3. Gray Matter Story walkthrough

We will have to do 2 playthroughs, one in less than 5 hours and one with every other achievement. Since we don't know the game just yet, I recommend starting with the normal playthrough.

First Story Playthrough

In this playthough we will concentrate on getting the majority of the achievements. I will point out the places where you can get them, but there are 2 which have to be worked on during the whole game. The first would be to get all the bonus points during this playthrough, so use my walkthrough on that. The 2nd would be to have a 1000 dialogues. To accomplish this, you will have to interact with each and every item you see. Use either the BACK or RT Button to see the items you can interact with. Make sure to interact again with them various times, especially when you've changed them. Also do this in your inventory. This will take a lot of time and consideration, so be aware of that. This should be sufficient preparation, so let's start with the game (you can check on your percentages of the levels with LB!)

Chapter 1

As soon as you wake up, head towards the plant in the back right to find your rabbit Houdini. Get to your backpack and take everything out that you can. Now use the water tank on the water can to the right of the bed and upon filling it use both the carrot and the water tank on the cage. This will unlock your very first achievement. This will also earn you 19/19 points.

Leave the room and head to the foyer. Don't forget to interact with everything, otherwise you won't get the points! Now head downstairs and check the message on the door. Head for the living room and upon checking everything, go outside again. Exit through the main entrance, head to the backyard and explore it. Head back inside to encounter the housekeeper. Head to the kitchen and keep talking to her. Now get the envelope, go back to the kitchen and get the cell phone. Now press RB to activate the map and travel to Oxford Centre (63/63 points). This will unlock an achievement.

Dread Hill House

Head to Cornmarket Street (to the right) and enter the magic shop. Check the slots machine for the Daedalus sign and talk to Mephistopheles. Use the slot machine until you hit 21 (thrice right, twice left). Get the price to the right and ask him for the heart. Get back to Carfax Tower and enter it after reading the plaque. Close the door, check the box on the bottom and use a match on it. Go now to the plaque holding the school signs, use the clue you got to find the right one and head to Christ Church on your map. Check the black box near the fountain, use a water drop on the paper. Now use the cogwheel underneath the paper and get the piece inside. Go to the gardens, check the flowers to the lower right and check the ground underneath the lion statue. Dig the pieces up, head back to the Oxford Centre, down Queens Road and check the pub. Talk to all the students on the street, get the flyer from one of the students and head to the college. Talk to Harvey and get the spare cartridge. Now talk to Lisa, check your book for the smoke trick (flip pages with the right stick) and do the following steps in the exact same order.

  1. Spare cartridge in left sleeve
  2. Lisa's cartridge in right hand
  3. Spare cartridge in left hand
  4. Lisa's cartridge left hand
  5. Misdirect (upper middle icon, resembles a rabbit)
  6. Spare cartridge right hand
  7. Lisa's cartridge left sleeve

Press A and initiate the trick. This will unlock an achievement.

Now you get your first volunteer. Check now the phone on the wall, use your cell phone on the number and switch off the button sound (go to menu on the phone). Now talk to the student sitting on the bench. Do the psychic phone trick on her in the following order:

  1. Palm cell phone in left hand
  2. Misdirect
  3. Manipulate cell phone in left hand
  4. Cell phone in left sleeve

Execute the trick and you got another candidate. Now check the girl sunbathing and after you leave, talk to him and get his book and letter. Now do the ominous mailbag trick on him in the following order.

  1. Distract
  2. Letter in left hand
  3. Letter in left sleeve

Execute with A to get the letter. Head to Oxford Center and use the letter above a steam vent. Change the medical document for the test subject request and head back to the campus. Perform now the same trick and switch the now altered letter in the following order.

  1. Take the letter in right hand
  2. Misdirect
  3. Place it in the lower middle

Execute with A, talk to Helena that he will appear and head back to the Dr. Styles House and finish the chapter with a 100% on every single part. An achievement will unlock here.

Chapter 2

Upon starting, check the newspaper and head to the new destination. Talk to Eddie and get some intel from him. Now head for Oxford Centre and buy wildflowers from the market stall. Place them in the following places in the house.

