Microsoft, seeing Nintendo and their Wii selling like hotcakes and wishing to cash in on some of that, have really been pushing their console to the casual market. A price point that so deliciously sweet, avatars and a whole array of different genres of games to cover all it's basis, its not hard to understand why Lips has been released. Add the fact that the music games genre is flying high at the moment, with Guitar Hero being on the tip of the tongue of many and its obvious Lips should be on to a winner.

Lips is a copy of Singstar. There isn't much ground to begin denying this. Sure, there may be different game play elements, but essentially it's the karaoke game that most PlayStation owners own. However, this should not be a reason not to try the game.

Secondly, Lips is fun. Have a few friends over and belt out a song... or five. Sure, alcohol may be necessary for some of the shy types, but the fun will only escalate...especially when Avril Lavene's Complicated gets selected! toast The game comes with two wireless microphones that are stunning with its LED lights that flash to the beat or in tie with your tambourining! Which bring me to another cool element. The Microphones are motion sensitive, which allows you to tap it with your hand to the beat when not singing, or if you're really talented, at the same time! music

Lips gameplay is simple. Song starts, lyrics appear, you try to sing, song finishes, your final point tally shows. Hoorah's all round! That's the basic idea, derr. Available are Vs. or Co-op modes and some other mini-games like Beat the Bomb and a Kissing game. Other touches that developer iNiS have added is the "Star Steam" which like Guitar Hero's "Star Power", give you extra points. To trigger Star Stream, you need to sing well or wiggle your microphone (or both) to fill up a bar. Once said bar is filled, you will be shown a silhouette of a certain pose that you must copy. This adds fun to the game as it adds a level of body language by making you raise your hands in the air or sing your microphone round in the air above your head like you were swinging a lasso. Funny.laugh

The music that is on the disc is great. It covers all music tastes from Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John, Take on Me by a-ha, and Bust a Move by Young MC. You can also add music from your own collection, though no lyrics will appear. It seems to score you on how well you can sound like the music track, so have some fun trying to mouth the guitar solos. Downloadable content is also supported, and Microsoft have really delivered here. Each week since release, at least 3 new songs have been made available for purchase via Xbox Live Marketplace. This has pushed the number of songs available for your Lips library to well over 70 tracks. clap

There is some kind of Live Multiplayer. But its not as spectacular as you are imagining. Basically you challenge a friend to a song, then when they accept to sing that song and you lodge your score. You have two attempts to out sing your "friend". I guess a good thing is that you can challenge Silver Xbox Live members, no need for Gold.

To conclude, Lips is fun. It's a karaoke game that doesn't really differentiate itself from the pack, but it doesn't do a bad job at blending into the rest of the genre either.

(On the achievement side, this game has pretty easy gamerscore!)

ERIKDOTCOMIs it like Rock Band, you just get the pitch right, you don't necessarily have to get the lyrics right?

After receiving my copy of Lips Number 1 Hits in the post, I just couldn’t wait to get home and start singing…. Ok I sound like a cat being swung round someone’s head, but Lips isn’t about being good. Its about having a laugh and most importantly, how much of a fool you can make of yourself singing one of your favourite songs.

Lips No 1 Hits is a true party game and to tell the truth if you have the first lips it is more of an expansion on that. But don’t let that put you off as it is well worth getting, you are supplied with about 32 new tracks and you have access to all the songs you have downloaded so far for the first Lips. Now some of the default songs on the first lips will not come over due to license issue, but on main they are all there!

The whole set up is vastly improved from the previous lips, the menus are more user friendly and you get little pointers as you navigate the menus. There is a nifty feature where all of your downloaded songs (and by that I mean ones you have copied from CD’s to your hard drive). Are in one section now instead of cluttering up your playlist. But as with the previous instalment of Lips you aren’t supplied with words to sing along to. But I’m sure you already know them….. Don’t you!

Now the competitive singers among us (My wife especially) will like the new trophy feature and the position count down. As you sing through a song your are shown your position in the world and what colour trophy you are on course to winning. Obviously the better you do the higher the position and you gets cups from Bronze to Platinum. Now the updated position is only available if you are connected to Xbox Live and only on the new tracks on Lips Number 1 Hits.

Now this is the first game I have played that has Unlockable items for your avatar. I won’t ruin it for you and tell you what I have got so far, but there are ten to unlock. There are also 9 new achievements worth 250 GS points and all are easy to get, although some will require some great singing!!

Now all the same modes are here and as in the previous Lips, but everything is that little bit smoother and more aesthetically pleasing! The introduction of your avatar to the proceeding adds that little bit more personalisation to the game, which in my opinion is welcome. There is also a duet mode now, which for the soppy ones among us will be a welcome improvement on the co-op feature of last year. As you actually sing separate parts of the songs. So you romantic ones can sing a song wit the missus, without ruining here bits with your free styling.

As with most sequels, there are certain area’s which people want building on, content, improved playing and the extra fun factor. Now this game meets them all with ease. Although not technically a sequel it is still a must buy.

Listed below are the new tracks available.

    "Don't Matter" – Akon
"The Tide is High (Get the Feeling)" - Atomic Kitten
    "Loser" - Beck (U.S.)
    "Heart of Glass" - Blondie
    "Love Generation" - Bob Sinclar
"Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin
    "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat

    "Hey Baby" - DJ Ötzi
    "More Than Words" – Extreme
"Big Girls Don't Cry" – Fergie
"She Drives Me Crazy" - Fine Young Cannibals
"Broken Strings" - James Morrison feat. Nelly Furtado
"Around the Way Girl" - LL Cool J
"How You Remind Me" – Nickelback
    "Millennium" - Robbie Williams
    "The Look" – Roxette
"I Get Around" - The Beach Boys
    "Lovefool" - The Cardigans
“California Love” - 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman
    “Barbie Girl” - Aqua
“Just Dance” - Lady Gaga feat. Colby O’Donis
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” - Tears for Fears
    “The Fear” - Lily Allen
“Don’t Phunk With My Heart” - Black Eyed Peas
“I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’” - Scissor Sisters
    “Heartless” - Kanye West

“Hey There Delilah” - Plain White T’s
“Always On My Mind” - Pet Shop Boys
    “I’m Yours” - Jason Mraz
    “Push the Button” – Sugababes

Finally all I can say is that I love this game and would recommend everyone to go the shop now and buy it. It is perfect for a party and even if you want to have a sing on your own, there are songs for everyone and with loads of DLC you should be able to find a few songs you can sing!

    Thanks for reading
