Firstly, I would like to point out that my rating is not necessarily a reflection of the game 'Growtopia', but rather the Xbox One console version of the game.
A little backstory; Growtopia was first created in 2012 and released in 2013 for mobile and PC. It is essentially a mix of Terraria (a 2D Minecraft clone) and Farmville. In 2017, the rights to the game were purchased by gaming giant Ubisoft. Due to their footprint in the console gaming market, Ubisoft decided to release a console version of the game in 2019. In less than 6 months, Ubisoft made the decision to discontinue support for the recently added console versions. In less than a year, the decision was made to close the servers for these versions as well.
Needless to say, the console versions were a huge mistake. I am not sure why Ubisoft thought a mobile quality game that was nearly a decade old would be a hit on state-of-the-art home consoles. Furthermore, there was no reasonable way to integrate the servers together, so they ended up making 3 completely separate servers; the existing PC/mobile server, Xbox One plus Nintendo Switch server, and a PlayStation server.
Since the Xbox One console servers were separate (and new), players had to start from scratch. Since Growtopia is largely a community based game, players make progress by trading and purchasing goods from other players. If the game were integrated with the existing servers, there would have been thousands of players and hundreds of stores and trading posts to make solid progress. Instead, even at it's peak, there are only a couple hundred people on at any time and only a handful of shops available. By the time a reasonable working society was established, Ubisoft announced that there would be no new updates or continued support. Some dedicated players decided to stick it out following the news and continue to build their digital empire, only to find out on April 30th, 2020 (about 9 months from the game's release) that the servers would be shut down in July. It is important to note that the game exists SOLEY on the servers. There is no offline or single player modes. Once the servers close, the Xbox version will cease to exist.
For achievement hunters, this limited run makes earning achievements extremely challenging, and in a couple of cases impossible. The achievement list was ported from the mobile/PC version of the game. With exponentially more resources at your disposal and no constraint on time, it was still rare for some of these elusive achievements to be unlocked. With the Xbox version, the small time window and limited resources make the challenge virtually impossible (there are a couple of achievements that no one Xbox Live has managed to unlock since the game's release).
In addition to the administration issues, the game suffers from some playability issues. The game sometimes requires multiple attempts to log on. It is very common to experience network lag and get kicked out of your session. If there is server maintenance, you couldn't play. If Xbox Live was down, you couldn't play. If your internet went down, you couldn't play.
I would like to go into specific details about the gameplay, but it wouldn't be of much use since the game will be gone within 3 months of this posting. Just know it is a free to play, microtransaction heavy farming game. You can watch some videos and, if you think it looks interesting, there is still a healthy community on the PC and mobile version.
For all the fellow Xbox gamers on this site, if you are reading this before the game's closure, DO NOT START (unless you just particularly need to add it to your 'Games Played' list before it is too late).
I have never really had much issue with Ubisoft, but this entire debacle has left a bad taste in my mouth. I know it all comes down to business, but this type of game requires either spending real money on in-game content and/or grinding an unreasonable amount of time to progress. Either way, it is a slap in the face to every gamer who downloaded this game and contributed either of these ways.
