Gryphon Knight Epic is a retro-styled, side scrolling shooter for the Xbox One. Being a fan of retro-styled games and shooters I picked up this game based on screenshots alone. What I got was a very pleasant surprise.

I have played many, many games, but this is certainly one of the best I have played in recent years. It isn't perfect, but everything it tries to do, it does very well.

The graphics and soundtrack deliver a nostalgia feel from games of the early 90's. While there are many indie games on Xbox that utilize retro pixelated graphics, they can often come across looking corny or unauthentic. This game on the other hand had me feeling like I was a kid in an arcade again.

The story, while not super original, does a great job of telling an interesting and engaging tale while not overwhelming the player with distracting walls of text or cliche' filler storylines.

The difficulty, while adjustable, feels consistent and delivers a perfect balance of challenge without draining the fun out of the gameplay.

The level designs exhibit great visuals and a variety of colorful landscapes that make the stages intriguing and fun.

The enemies and bosses and well balanced and add loads of flavor to the gameplay. Each stage has a theme, and all the enemies fit in perfectly with the designs. The boss fights are often over-the-top and deliver a perfect combination of challenge and charm.

The game also offers a large array of abilities, items, weapons and upgrades that allow for the game to constantly evolve and keep the game fresh and fun.

All in all, I didn't really find anything in this game that I felt was lacking.

I give it a 4.5/5 and I would recommend this game to anyone. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
