As a huge fan of the series, I thought I'd really like to play this game again for the achievements, TA ratio, and just being able to experience the other cut scenes that are exclusive to the PC version of the game. For me this game wasn't very enjoyable because of my PC being not where it should be in order to experience a nice flawless run through like I experienced on the Xbox 360 version. I had to play the game with the minimal settings just to be able to not lag to the point where the game wasn't enjoyable to play anymore. But still after all the difficulty I had with the game, I really enjoyed the core experience of replaying gears again but with a little more extra things added into it.
In order to make my review of the game fair, I won't use my difficulties as a negative impact on the overall score but more of a warning. Everything in this review will be ONLY my opinion.
I'm not going to go into too much if at all any detail of the story because of spoilers. Anyways the game's story mode plays, sounds, and works great! The game takes place in a post apocalyptic setting on Sera, where you and your squad will fight the enemy alien locust. You'll play as either main story character/ex convict Marcus Fenix or his best friend/squad member Dominic Santiago. The story is the exact same as Gears of War on the Xbox 360 but with only about 3-5 added chapters which add a small amount of content that helps the gamer understand how Marcus's squad got from one place to an other. Overall the game's story is short, well thought of and fun.
The game is a third person shooter and the biggest one to release at the time. The game play of the game is very unique and satisfying. I say satisfying because of the headshots on the enemy. I don't know why but it's awesome feeling just getting kills and headshots in Call of Duty. However, with Gears the headshots are very exaggerated and gory making every bit of the headshot nothing short of awesome. The effect of body parts falling off as you make an enemy explode is also impeccable and unique to the gears series. Every gun has different effects and usually useful in its own way. The executions are also unique to the gears series but in the first installment of Gears there is only 3 forms of executions but still a cool addition to the game. The game play is usually fast paced and shotgun friendly which is what Gears usually comes down to because of all the close quarters combat.
The games single player achievements differ very little from the Xbox 360 version. The achievements are very easy if you're a skilled player. The only remotely difficult achievement in the game is Insane difficulty. Unlike the single player achievements the multi-player achievements are mostly different. The weapon achievements have to be done over the course of 100 matches which takes a while but still this game is way shorter than Gears of War on the Xbox 360. The reason I say that is because you can use multiple silver accounts on your PC if your computer is strong enough to support the use of multiple accounts (which most are). The seriously achievements do take a while but can still be done way faster than the other one seriously on the console.
I'm not a huge person on graphics but if you have a great computer than you'll play in amazing quality and just have a blast! The graphics on Gears of War on the console were amazing at the time and on the PC they can be better than the consoles version! Anyways the graphics include great detail, different backgrounds that are special to each stage/chapter, art, in game and on the game case/strategy guide and character designs are pretty well done for the time as well.
The online is VERY addictive even if there are only around 16 maps. The game is just like call of duty's online system in that it's so fun that you'll replay the game over and over, heck people who love the game still play the hell out of it even if it's not very popular now. Of course I'm talking about the console's version of the game because this game is very dead online and can easily be boosted. This game actually has a multi-player game mode that wasn't in the consoles version being king of the hill. King of the hill is just like annex but the ring doesn't move and you must capture the point and remain there to win. The other online game modes include warzone, execution, assassination and annex. The online for gears of war was actually not supposed to be as big as it turned out to be because the developers just threw it in as an extra just to say they have online play with their game.
Coop is on the table for play sessions with friends and or randoms which makes the campaign even more fun to play. However, of course the online is the main replay value and oh does it have a ton. Depending on how much you like the game than you'll play this game a lot and really enjoy it.
Of course with every game comes bad glitches/bugs but this game has no ground breaking bugs that are completely unforgivable. The glitches are the "crab walk", "weapon slide", and the worst the "kung fu flip" but these are also glitches that can be very fun to fool around with in private matches and what not. This game was one of the most entertaining games on the Xbox 360 and it dissevers its spot at the top of 3rd person shooters. The only thing that would hurt your gears experience on the PC is a computer not made to run video games other than that you're golden.