  • Back in Sam's room, place the flowers in the vase

Head to the college, talk to the students and get the new location. Talk to Helena, get her spare card and compliment her on her new (the left card) and give negatives on the old one. This will give you the base for another magic trick, the destroyed ring trick. However, you will need to head to Oxford first to get from the magic shop the paper noisemaker. Get back to the library, place the noisemaker on the shredder and initiate the trick in the following order.

  1. Noisemaker remote in left hand
  2. Old ID card in right hand
  3. Manipulate right hand
  4. Misdirect
  5. Manipulate left hand
  6. Vanish the ID on right sleeve

Do the trick and claim the ID. Now use the ID card on the scanner at the entrance to unlock another achievement.

Talk to the librarian on the lectern, head to the computers and read all the articles regarding styles. Ask the librarian on the missing article and head back to the house. Get to the kitchen and talk to Miss Dalton. Get down the cellar, inside the main lab and get the 2 letters. Now head to the file cabinet and put the files in the right place. Now get to N and take the neurobiological letter, L for the linkwell artcle, F for the fMRT and E for Extraordinal Forces. Now head for the Hospital and head to Susan's office. Upon handing in the papers requested, another achievement will unlock:

Talk to Susan and enter Headley's office. Talk to him, then again to her and try to perform on her the bottomless coffee cup trick. Buy the magnet in the store and perform the following things:

  3. Coffee cup to right hand
  4. Manipulate in right hand
  5. Misdirect
  6. Cabinet key in left hand
  7. Cabinet key in left sleeve

Now perform another trick on her, called the wound trick. Get to the shop again and get the thumb, stage blood and spirit gum. Head to the staff kitchen and hide the first aid kit there. Use the blood and glue on the thumb and perform the trick in the following order.

  1. Take letter opener in left hand
  2. Manipulate left hand
  3. Misdirect
  4. Manipulate left hand

Now open the file cabinet, copy the plan, leave the office and talk to Malik. Head back to the main offices and search the letters N, A, L and K. Crosscheck the condolence card and the phone register and tick off everyone except for Abram Linkweller and David Styles to unlock another achievement.

Now head back to Oxford to the Pub. Blow in the horn to the right and talk to the bartender to get the mouthpiece. Use it on the horn to get the next puzzle part and postcard. Get to the church, talk to the guide and get to the altar. Check the baptism pool, use the lever and open the pool to get a baggie containing the last piece. Combine them all now, head to the town centre and enter the following number in the phone booth (58327, the solution is judas). Grab the coin for another achievement.

Get to the dining room and check the CD´s from the 3rd from the top. Head to the private lab and choose dry, red, 1972 and loare on the wine. Pick the 94 wine in the cellar. Back to the lab, approach the console near the machine and use the CD, shampoo and enter the tank. Upon entering it, you will unlock the following achievement:

Talk to her until she runs out of options. This will unlock an achievement.

Head back to the magic shop and use the slot machine once more to hit 21. Get the reward and solve the anagram with Alice in Wonderland. get the map from London, examine the Cheshire cat and click the letters S M I L E. Head now to the university museum and check the glass door with the Dodo egg. Claim the egg, use it on the red bench to open it and get the things it contains. Return the egg, head to the library and ask the librarian about Hogwarts and head to Christ Church. Since the dining hall is closed, talk to Angela inside the main church. Head to the hospital inside Susan's office, ask her about Malik and get the phone number from the phone (save it in your mobile). Get to the magic shop and get the phone spy. Use the cell phone in the hallway of the hospital and call the neurobiology department with 11 in addition. Enter his now empty office and use the spy on his phone on the desk. Head back to St Edmunds' and get to the 2nd floor of the dorm to room 204. You will need the key from the Procter here and he will only give it to you if you win the Divide and Conquer game against him. Now the trick to win is to let him start when there is an even number of cards and you start on an uneven. Now choose the last card as "predicted" and choose each time another card until the "predicted" is the last one. Do this 3 times in a row and you get an achievement.

Enter Charles' room and get the photo from the frame. Head to the 3rd floor to enter room 302. Talk to the Monitor there and get to the shop for the cry for help noisemaker. Get some toilet paper while on floor 1 and use the cry for help on the door (wrapped in toilet paper). Use the remote to lure the monitor to open the door and examine it so it stays open. Now head inside, examine everything and head to room 102 on the first floor. Use the paint to climb inside, get the key and examine everything EXCEPT her bed. Do the bed after you're done with the rest. Now do the dialogue with Helena (don't forget to ask for the camera on the desk) and head back to the house to do some dialogue. Now head for St Edmunds' and do the fruitbowl trick to end the level and get an achievement.

