7. Halo 3
HALO 3 Campaign Playthrough
Skulls & Terminals in Chronological Order:
Timestamps will as always be in imbedded URL format linking you to the specific part of this video they appear, in XX:YY format, within each mission.
Mission 1: Sierra 117
For Blind, you’ll approach the cliff ledge before turning left to continue the level. Before heading left, look down over the cliff ledge toward the water and to your right and you should see this skull. In the collectibles this begins at 00:07.
Missing Link Egg - On the waterfront where the Phantoms drop off ships before you head into sniper alley, look across the waterway to the edge of the cliff on the right-hand side of it (this is the cliff that has the Jackal snipers on Legendary). You can just make out a monkey sitting in a tree. This one is in the video of all 3 monkey easter eggs down below the Haplorrhini achievement.
Primate Egg - A family of monkeys: On Sierra 117, you can find a family of monkeys. In the area in the woods after you see the Pelican get shot down and there are lots of Jackal snipers about, kill off all the snipers and hug the left zone wall along the cliff face. There’s a small ledge higher up you can climb up to about half way down the canyon, and on this ledge is the family of ‘monkeys’, one of whom is holding a teddy bear. CREAPY looking little buggers. Check the video below the Haplorrhini achievement for both of these easter eggs.
Halo 3: Find your first missing links.
Skull (Iron) - In the last area of the level where a big fight takes place, look to the far side from where you enter on the cliff ledge. The building to the far back left corner has the skull sitting on the ledge up top. Make your way over there and climb up, following the building’s ledge around to the skull. Check the video at 00:21 for this one.
Haplorrhini Egg - The lone monkey: Another monkey can be found in Sierra 117, this time near the end where you rescue the Marines. When you enter the area, look for a tall building to the right with glass windows on the upper floor. Climb into the upper floor of this building and look to the cliff ledge on the far side of the map, on the far right-hand end of it. Zoom in with your binoculars to see a single monkey man sitting on the ledge and unlock this achievement. The video below shows Missing Link, Primate, and this achievement.
At Mission completion:
Mission 2: Crow's Nest
Can't Keep Him Down (Chips Dubbo round 3) - This unlocks right nearly at the start of Crow's Nest on Halo 3. It's practically unmissable. You'll open a door after being told to get to the hangar and hear a funny accented guy say 'following sir' and the achievement unlocks.
Skull (Black Eye) In the room where you meet up with some Marines and an objective pops up at the bottom “Secure Perimeter Defenses”, use the shelves and scaffolding to climb up onto the pipe at the top of the room to find this skull. Its location is shown from 00:51 in the collectibles video.
Skull (Grunt Birthday) In the ventilation shaft where you meet some of the flying enemies and drop down to a lower area, before dropping down inch up to the edge of the drop and look over. You’re going to want to drop over the ledge and immediately pull back on the left thumb stick as you fall so that you land in another shaft just below you about half way down. The skull is at the end of this shaft. Start at 01:05 in the video for this.
Unmissable mission completion unlock:
Halo 3: Complete Crow's Nest.
Mission 3: Tsavo Highway
Oh boy. What do these guys have against vehicles. Once again (and yet again later on in Halo 3) we must trudge through an entire large level without using a vehicle of any kind. I’m sure even super soldiers start to get athlete’s foot after this much time hoofing it don’t they? It’s pretty painful at times not using vehicles on Legendary, so you may want to do another run-through on Easy to knock this out, but so much the better if you can take care of it during your initial run on Legendary. Turrets count as vehicles too, so make sure you don’t enter any of them.
Skull (Tough Luck) At the portion where you have to get off your vehicle because there’s a gap in the highway and a ladder up to the next area with the Wraith and loads of enemies, before you reach that gap in the road look down over the left-hand side. Down below are some supports you can jump down to. Go to the first one (furthest from the gap in the road) and make your way around the pillar on it to the other end, where you can see the skull off to your left across a small gap. This one starts at 01:24 in the video.
