as you pass through the Zone.
There is an in-game shop available that offers basic upgrades like more Health and more Attack Power. You can access the shop either in game at computer screens or every time you die, and you keep everything you bought after death.