Follow the kid that will take the flower and convince her to give the flower to you. Use the apple on the ground on her to convince her. Head again up the tower and use the flour on the stains of the window. Head to the hospital and talk to Linkweller. Head for the library, talk to Harvey and use the shredded and restored newspaper trick on him. Get the stack of papers on the counter of the librarian and do it in the following order.

  1. paper stack in left sleeve
  2. Harvey's paper in right hand
  3. paper stack in left hand
  4. Harvey's paper to left hand
  5. misdirect
  6. paper stack to right hand
  7. Harvey's paper in left sleeve
  8. manipulate paper stack in right hand

Initiate to convince him telling the truth. Head to St Edmure's hall, distract the guard and enter Helena's room. Check her drawer and find a letter. Search the desk for a hairpin and open the locked box from under the bed with it. Now head up to the 3rd floor, check the fuse box and head to cups near the handyman to perform the cups and ball trick. This is a little bit tricky. He has to tell you the cups he did move which don't have the ball inside. Here is a small example of what I mean:

  • 2 and 3 - Ball is in 1
  • 1 and 3 - went from 1 to 3
  • 2 and 3 - from 3 to 2
  • 1 and 2 - from 2 to 1
  • 1 and 2 - from 1 to 2

Upon finishing it, you get an achievement.

Ask him to either get some coffee or count to 100, switch off the alarm and enter the higher floor. Talk to Malik, enter room 322 and talk to Angela's roommate. Get to the magic shop and get the magic ink and lantern. Now head back to her and use the magic ink trick on her. Now check everything in the room and talk to jenny again. Head to the gardens of Christ Church, talk to Charles and after that, call his mother. Get to the lab and talk with David about your discoveries to get another achievement and don't forget the letter on the table near the phone!).

Head for the fireplace and check it. Check the right head's top twice, turn it thrice and get the jigsaw. Head now to the picture to the left. Check the Daedalus sign in the lower right corner, scratch the book of the girl with your knife a few times to find the last jigsaw. Complete the pieces and find the solution Christ Church Meadows. Head through the gardens, to the meadows and head up close to the water to find a rabbit hole. Crawl inside and enter the following number on the rabbit (539472277655) to get the next coin. Combine the coins you have with the city map and mark the following locations (St. Paul's Cathedral, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and British Museum). Join them through lines to find the club and get an achievement.

Chapter 8

Talk to the bartender for everything, the 2 clients and the trickster behind them. Check the newspaper next to the guests, get to the slots machine with the devil (left of entrance hall) and get 3 devils. Click the left horn until you hit the devil and hit the right one until the other 2 appear. Hit the lever as soon as you got the 3 devils and make it stop on the hell icon. Check the door in the back of the room, head to the painting and check the message left for you. Check the picture, head through the 3rd door on the right and observe the painting to the left. Open the iron maiden to the right for another clue and head through the door in the middle. Check the display case to the right, the picture and head through the first door to the left. Head back to the bar and talk to the trickster. If you did all the bonus points in my guide, the following achievement will unlock:

Fall again down the cellar, take the first door to the left, check the picture here and head through the fourth door on the left. Examine the big red button, use it, check the picture again and take the door in the back of the room. Now follow always the smallest alcove and claim after 7 times using the right path the orange key. Leave through any exit and follow now Helena's small figure. Talk to her (tell her to stand still), follow again, talk to her and you are alone in a new room. Head through the 2nd door on the left, check the painting and take the handcuffs. Head through the 2nd door on the right, 4th on the right, get through the middle door and use the handcuffs on the planks and get on the small island. Get the key, outside, through the first in the right and check the picture again. Head through the first on the left, use twice force on the Atlas statue and head through the 4th on the left, 2nd on the left and middle one. Take the key from the statue, get through the left door and the 3rd on the left. Use the 3 keys on the panel of the middle door and get an achievement.

Second Story playthrough

This playthrough will solely concentrate on playing quickly through the game, namely under 5 hours. I will write down the steps you have to do to breeze through the chapters. I will also note the times it took me as a reference.

chapter 1

Find rabbit at plant, search backpack for items, use carrot on cage, Watertank on watercan and on cage.

