Story Walkthrough

At the beginning of the game you'll be asked to decide on your character's looks and such. You get the obligatory gimme achievement when you create your character.

The doc will have you walk over to a vigor tester and decide on your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skills. Distribute them as such:

6 STR, 5 Per, 5 End, 4 Cha, 8 INT (for more skill points between levels), 5 Agi, 7 Luck

We will get all the important ones to 10 and the rest will be respectable.

Next you have a sit-down with doc and do some psycho analysis mumbo jumbo. You can Skip through all the questions and ink blots since you're going to pick your skills anyway. Reset the skills chosen for you and take Speech, Lockpick, and Energy Weapons. For your two 'traits', take Skilled and Good Natured. Before you leave the house, look in a metal box in a door to your left for a Laser Pistol and some Energy Cells. Be careful talking to the doc at the exit; go slow so you can make sure to turn on Hardcore mode when prompted otherwise you need to start character creation over again.

Reminder: As you level, take the Educated perk as soon as you can for the additional skill points between levels. Other than Educated, you want to take Intense Training a full 10 times, putting one point into INT, 4 points into END, 3 points into STR, one into Luck and one into PER, making sure to do INT first.

Exit the Doc's house and follow the road South out of town. Don't worry, the main story isn't going anywhere. Keep heading South and when you hit the fork in the road with the sign pointing to Vegas, resist the urge to turn that way and keep going South. Deathclaws in the Northern fork will eat you for breakfast at level 1. If you want, search around South/Southeast of Goodsprings for Goodsprings Source, a radiation free water source you can fast travel back to if you get hurt to replenish dehydration and hit points any time you want. This is VERY handy on Hardcore (our only full playthrough).

On the Southern road you'll arrive at Primm first. Skip through the conversation with the fella that tells you Primm is off limits and keep heading South. When you see red on your compass ahead of you on the road, cut across the field Southeast. You will discover Ivanpah Dry Lake. Head South toward the road and you'll discover Ivanpah Race Track on your way. Head for what looks like a billboard or drive in movie screen in the distance and ignore the enemies around you as you can outrun them. You'll discover Nipton Road Pit Stop. Turn East and follow the road. You may take some damage from the Raiders at the Pit Stop, so if you wish to avoid this just skirt the pit stop to the north and angle down to the road so they don't aggro you.

On the road you'll pass through Nipton. Some loon Oliver approaches you and rambles about a lottery but just skip through. Don't follow him as you'll just get attacked and there's no real reward. Follow the road East/North/East again, staying well off the road on the dirt as you near an overturned truck so you don't hit land mines (marked with orange cones). The enemy you run into here is cake even at level one, so enter VATS (RB) and headshot him for a 2-shot kill.

Keep heading East until you hit Camp Searchlight and turn North. You'll pass Clark Field on your right at a bend in the road if you want to run over and discover it for fast travel purposes later. Keep to the road for the most part, because as tempting as overland shortcuts are we don't want to fight much at level 1.

Head up to the dinosaur to discover Novak, then keep heading North. If you have the DLC you'll see Abandoned BOS Bunker to the East. That location starts the Dead Money DLC. Once you power level to 30 you could head there straight away as you loose ALL equipment when you start it anyway, and you'll come out of it with some Gold Bars that sell for 8,000 each at Gun Runners. I had 8 of them in my inventory when I was done.

You'll run into a viper gang. I ran out of Laser pistol ammo here and switched to a 10mm pistol I got off one of the earlier viper guys to finish the leader off. Discover El Dorado Gas & Service and continue on. Head NW at the first fork, then West from 188 Trading Post (it's at the overpass/fork in the road). You should see New Vegas in the distance. Turn E/NE at the small road that crosses the 2 lane road you're on, then North when it forks and you'll soon arrive at Camp Golf.

Head to the big tent between the two rows of tents and talk to Sgt McCredie. You may need to wait until it's daylight for him to appear inside. This starts Flags of Our Foul Ups. Head outside and save your game. If you haven't hit level two yet, fast travel back to Clark Field and kill some Geckos until you hit level 2 so you can make sure your Speech skill is at 40.

Warp back to Camp Golf and talk to the redhead guy O'Hanrahan. Now look for Razz, the mohawk guy. Accept his portion of the quest, then save and quit in front of him.