Mind the Gap - This achievement requires you to get 4 vehicles, ANY 4 vehicles, across the afore-mentioned gap in the bridge.... on Legendary.... with Cowbell, Catch, Thunderstorm, Mythic, and Tough Luck skulls active. It can be done solo or in co-op, but obviously co-op will make it much easier as you have friends to drive the vehicles through the level with you and you don't have to restart the last checkpoint if you die. In the absence of friends, you could use a second controller as a spawn point to save some hassle. There are at least 4 Warthogs, one troop transport, and several Brute Choppers in the first portion of the level before the gap in the bridge. I prefer to bring 3 hogs and the troop transport as it's easier to get these through the concrete block gap than to get choppers through it. The video below shows this achievement in action, starting at the beginning of the bridge.
Mind the Gap
Halo 3: 4 vehicles, 1 gap on Legendary using Cowbell, Catch, Thunderstorm, Mythic, and Tough Luck.
And at mission completion:
Mission 4: The Storm
Skull (Catch) In the part where you come out into an open area to fight anti-air Wraiths, do not damage any Wraiths. Simply drive out and go past the central wall. On the other side you’ll see a short, round raised structure. You need to jump onto your vehicle to jump up onto it, where you’ll find the skull resting. This one starts at 01:55 in the video.
At mission completion:
Mission 5: Floodgate
Skull (Fog) This is one of the trickiest skulls to get. At the beginning of this mission, you’ll come down to the bottom of the hill and enter some streets/buildings. When you very first reach the streets and start to walk up a ramp, a flood enemy will show up high above on a roof to your right and jump across, carrying the skull. He never comes down, so you have to shoot him just as he starts to leap. Too early and the skull drops on the right building, too late and it flies across to the left one. The video will be especially beneficial for this one, starting at 02:22.
Milk Carton Egg (not actually a milk carton) Right at the start of the mission you'll go down a hill and enter an area with buildings to the left and right. This is the same location as the skull above. As you turn the first corner, look in the alcove to your right on the ground for the poster. Shoot it to unlock the achievement.
Another mission completion achievement:
Mission 6: The Ark
Time for our next two-step… or two-thousand steps, as it were. Foxtrot your way through this level on Legendary without entering any vehicles or turrets to knock out an additional achievement upon level completion. To make your life easier you can do this with a co-op buddy, but unfortunately it has to be done on Legendary. I did this with the 2nd controller method because I didn't wanna ask anyone to suffer through this way lol.
Who Needs Them?
Halo 3: On The Ark, complete the level without entering a vehicle on Legendary.
Terminal 1: After the initial fight with hunters, grunts, and a brute, head inside the structure. Instead of going in the door straight ahead, take a left into one of the two doors into a small semi-circular hallway where you’ll find the terminal on your left. In the collectibles video this one starts at 2:38.
Skull (Famine) This one’s extremely difficult to describe. It’s at the end of the upper portion of one of the supports to the central brown/gold platform between the two large areas of fighting. It’s the only platform in the level that doesn’t have any fighting ON it, but rather just a couple of ghosts that show up BELOW it. Check the video starting at 03:20 for this one, as it’s much easier to see than to read its location.
Terminal 2: After activating the light bridge inside the structure, turn around 180 degrees and you’ll find the terminal directly behind you. In the video above, this one starts at 03:50.
Terminal 3 & Cowbell Skull: At the spot where you fight the Scarab, look for a small structure in the field. Head in here and get a gravity lift equipment. Now head inside the large building, and you’ll come to a small room with a ramp leading down to your left. Drop down and head through the door underneath this ramp to find the terminal. Shortly after this, you'll reach a room with a large glowing pipe in the center, and when you exit it you'll be on a long ramp leading down. The skull is in an alcove way up by the ceiling at the bottom of this ramp. Use the gravity lift near the bottom of the ramp to launch up to the top-most alcove and get the skull. These two start at 04:04 in the collectibles video.
Halo 3: Complete The Ark.
Mission 7: The Covenant
Terminal 4: In the very first building you enter, shoot the enemies in front and jump onto the two stacked purplish-red boxes at the front of the hallway to your left. From them crouch-jump up onto the upper platform in front of you. The terminal will be on your left here. This one starts at 04:45.