Check picture in staircase, diplomas and pictures in living room, plaque in front of the house and bike in garage. Talk to Mrs Dalton, take the new assistant envelope, get a cellphone from Mrs Dalton, place your parents' picture on the nightstand and get to the town centre.

Enter the magic shop, check the lower part for the Daedalus club sign, talk to Mephistopholes, hit 21 on the machine for the price, ask him, check the tower on the main streets plaque, climb the tower, behind the door use a match on the bottom of box, use paper with sign on sign plaque to the Christ Church college, examine box in fountain, use water on paper, open box for puzzle piece, flowers in garden with lion statue (middle batch), discover loose earth (to the bottom left) and get next clues.

Chapter 2

Check newspaper, talk on horseback track to Eddie, get to magic shop, talk to owner and take following items (paper noisemaker, false thumb, false blood, contact clue, magnet).

Talk with people at college, get to library, talk to Helena, comment on ID cards, manipulate paper shredder, do magic trick on her (destroyed/restored ring), enter library with ID card.

Talk to librarian, check computer articles, ask librarian about missing one, return home, talk with Mrs Dalton, head to main laboratory, take note from table, order the files, take fMRT file from file cabinet F, head to hospital to hand it in.

Talk to Susan to enter office, talk to the Dr, talk to Susan, perform magic trick (bottomless coffee cup), try to perform next trick on her (wound), check letter opener, enter staff only to hide first aid kit, perform trick on her, open file cabinet, copy documents, back to the lab check registers A, L, N and K, compare phone list with condolence card, tick every name off except for Abram Linkweller and David Styles.

Head to pub, use horn, talk to bartender, combine mouthpiece with horn, blow again, get next piece, head to Christ Church, open baptism pool for last piece, complete riddle, head to phone booth on main street, enter the right number and claim the gold piece. (finished with 55 minutes)

Chapter 3

Head to the garage, check the motorcycle and talk afterwards with Mrs Dalton in the kitchen.

Head to your private lab, take the parcel, check the whiteboard, check the computer for the files/videos and go back to your room to check the mirror.

Get the shampoo out of the bathroom, the swimsuit out of the drawer in the dressing room, the picture of the chateau out of the living room, the CD out of the dinner room, get to the private lab, check the Rolodex on the counter, check the 2 books, fine tune it, activate it, wait for the letters to appear (this might go faster if you constantly alternate between them).

Search for the wine on the computer, get it from the shelf, use the items on the machine, use the machine.

Head to the living room, take the last photo out of the box, use it on the scanner in your lab, change it on the computer, check the pinboard in the kitchen for the police officers card and call him. (finished with 1hr, 6minutes)

Chapter 4

Check the newspaper in the kitchen, head to St Edmures, show ID card to guard, check board behind him, get to pool hall, talk to pool man, check filter, check pool, check Polaroids, check clock and talk to jeanie in room 106.

Talk to students, head to magic shop, talk to owner, get flash trap, help me button and phone spy, get again 21 on the machine, get reward, get to gym, assemble trap, check opening hours and combine trap with both doors.

Head to Alice in Wonderland shop, get map of London, solve the Cheshire Cat riddle, head to History Museum, get dodo egg and open it to check its contents.

Head to Christ Church, talk to Angela in main room, head to hospital, talk to Susan, save the number of her phone on the mobile, use it to lure Linkweller out, implant phone spy, back to St Edmunds, get toilet paper in 1st floor, beat the guy sitting in the 2nd floor in Divide and Conquer, head inside Charles' room, check the magazine, the photo on the nightstand, save phone number, take photo, check room 302 on 3rd floor, talk to hall monitor, perform magic trick (closed room), combine toilet paper with help me, put it under door, use button, manipulate door, enter the room, check the textbook on the desk, read it, push the paint bucket in the 1st floor, enter Helena's room (key obtained), check camera on table, chck box underneath the bed, talk to Helena, head back to the house, talk with Dr Styles, back to St Edmures and perform fruit bowl magic trick. (chapter ends at 1hr 35mins)

Chapter 5

Head to the private lab, check the table with the Rolodex, check the whiteboard and head to Dr Rasumovski's place.

