Deus Ex: Human Revolution Walkthrough

2. General hints and tips

Deus Ex - Human Revolution

This game is entirely possible to 100% in one play through, however this is dependant on your play style. If you are a runner-gunner in your face type player you will definitely have to play this twice.

If you just wish to play through this game once you will have to avoid killing any person in the game, with the exception to boss fights, not have any alarms sounded, and you will be required to play the game from the offset in the hardest difficulty, Give me Deus Ex. In relation to not killing people, you will receive a takedown tutorial, it is important to ensure that you tap B and not hold B as otherwise you will kill that person. To confirm you have only stunned the person you will receive the bonus xp named, "Man Down" and "Merciful Soul". Check the bodies and make sure they have 'zzz' and not skulls when you move/search them, if it shows a skull reload, also be careful with EMP blasts on mechs these can kill soldiers.

Not killing anyone through the game will get you:

Pacifist in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Pacifist282 (100)
Complete Deus Ex: Human Revolution without anyone dying by your hand. (Boss fights don't count.)
  • Unlocked by 13,258 tracked gamers (13% - TA Ratio = 2.81) 105,247

A positive thing about Deus Ex is the ability to save at any point and have multiple saves. I cannot emphasize how important it is to save regularly and to use at least two saves to allow for mistakes, being detected etc especially if you are going for the stealth run. I would also recommend saving before a hacking attempt, or at least until you get the hang of hacking. If you fail a hacking attempt it will sound an alarm. The annoyance of the loading times is insignificant in comparison to playing for 20+hours and getting detected ruining your chances of completing the game on stealth for the elusive:

Foxiest of the Hounds in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Complete Deus Ex: Human Revolution without setting off any alarms.
  • Unlocked by 10,533 tracked gamers (10% - TA Ratio = 3.16) 105,247

If you think you have been detected at any point, just revert back to a previous save. This achievement will just take patience, and being observant. The guards will always take the same path, you can walk directly under CCTV cameras, and always look for the least obvious route like a vent system, not only do these bypass a lot of guards, you get bonus XP. Guards can be alarmed, as long as they do not set an alarm off, this can be very useful when it comes to knocking guards out and using them as bait. I even had some guards show as hostile, I believe as long as you can down them before they set of an alarm or get a gun shot off you'll be ok, but I wouldn't risk it, just reload.

You will given the option at the beginning to go lethal or non lethal, select non lethal for obvious reasons. If you choose up close you get a stun gun and range gets you the dart gun. I would recommend picking one lethal weapon from the offset to concentrate on upgrading for boss fights. Also concentrating on just 2 weapons will allow you easier and quicker route to unlocking:

Gun Nut in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Gun Nut48 (20)
Fully upgrade one of your weapons.
  • Unlocked by 18,392 tracked gamers (17% - TA Ratio = 2.39) 105,247

Whenever you get spare ammo, grenades or weapons you don't use, sell them, You can then use the extra credits to get Praxis Kits.

This game will take anywhere between 20 - 30 hours, however I have heard people taking in excess of 50 hours as there are numerous areas to search, things to collect and read.

There are 29 XP books, or Ebooks which look like a PDA or tablet which are located in various areas through the game, some of these are missable, and I will make mention of there location and if they are missable in each chapter. Getting all 29 will get you this achievement:

Doctorate in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Doctorate164 (50)
Read all 29 unique XP books within a single playthrough.
  • Unlocked by 9,813 tracked gamers (9% - TA Ratio = 3.27) 105,247

There are plenty of miscellaneous Ebooks/newspapers and emails to read which give you background of the story, I won't be making any mention of these, but they are recommended to read.

This game is based around an XP system which in turn gives you Praxis points, you can also locate or purchase Praxis kits which you use to customise your character through different augmentations. There are various augmentations and its a matter of opinion which are best, however there are augmentations which assist with the stealth and hacking aspects and if you are going through a single play through it may be beneficial to concentrate on these areas. It should be noted that to access certain doors or computers you will need to increase your hacking ability, and to control cameras and turrets you will need to put points in these as well.

I would highly recommend Hacking capture 8/8, Hacking Stealth 3/3 Cloaking system 3/3, Sarif Series 8 Energy Converter, this basically allows you to hack anything and sneak easily, which is essential on a stealth and pacifist run. The ability to pick up heavier items is very useful.

You will be required to put 2 Praxis points into Icarus Landing System, this is to get a XP book some distance into the game.

Its advisable to visit the LIMB clinics at the beginning of Detroit and Shanghai and when you return later in the game. There will be 2 Praxis kits available each time, this will certainly help making Adam stronger and in turn the game easier, but each kit will cost you 5k.

There are a number of progressive achievements that you will naturally obtain through the game, these are:

Hax0r1! in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Hax0r1!22 (15)
Successfully hack 50 devices within the same playthrough.
  • Unlocked by 50,463 tracked gamers (48% - TA Ratio = 1.44) 105,247

Opportunist in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Perform 50 takedowns within the same playthrough. (Civilians don't count.)
  • Unlocked by 42,854 tracked gamers (41% - TA Ratio = 1.56) 105,247

Consciousness is Over-rated in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Knock out 100 enemies in a single playthrough.
  • Unlocked by 36,791 tracked gamers (35% - TA Ratio = 1.69) 105,247

For a number of side quests there are multiple achievements available, and I will make mention on how to obtain all outcomes.

Finally there are achievements linked to successful outcomes in conversations, these appear to be almost unique to each play through. I will make mention of how I obtained the achievement but in some cases you may have to try a slightly different option to get a successful outcome, but this will be clear as you read on. There is only one achievement that requires you to put 2 Praxis points into augmentations:

Ladies Man in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Ladies Man19 (10)
You convinced Mengyao to spill the beans on the mysterious Hyron Project. (Secret)
  • Unlocked by 27,877 tracked gamers (26% - TA Ratio = 1.94) 105,247

However if you save before the conversation, use the points, get the achievement and then reload you will not waste any valuable points.

You will also get Transhumanist for doing this, but it is likely you will get this a long way before that point in the game.

Transhumanist in Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Fully upgrade your first augmentation of choice.
  • Unlocked by 65,816 tracked gamers (63% - TA Ratio = 1.26) 105,247