For Phantom Hunter, during the Hornet flying portion you'll come across a purple enemy Phantom. Kill this and reload the checkpoint a couple times to finish off two more for the achievement, although this isn't really necessary unless you're impatient because you'll be revisiting this level a few times for the completion. There's only the one Phantom in the entire level.
Thunderstorm Skull & Terminal 5: When you get into the Hornet, you'll encounter a the Phantom mentioned above hovering above an island with an anti-air Wraith on it. To the right, there is a tower structure that you do not enter. On the high ledge sticking out from it is the skull, and down the ramp leading inside, to the left around the corner, is the terminal. These start at 05:06 in the collectibles video.
Halo 3: Activate Terminal 5 on The Covenant.
Terminal 6: Continue on from Terminal 5. When you enter the 3rd tower to take down the barrier and fight two hunters, the terminal is on the 2nd floor on the right-hand side from where you first enter. This one is similar in location to Terminal 4 but on the opposite side of the elevator, and starts at 05:47 in the video.
Dirge of Magrigal Egg: You can find this egg rather easily. Near the very end of the level, when you’re approaching the large tripod-like structure after the fight with the scarabs (shortly after finishing Phantom Hunter above), you can fly up onto a thin grey ledge midway up on the left side. Land your Hornet here and follow the ledge around to the left as it slopes upwards higher up the structure. At the very top of this ledge, where you can’t go any higher on foot, you’ll hear the Madrigal score kick in and the achievement should unlock. A visual showcase for those that prefer:
Skull (IWHBYD) - Inside the structure mentioned above, you have to play the Halo theme using the holographic rings near the end of the level. You’ll reach a room with these holographic rings and lots of Brutes enemies. Clear the room of enemies and activate the bridge at the far end, then kill off all the Flood that show up. When it’s time to head out, go all the way back to where you entered but do NOT drop down the shaft. Instead, turn back around. From here, the nearest ring is #1 and the furthest is #7. Jump through the rings in the following order: 4654534. This spawns the skull at the small light-bridge at the far end of the room past ring #7. Check the video starting at 06:09 for a visual example.
And after all that, completing the mission nets you:
Mission 8: Cortana
Skull (Tilt) In the central room with a somewhat-circular layout, and the fungus-looking stuff growing on the walls, use the fungi platforms to climb up to the top of the room in the center, where this skull is cleverly hidden. Fast forward to 07:16 in the video for this one.
This is a misleading achievement. There are only 7 ‘terminals’ in Halo 3 (at least in regards to the cumulative 'all terminals' achievement). This one is a special one and is located below the floor in the room mentioned above where the Tilt skull is located. From where you enter (facing toward the exit), turn 90 degrees to your right and head down the ramp, then down another ramp leading underneath the central area to find this terminal. Start at 07:50 in the video for this one.
And at mission completion:
Mission 9: Halo
Skull (Mythic) At the start of the level, as you’re headed down the snow-covered slop, there is another small opening off to your right (similar to Terminal 7 below but smaller and before that one). Just hug the right wall as you make your way forward toward the big drop down and you shouldn’t miss it. The skull sits at the end of this little off-shoot. Start the video at 08:08 for this one.
Terminal 7: From the above skull, continue down the hill and look for a tunnel off to your right before dropping down. Turn left at the end of this tunnel to find the terminal. This one starts at 08:20.
If you've accessed all 7 terminals and waited at the final screen on each one until it shifts and shows additional information (which you had to in order to unlock the achievements anyway), doing so on this last one a 2nd time on Legendary difficulty will eventually carry on like the others, panning across some digital nonsense and eventually revealing a secret message from Mendicant Bias about his/its desire for atonement. This unlocks your last Halo 3 terminals achievement.
Heading to his Destiny - In this same tunnel, directly across from Terminal 7, there is a large gap with a beam on the other side that you can't reach even with grenade jumping. Start the mission in co-op and have your partner stand on the ledge. Stand on his head, and have him jump toward the far side. Jump off his head midway across the gap and you'll make it to that ledge. Now look for an alcove to your left and a half-naked guy dancing in the corner. Do a 'late jump' off the ledge you're on to get into the alcove. The reason is there's an overhang that you'll bounce off of if you don't. A late jump is where you just start to fall off the ledge, and when your screen dips you jump. Head over and look at the half-naked guy for the achievement.