Head to the dinner room, check the paintings on the wall, head to the park, check tree on the right of the bridge to bring back a memory, head left to the playground, buy ice cream and lick it, head to gardenia to the right, try to pick flower, follow girl, talk to her, convince her with apple, smell on flower, head back to bridge, get across, ask accordion player to play a certain song and ask the guy in the rental booth to rent a boat.

Get back to private lab, check appointment book next to computer, got to kitchen, check pinboard for Dr Helborn's number, head there and reconstruct the happenings via hypnosis.

Head back home, talk to Mrs Dalton in kitchen, head to main lab in the back part, use computer, choose case 1, set right values and check the pictures. (Chapter ends at 1hr 51mins)

Chapter 6

Head to cellar, talk to Simmons, check the corridor leading to your bedroom (all items there), head to the tower next to the garage, get the key underneath the statue, get inside, check the threads on the stairs, check the chair upstairs, check the marks on the window and talk to Mrs Dalton about your discoveries.

Head to the hospital and talk to Linkweller, head to the library, talk to Harvey, get the papers on the counter of the librarian, use a magic trick on Harry (shredded paper), get to St Edmures hall, enter room 102, check drawer for the letter, check the theatre program on the desk, use the hairpin on the box underneath her bed, get up the 3rd floor, check the fuse box, get the cups and ball in front of room 302, use magic trick on handyman (cups and ball, tell him to get you some coffee), turn off the alarm, talk to Malik, head to the magic shop and buy invisible ink, head back to the 3rd floor, enter room 322, talk to the girl, perform magic trick on her (invisible ink), check the drawer, check the magazine and the student record, check the photos, the hair dye, talk to her again, head to the park in Christ Church, talk to Charles, call Charles' mother, head back to the house and talk to Savid in the laboratory about the girls.

Head for Christ Church dining hall, head to the fireplace, get the clue there, head to the pictures to the left, check the picture and get the clue there, assemble the puzzle, head to Christ Church meadows, find the rabbit hole, solve the rabbit riddle, get back home, claim the invitation to the Daedalus club, combine the coins with the map from London and find the Daedalus club.

Get to the magic shop and talk to the owner, head to the racetrack and get the disc after talking to Eddie, talk to Dr Styles, use the discus, call Helena for the changed time and get to St Edmures to talk to the other students. (chapter finished at 2hrs 23mins)

Chapter 7

Head to St Edmures, enter the dining room, talk to the detective, check the hole in the wall and compare it with the disc.

Leave the hall, talk to Angela, talk to the guard, talk to Mrs Dalton, check Sam's backpack, get the letter, check the left nightstand for the student ID and call the caseworker.

Get inside the private lab, check the Rolodex on the table, check file on computer (brain power report), print it, get to the main lab, use the computer, open the 3rd and 4th session, use the right values and compare them with the printout.

Get to St Edmures, head to the magic shop, get the poster, head back to St Edmures and talk to the detective to get the address, head to the club, show the poster to the guy in the entrance and enter the club. (chapter finished at 2hrs)

Chapter 8

Pick up the newspaper and talk to the barkeeper, then the couple, then the trickster, use the slot machine in the main hall to drop down, check the door in the middle of the room, check the box underneath the painting, open it to see a clue, take the 3rd door to the right, head through the door in the middle, push the button, check the picture to the right, get through the middle door, solve the riddle to claim the orange key, find Helena, talk to her, save her, take the 2nd door on the left, check the painting, take the handcuffs from the showcase in the middle, take the 2nd door to he right, take the 4th door on the right, get through the middle door (mythical statues), use the handcuffs on the planks, take the green key, get back and use the 1st on the right, check the painting, get back to the previous room, check the painting there, get to the statues and move the atlas statue, back to the previous room, take the 3rd on the right, get through the middle door, take the key from Atlas' belly, leave the room, take the 3rd door to the left, use now the 3 keys on the door and enter.

Check for Mephistpheles, head back to the previous room, take the 3rd to the right, get the weapon from the showcase, get back to him and use the gun on him.

Combine the lantern with the paper fairy, use it on Angela, use the lever to drop her in the pool, just watch the video and finish the credits. (chapter finished at 2hrs 55mins)

This will unlock the last achievement.
