42. Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age Side Quest - Three Medallions & the Esper ChaosUpdate notes

Side Quest - Three Medallions & the Esper Chaos

This side quest is required in order to complete the Bestiary and to access the Esper Chaos.

There is the assumption that you have killed the King Bomb boss.

It's recommended that you complete this side quest when your party has an average level of 60. It's also known as the Nabreus Medallions Side Quest. It involves locating three Medallions and then using them to access three locked rooms in the Necrohol of Nabudis.

Before starting the First Medallion section, go and talk to the Nu Mou Roh'kenmou, who is found in The Muted Scarp area of the Nabreus Deadlands. You'll need to pick all three of the choices available when talking to him. It will save you a bit of time.

First Medallion

To start this side quest, you need to have completed the following Hunts:

  • Hunt 04: Waterway Hunting (Wraith – Rank I)
  • Hunt 06: Lost in the Pudding (White Mousse – Rank V)
  • Hunt 35: Crime and Punishment (Orthros – Rank V)

Information about these Hunts is found on their respective Hunt pages.

After completing Hunt 04, you will gain access to a house in Lowtown's North Sprawl. On the table is a Dusty Letter that you'll need to pick up. This letter details how to operate the Sluice Gates in the Garamsythe Waterway (however, what you'll need to do will be listed below, so you won't need to refer to the letter).

Completing Hunt 06 will give you the Broken Key, and in turn, the petitioner (Sorbet) will give you the Sluice Gate Key. This will allow you to operate the Sluice Gates.

Completing Hunt 35 will give you a Blackened Fragment. You now need to obtain another two fragments - the Dull Fragment and the Grimy Fragment - in order to obtain the first Medallion.

Travel to the Central Waterway Control area of the Garamasythe Waterway. Ensure that all of the Sluice Gates are deactivated (no orbs are glowing). Now you're going to interact with them in the following way:

  1. Turn No. 11 Waterway Control on
  2. Turn No. 4 Waterway Control on
  3. Turn No. 11 Waterway Control off
  4. Turn No. 3 Waterway Control on
  5. Turn No. 4 Waterway Control off

If done correctly, you'll hear a faint noise of something dropping on the ground. Go south of the Sluice Gates to find the Dull Fragment.

Dull Fragement

Now it's time to speak to Roh'kenmou. If you haven't already spoken to him in the Nabreus Deadlands, as mentioned above, go and do that. After doing that, he'll be at Old Dalan's Place in Lowtown's South Sprawl. Go there and speak to Roh'kenmou to hear about a most important object - a Medallion - that he needs finding. You can hand over both of the fragments you already have to Roh'kenmou. Now it's time to get the last fragment.

Go back outside to Lowtown. You'll be looking for a child name Filo. Filo is found in the most southeastern part of Lowtown's South Sprawl.

Filo will tell you about a Curious Woman in Rabanastre's Southern Plaza, so head there.

Curious Woman

After speaking to her, head over to the Muthru Bazaar. You'll need to speak to one of the Bangaa Merchants on the right side. He'll tell you about the necklace the Curious Woman is looking for, and how he sold it to an Imperial Solider.

Bangaa Merchants

Head over to Yugri's Magicks in the East End of Rabanastre, and speak to the Sotted Imperial who's kneeling in the corner. Ask him about the necklace, and then tell him about the woman near the fountain.

Head back down to Lowtown's North Sprawl, and look for Kytes, who's just outside Storehouse Five. Then head back to Filo. She'll ask "did you need something, Vaan?", and you'll need to choose "I need to see this woman.". After a short cutscene in Yugri's Magicks, you'll receive the Grimy Fragment.

Head back to Old Dalan's Place and speak to Roh'kenmou again. After giving him all three fragments, he'll inform you that they create the Medallion of Bravery. He then implores you to head to Nabudis, explaining that the Nu Mou may have found their new Medallion Barer (which is you!).

Second Medallion

To start this, head of Archades and speak to Roh'kenmou in Charlotte's Magicks shop, in the Molberry area of Archades. Roh'kenmou will explain that he sold the Medallion to a man named Otto.

Head to Old Archades, and go to the northern area of the Alley of Muted Sighs. The Proper Gent that you may have spoken to previously is actually Otto. Speak to him to eventually receive part of the Moonsilver Medallion. Go back to Charlotte's Magick and speak to Roh'kenmou. Give him the Medallion.

Third Medallion

Nabraeus Deadlands

There is one important item to collect in the Nabreus Deadlands, which is Warp. It's marked with the 1 on the map.

The last Medallion can be obtained by returning to the Muted Scarp in the Nabreus Deadlands (where you first met with Roh’kenmou). This time there will be a small gathering of Nu Mou. Speak to Ma’kleou and they will tell you that they plan to give you the Three Medallions however, you must travel to the Overlooking Eternity area to retrieve the final Medallion.

This is the location where you fight Roblon for Hunt 18: Adding Insult to Injury (Roblon - Rank VI).

To get to Overlooking Eternity, travel to the northwest corner of The Slumbermead, and look for a hidden pathway. Go through The Fog Mutters and onto Overlooking Eternity. There are a lot of Dead Bones enemies in Overlooking Eternity, so be careful to not be overwhelmed.

Overlooking Eternity

Approach the pedestal at the top of Overlooking Eternity to initiate a short cutscene. You will receive the Medallion of Bravery, the Medallion of Love and the Lusterless Medallion once the cutscene has completed.

These three medallions can be used to open doors in the Necrohol of Nabudis and eventually obtain an optional Esper Chaos, Walker of the Wheel.

Necrohol of Nabudis

The numbers refer to treasures that can be found in the Necrohol of Nabudis.