Cool Story Egg - the final Grunt: In the final level of Halo 3, as you’re escaping on the Warthog and the platform is falling out from underneath you, look for the spot where you're on the final approach to the Frigate. You should see the ship in front of you and a rock arch over the falling platform. Park the Warthog by the arch and go along the small ledge to the right on the other side of the arch to find a lone grunt and get this achievement.
Finally at mission completion you'll get:
If playing on Legendary the whole way, these four will unlock:
Halo 3: Complete every level of the game on Easy difficulty.
Halo 3: Complete every level of the game on Normal difficulty.
Par Time Runs
You know the drill. Difficulty set to easy, speed run through the levels. I definitely wouldn’t advise going for the two ‘no vehicles used’ achievements while doing this. But hey, who am I to tell you no? Once again as with the other three titles, there's an achievement for speed running Legendary, so if you're going to go for that don't bother doing the Par Times on Easy, because you'll get most, if not all, of them in the course of the Legendary campaign speed run. Disregard the #'s on the bottom-left of the video tiles below. For Halo 3, ODST, and 4, you'll find it easiest to do the Legendary speed run in 3- or 4-player co-op. In fact, it is incredibly easy that way, so I wouldn't advise doing it any other way. For reference though, you can once again check out Nak3d Eli's playlist of all five titles in TMCC HERE where he shows you how to do the Legendary speed runs solo.
Halo 3: Beat the par time on Crow's Nest.
Halo 3: Beat the par time on Floodgate.
Halo 3: Beat the par time on The Ark.
Halo 3: Beat the par time on all Halo 3 levels.
And if you manage do do all this speed running on Legendary, you'll net the 3-hr achievement.
Halo 3: Complete all Halo 3 Legendary campaign missions in under 3 hours.
Par Score Runs
Once again, these have been made easier since launch. Still, keep in mind that you need to move quickly too as your level completion time has a large effect on your score multiplier (see the hints/tips section for more info). For my Halo 3 Par Scores, I did almost every level on Heroic with Fog, Famine, Tough Luck, Tilt, and Thunderstorm on and it worked just fine. With the easier requirements now you'll probably only need 2 or 3 of those, if even that. I think I did Sierra 117 on Normal with another skull or two, but it probably could've been done the Heroic way as well. The new score requirements are as follows:
Sierra 117 - 13,000, Crow’s Nest – 19,000, Tvaso Highway – 21,000, The Storm – 15,000, Floodgate – 25,000, The Ark – 25,000, The Covenant – 25,000, Cortana – 17,000, Halo – 24,000
Halo 3: Beat the par score on Sierra 117.
Halo 3: Beat the par score on Tsavo Highway.
Halo 3: Beat the par score on The Storm.
Halo 3: Beat the par score on The Ark.
Halo 3: Beat the par score on The Covenant.
Halo 3: Beat the par score on Cortana.
Halo 3 LASO Playlist - Black Eye, Blind, Catch, Cowbell, Famine, Fog, Grunt Birthday Party, Iron, IWHBYD, Mythic, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Tough Luck
There is a playlist made for all missions that can be found here: Z Swartzenegger's LASO Playlist.
Our 3rd homage to the game’s release date, Halo 3’s requires you to play a match or mission on the 25th of the month. That’ll do pig.
Of course, the now-ubiquitous playlist achievements, just jump into three different playlists in Halo 3 and complete them for this achievement duo.
Halo 3: Complete three Halo 3 playlists.
For Man on the Moon, load Standoff in Team Snipers. Zoom in on the moon and you’ll see a developer’s face and unlock the achievement. It's on the bottom right hand quadrant of the moon, very hard to see unless you're in theater mode and can fly out closer.
Hippo Hero - On the map Foundry (forge map) there’s a small junk pile on the map with skid marks nearby. Zoom in on the junk on the left-hand side when standing on the side that the skid marks are located to see a very small hippo buried in the junk. If you're having trouble finding the right pile, look for a large truck under a bridge. Nearby, about 20 paces away, is a Brute Spiker weapon by a box and a pile of junk. This is the pile you're looking for.