Dashboard out and delete the game's Title Update. Launch the game and decline the update. Talk to him again and ask "Know anything about your squad mates?" This gives you a 40 Speech check option that you can repeat infinitely to power level to 30. You will be playing offline, remember, so no date stamped achievements! If you want the level achievements date stamped, do the loop until right before you level up, then save, dashboard and relaunch, download the update, and get your level achievement. Delete the update, reload the save before you levelled up, and continue on to the next one. You should get:

Remember to get your Speech, Barter, Lockpick, Science, Repair, and Medicine all to at least 75 as you level up, and take Educated as soon as possible as well as Intense Training ten times to increase your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats, 3 into STR, 4 into END, 1 into INT, 1 into PER, and 1 into LUC. After that split the points however you wish, but PERSONALLY I say avoid Stealth and Survival entirely. I personally raised all my weapon skills to around 70. It is of course your preference, but I just don't see the need for Stealth or Survival. You'll be so overpowered you'll be able to mow down anything playing on "Very Easy". I never even came close to dying, so messing around with a stealth attack on enemies was a waste of time. Once again though skill point usage is your call. Play the game how you want. Other perk choices other than the Intense Trainings are up to you.

I'm going to mention this now so you make sure to look out for them. Make sure you check all conversation options when doing quests and such, and any chance you get to do a Barter/Speech/Science/etc challenge in conversations take it. By the end of the game you will EASILY do 50 of them and get:

From here on out I will only be giving general locations, order of doing things. There is a great interactive map HERE that you can use to find things you haven't 'discovered' yet in the game, and the quests tell you exactly where to go so there's no need for step-by-step instructions.

Now warp back to Goodsprings and finish the first main story quest. This little "fight" will be cake now that you're level 30. Once it's over, I HIGHLY suggest taking a few hours to EXPLORE EVERYWHERE using the map below. It may seem tedious, but discovering 125 locations will net you two achievements as well as opening up fast travel to make the rest of the game an absolute BREEZE. After 50 and 125 locations discovered, you'll pop:

Map

As you're travelling, any time you kill an enemy that drops weapons or armor, loot it. Check your inventory periodically (or when you start to get encumbered) and use any like items to repair each other. In short order (probably before the 125 locations, but definitely by the end of RingaDing) you should have:

Once you have 125 locations discovered, follow along the main story quest line until you complete "They Went That-A-Way" and "Ring-a-Ding-Ding" quests. You'll need 2000 caps to get onto the Strip in New Vegas, but that shouldn't be a problem since you took the time to explore, likely killing/looting/selling plenty by now. If not, head to the small-time casino in Freeside and play blackjack there until you get banned from gambling there and you'll have 10,000 caps.

You should now be in one of the casinos in New Vegas, having dealt with Benny. Take the time now to visit the 3 casinos on the strip and play blackjack until you get banned at them too, and you will net another 34,000 caps. While you're there, play 10 spins of roulette and slots too. For blackjack, ALWAYS max your bet at 200 caps. ALWAYS double down when your starting two cards are 10, 11, or 12. ALWAYS split matching face cards (Q-Q, 10-10) and play them as two separate hands, following the double down rule on the first one. If the dealer is showing a face card, ALWAYS hit on anything less than 17. With a high LUCK, which you should have by now, you will win A LOT more often than you lose, so don't worry about saving periodically. You will max out your chips at each casino in minutes. A nice start up capital as well as some achievements:

Now, using your fast travel collect 6 of the 7 globes.

Goodsprings Cemetery: Rear left corner of the cemetery by a grave.

Hoover Dam: Visitor Center, on the welcome desk. You have to take the road from the south to get to the Dam. There is no other way in.

Old Mormon Fort: Enter the fort and turn 90 degrees right, enter the door and go up to the 2nd floor. It's on a shelf.

Jacobstown: Head into the lodge (the biggest building here) and it's on the reception desk.

Nellis AFB: Enter the Boomer Museum and look on a table to your right.

Vault 21: Pick the lock to Sarah's room, easy since you power levelled, to grab this one.

Fast travel back to the Strip and enter the Lucky 38. Talk to Mr. House to initiate his quest line. DO NOT DO HIS QUESTS at this time. You just need to initiate the first one in order to be able to take the elevator to the lounge where the globe is. Grab the 7th globe off the counter behind one of the cash registers in the Cocktail Lounge. Now head back to the penthouse and sell all the globes to the female robot for another 14,000 chips. The 7th globe will also get you:

Now warp to New Vegas Medical Clinic. Purchase all the stat-increasing implants (STR END PER LUC WIS AGI CHA). This brings your essential stats to 10 and the non-essentials respectably high. Good thing you had a high END so you could get all those sexy implants eh?