  1. Faith
  2. Bravery
  3. Protectga
  4. White Mask
  5. Silencega

A refers to a chest that contains the Ensanguined Shield. It has a 3% chance of spawning.

You'll also want to go to the Cloister of the Highborn. Marked on the map by Merchant is where you'll find the Bakamy Merchant. If you visit him after reaching the Pharos, you'll be able to purchase Esunaga for 12000 Gil. Visiting him after reaching Pharos - Third Ascent will allow you to purchase Hi-Ethers for 1110 Gil. He also sells a number of accessories and ammunition.

In order to get to the Esper Chaos, you need to defeat two other enemies, Fury and Humbaba Mistant. This is because completing these two fights will turn the Lusterless Medallion into the Medallion of Might. You can fight these two enemies in either order, it doesn't matter.

Boss: Fury - Cloister of Reason

The Cloister of Reason is accessed from the Hall of Ivory Covenant. As with most boss fights, it's recommended to buff your party with Protect, Shell, Haste, Faith, and Bravery.

Have one character know Dispel, to ensure that Fury's status effects can be removed.

Go over to the Door of Loathing and interact with it. Choose Examine the Depression, and then Use the Medallion of Love. After a quick cutscene, you'll go straight into a fight with Fury.

  • Level: 46
  • HP: 69,710
  • Steal: Blood Wool (55%), Moondust (10%), Aries Gem (3%)

The hardest part of this fight is actually hitting Fury. It has incredibly high evasion, so Magicks or Quickenings may be useful if you're having trouble.

Fury's attacks have a chance of inflicting Berserk, which is removed with Dispel. The following gambit is useful:

Ally: Status = Berserk > Dispel

During the fight, Fury will start using Bacchus's Wine to inflict Berserk on itself. Ensure that you use Dispel to remove Berserk from it. Each time they do, Fury will use another Bacchus’s Wine to re-enter the Berserk status effect, but casting Dispel each time will take valuable seconds off the clock and basically prevent Fury from attacking you while it is dealing with status effects.

If you did this fight first, you'll be informed that the Luterless Medallion keens... Meaning you have one more boss fight to complete.

If you did this fight second, you'll be awarded the Medallion of Might, meaning you can fight Chaos.

Boss: Humbaba Mistant - Cloister of Solace

The Cloister of Solace is accessed from the Cloister of Distant Song.

As with most boss fights, it's recommended to buff your party with Protect, Shell, Haste, Faith, and Bravery.

Go over to the Door of Horrors and interact with it. Choose Examine the Depression, and then Use the Medallion of Bravery. After a quick cutscene, you'll go straight into a fight with Humbaba Mistant.

  • Level: 46
  • HP: 314,086
  • Steal: Beastlord Hide (55%), Beastlord Horn (10%), Behemoth Steak (3%)

This is a fairly straightforward fight, just ensure that your party is fully buffed. It's recommended to have at least one active party member wear the Black Belt, as Humbaba Mistant's Tremor can inflict Disable. Use Esuna/Dispel when needed. He can also inflict Immbolize, but give how large he is, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

If you did this fight first, you'll be informed that the Luterless Medallion keens... Meaning you have one more boss fight to complete.

If you did this fight second, you'll be awarded the Medallion of Might, meaning you can fight Chaos.

Esper: Chaos, Walker of the Wheel

You will be unable to use the Attack command for this fight.

Now you have the Medallion of Might, it's time to face Chaos. Chaos is located in The Crucible. This is accessed through the Cloister of the Highborn.

Before starting the fight, ensure that you have a few Bowline Sashes equipped. (You can purchase these from the item vendor at the beginning of Old Archades.) These will give your party members immunity to Confuse. Ensure that you have the Telekinesis Technick, and use members who have access to this Technick (Shikaris being the primary one). This Technick will allow you to get around the Attack command being unavailable. If not, the Gil Toss and Souleater Technicks are useful as well, as well as using Magicks.

As with most boss fights, it's recommended to buff your party with Protect, Shell, Haste, Faith, and Bravery.

When your ready, head over to the Door of Despair and insert the Medallion of Might.

  • Level: 57
  • HP: 208,966
  • Steal: Taurus Gem (55%),Elixir (10%), High Arcana (3%)

The first thing you want to do is take out the four Chaosjets surrounding Chaos:

  • Air Chaosjet
  • Earth Chaosjet
  • Fire Chaosjet
  • Water Chaosjet

If you have the appropriate Magick users with the right Gambits, they'll be able to defeat these quite quickly. You have to take them out first as they will buff Chaos. Once they're dealt with, use Dispel on Chaos. For any Magick users, if they have a Bowline Sash on, ensure that you have Echo Herbs available, in case they get inflicted with Silence.

Once the Chaosjets are dealt with, Chaos is surprisingly easy to take down using Technicks and Magicks. Just keep the party's buffs up (mainly Bubble) and this fight will be over fairly quickly.

Esper Locked Licenses

Unlocking Chaos on the License Boards of the following jobs will unlock additional licenses:

  • Archer: Magick Lore (x5)
  • Bushi: Brawler
  • Knight: 390 HP, Revive, Excalipur
  • Machinist: 350 HP
  • Monk: White Magick 11, White Magick 12
  • Red Battlemage: Greatsword 3
  • Time Battlemage: 270 HP
  • Uhlan: Black Magick 6, Black Magick 7
  • White Mage: 310 HP, Greatswords 2

You can unlock the Knight's licenses with a Quickening, so the most optimal assigning for Chaos is either to a Monk. If you don't need those spells, either Uhlan or White Mages can make the most of being assigned Chaos.