Halo 3: Who DARED to discard this brave animal?
Sounds Familiar - For this one, load up High Grounds in multiplayer and head into the building where the desk with the UNSC laptop briefcase is located. Underneath the desk is a radio that will start playing Under Cover of Night from Halo:CE if you wait a minute or two. This one is similar to the Siege of Ivory Tower one in Halo 2.
Elder Signs - Similar to the beach sign on Zanzibar in Halo 2, this easter egg requires playing Valhalla in Halo 3 on different days. When done, different signs/sigils will appear in white paint on the grey/silver wall on the side of the map.
Halo 3: View 2 different sigils on Valhalla.
A video showing all the above three multiplayer map achievements. The Valhalla one just shows the location, and the dates to trigger the various graffiti images are Jan 1st, Apr 22nd, May 5th, July 4th, July 7th, Oct 31st, Nov 11th, and Dec 25th.
For these next achievements, you just need to play on 8 different maps, and play four unique game in H3 multiplayer. Just go into customs and start a game on a map then end the game as soon as it starts. Do this for 4 modes and 8 different maps to unlock the
Halo 3: Complete a match on at least 8 different multiplayer maps.
Halo 3: Complete a match on at least 4 different game types in multiplayer.
Halo 3 had skulls placed in the Mythic map pack maps. You can simply go into forge to find these, flying around in forge mode and just switch to your spartan right near the skull, holding 'X' or whatever your pickup button is as you drop past it/land near it/etc. I play bumper jumper so for me the 'pickup' button is B. A video is coming soon. Of note: One map requires a gravity lift to get the skull as you can't switch from forge mode to spartan near enough to the skull. IIRC it's Citadel. Also, for Sandbox don't worry about any of the weird tunnel/teleporter strats. The skull is against the zone wall behind red base. Just go to red base and place a Trip Mine spawn with the settings set to make it instantly respawn. Switch to your spartan and stand on the spawn. Keep throwing trip mines into a pile (don't move your camera or they might explode). Eventually map items will begin disappearing. When this happens, the 'guardians' are disabled, allowing you to simply walk out to the zone wall and grab the skull.
Halo 3: Find the hidden Skull on the Assembly multiplayer map.
Halo 3: Find the hidden Skull on the Orbital multiplayer map.
Halo 3: Find the hidden Skull on the Citadel multiplayer map.
Halo 3: Find the hidden Skull on the Heretic multiplayer map.
Halo 3: Find the hidden Skull on the Longshore multilayer map.
Halo 3: Find the hidden Skull on the Sandbox multiplayer map.
Halo 3: Find all the hidden multiplayer Skulls.
Flipyap Egg - You killed Flipyap! - Make sure to activate the IWHBYD skull as you play through the campaign. Sooner or later (probably sooner) one of the grunts will yell 'You killed Flipyap!" and start going on about him. This can happen in any level, which is why I've placed it here. I've unlocked it on Sierra 117, Tsavo Highway, and The Covenant levels on different gamertags. The video I originally made said it had to be on The Covenant on Legendary, but this isn't true. I'm leaving the video here for now so you can hear the dialogue itself.
Halo 3: Listen to the tale of a young Grunt named Flipyap.
A semi-renamed repeat of the Vidmaster Challenge: Annual achievement in Halo 3, this one requires you to complete the final level of the game, Halo, on 4-player Legendary with the Iron skull turned on. Fortunately in co-op Iron only restarts you at the last checkpoint, not the level start. When you come out of the tower near the end before the escape sequence starts, instead of turning right along the cliff wall to head to the Warthog, jump down over the ledge to your left and there will be four ghosts parked under the ramp. Finish out the escape sequence with all four players in their ghosts for this one. I’m leaving this 4-player one here rather than in the level-specific portion due to the 4-player requirement. A visual guide for those that prefer it (updated much higher quality video):
Halo 3: Complete Halo on 4-player Legendary co-op, with Iron Skull, and everyone in Ghosts.