Warp to Gun Runners (just outside Freeside East Gate). Save your game. Using all this lovely start up capital, you can purchase whatever weapon mods they have available and the corresponding weapons, then wait 72 hours for them to restock and do it again. The pistol mods (.357 revolver long barrel, 10mm pistol silencer, etc) are the cheapest and the corresponding guns are cheap too so watch for those so you don't run out of cash. Of course sell any guns you've modded back to the vendor for more cash. Don't save your game after doing all this either, or if you do use a separate save file from your base save if you're worried about your game freezing up while you're "waiting". You'll get two achievements here.

Once that's done, reload the save you made before starting the stuff at Gun Runners. Buy yourself a good weapon here or at Silver Rush in Freeside. Note: for the following suggestion you will need the Gun Runners DLC. If you don't have it you'll need to use some other unique named weapon, and you won't be simultaneously working on the Gun Runners DLC achievement. This also means you may do your "10,000 damage" achievements in a different order than this guide. The achievement for the DLC is duplicated here and on the DLC page.

I highly suggest Gehenna at Gun Runners(the flaming sword) and a Tri-Beam Laser Rifle at Silver Rush. Gehenna is a melee weapon that also counts as a GRA weapon AND a Unique Weapon and it doesn't need to be repaired much at all as it drops condition very slowly. Use these two weapons exclusively until the end of the game and you'll get:

Now head to Crimson Caravan Company and find Ringo. Challenge him to a game of Caravan. Arrange your deck with as many 8's, 10's, 6's, and Kings as you can. To fill up the rest of the 30 cards, use Jacks first, followed by 7s and 9s. You ought to have 30 with just these but if not fill it up with whatever. Basically you want to get your 3 stacks as close to 26 as possible without going over. Ideally, start two stacks with an 8 or 10, and the 3rd with whatever you didn't use for the other two (aka 8, 8, 10 or 10,10,8). Place a king on all 3 stacks to double their value (16,16,20 or 20,20,16). Then place a 10 or 6 on the stacks to finish them off (26,26,26).

Use your Jacks on Ringos stacks to screw him up. If he puts a king on any of your stacks, just discard that stack and start it over. At the start of the game, discard any cards from your hand that aren't an 8, 10, K, or 6. You usually want to have a hand that makes two full stacks to 26 and the start of a 3rd, aka a hand like this (10,K,6, 8,K,10,K) in your starting hand. There is no need to know the specific, detailed rules of the game if you follow the above instructions as this setup will make it very easy to get your 30 wins.

Now head to a shop someplace and purchase a few Stealthboys. Warp the Strip entrance and head to Vault 21. Enter and save your game. Activate a Stealthboy, and walk over beside Sarah, making sure your screen says Hidden. You can pickpocket Bubblegums from her, 1 at a time, until you get your 50 pickpockets. I suggest saving on a separate file than your main game after every few successful attempts to make sure you don't have to start over.

The rest are Arcade Gannon at the Old Mormon Fort in Freeside, Rex at the King's school in Freeside, Raul at Black Mountain (in the prison building), ED-E in Primm inside Nash's house (you should have high enough repair by now for him), Lily in Jacobstown, and finally Cass at Mojave Outpost (you have to do Birds of a Feather quest at the Silver Rush store in Freeside to recruit her as part of it), and SAVE FOR LAST Veronica in 188 Trading Post. Once you've recruited one, you can immediately tell them you don't want them travelling with you anymore so you don't risk them dying and possibly glitching this achievement. You shouldn't have any trouble recruiting them with all your skills so high, as you'll pass any necessary checks.

Veronica will be your last one so that if you haven't happened to find a Brotherhood of Steel Holotape, you can use her to get into the bunker. This also lets you skip the first quest in the BoS quest line, which is a bonus.

Now head to Hidden Valley with Veronica as your partner and head to the Brotherhood of Steel bunker entrance, which can be seen on your local map just north/northwest of where you start if you warp to Hidden Valley.

Complete the Brotherhood of Steel quest line and ask to join the brotherhood, which requires a show of faith by killing all the people at the Silver Rush weapons store in Freeside. See why we did the partner quest that involved the Silver Rush already? There's no achievement for the BoS quest line, but it will make the faction stuff faster later.

Ok, the only thing we have left now are the 4 faction main story lines and a few miscellaneous achievements. Start off initiating the other 3 factions' quest lines. Just like with Mr. House before, you're only going to START their quest lines. DO NOT complete even the first quest in the 4 factions or you may ruin another faction and force another playthrough (if you didn't have a backup save before starting this point).

The first quest for NCR is Things That Go Boom, given by Dennis Crocker at the NCR Embassy in the portion of the Strip furthest North.

For the Legion, head to Cottonwood Cove and from there travel to the Fort via the boat guy to speak with Caesar to initiate Render Unto Caesar.

For the Wildcard path, head to the Benny's room in the Tops casino and find Yes Man.

Make a BASE SAVE now, and make a backup of it just in case you accidentally save over it.

This is optional, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to reload by Base Save one last time so that you keep all 4 factions Neutral as well as keeping the Legion guys around for the Gun Runners challenges later. If you've already killed them and saved over your base save, you'll have to do harder/more annoying challenges for Gun Runners rather than the simplest ones outlined in my DLC walkthrough on the next page. You only lose one, maybe two levels from the end-game quest lines and it's nice to knock out the DLC on a save file where everyone is still Neutral so you can do whatever you want.

At this point you just have the Stimpack, Food, and a few damage achievements left, and possibly hacking 25 terminals as they seem to be somewhat scarce in New Vegas compared to Fallout 3. Head to the New Vegas Medical Clinic and buy up all their Stimpacks. Wait 72 hours and do it again. Continue to do this until you have around 150 Stimpacks just to be safe. Go to wherever you store your loot (I used Doc's house, those metal boxes inside the door) and empty everything but your main armor and weapon and the Stimpacks. Now head to the Strip to the Ultra Luxe casino to its lounge and head to the counter. Buy up all his food, wait 72 hours, and repeat. Continue to do this until you have around 35-40 Omelets and whatever else piled up in your inventory.

Teleport to the B-29 crash site in the lake to the East. Open your pipboy and go to your Stimpacks; hold RB and hit the d-pad down to set it as a hot key on D-pad down. Drown yourself until you start losing HP and when you get around 50% start spamming Stimpacks while you continue to lose health, making sure not to max out your health so you get the full value from them. You'll eventually pop:

Now drown a little more until you're damaged a little. Open your pipboy again and go to your healing items. Start eating food. You can sort of spam it, just don't spam too fast. I basically just tapped the button once every 1-2 seconds to make sure it always registered the HP from the food item. You can go over to the Data tab, under Miscellaneous, and hit Y to switch to Challenges then X to switch to Other Challenges. Desert Survivalist is the food challenge so you can check and make sure it's going up. You'll get:

You should just have Unarmed, Explosives, hacking 25 terminals, and Regular Guns 10k damage achievements left by now if you used the Tri-Beam Laser Rifle and Gehenna (the sword) the whole game to get those other 10k damage achievements. You may very well have gotten Lead Dealer too.

Reload your Base Save again to get rid of all the worthless food and unnecessary Stimpacks you bought, or simply warp to Gun Runners and sell the food and keep the Stimpacks. Buy a good unarmed weapon (a bit of an oxymoron, Power Fist works fine), a good regular weapon that shoots bullets, and some explosives weapons (a missile launcher, fatboy, grenade launcher, grenades, etc). Head to the Strip and make a separate save from your base save.

Now go on a killing spree with explosives. Kill everyone inside all the casinos, everyone at the NCR Embassy (a mini nuke from the fatboy works great from across the street to the NCR embassy if you aim it right and don't kill yourself), and all the robots on the strip. You can keep going back and forth between sections of the Strip and robots will spawn, or you can warp to the Hidden Valley and head inside, murdering all the Brotherhood guys with more explosives. If you still haven't popped the achievement, just warp to Camp Golf and various other towns/locations and murder people with explosives until you unlock:

Your last achievement will likely be the one for hacking 25 terminals if you wound up like I did. There just aren't that many terminals in this game! Or maybe I didn't search enough, lol. There are additional terminals in the DLC of course, so you could finish it that way like I did. I think I hacked at least 7 or 8 terminals in Dead Money. Or you can knock it out now to finish the base 1k. There's a list of hackable terminals below pulled from the Fallout NV wikia. You ought to have at least 15 or so hacked by now if you've been exploring a little and hacking all of them you came across while doing the sidequests. Some of them are DLC specific (as notated in the Place column), but there are over 30 in the main game so you can just squeeze out 25 if you're thorough before doing the DLC.
