I strongly advise only taking note of the missable achievements below, and using the walkthrough as a last resort. It's that much better when enjoyed at your own pace!
Machinarium is a point 'n' click adventure game, and controls as such:
moves the cursor around the screen
selects whatever is under the cursor
has a unique function: makes Josef stretch upwards, and allows him to squish downwards.
You'll need to use the right stick at times to be able to reach the things you need to interact with, but sometimes Josef will do so automatically. If you can't seem to interact or move somewhere, try adjusting him manually.
Another pretty cool feature allows you to get some backstory to the game. Leave Josef idle for a while on certain screens, and he'll have a thought bubble pop up which shows parts of how he ended up separated from his girlfriend Berta, in a scrapheap outside the city.
SPOILER FREE MISSABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
Thankfully, there are only a handful of missables which I'll outline here, without trying to spoil too much. I will place reminders in the walkthrough, so if you're skipping this page and not reading this... Well, I'm wasting my time, then, aren't I?
You'll unlock this missable achievement first if you follow the walkthrough. At one point, you'll find yourself playing an expanded version of tic-tac-toe (noughts and crosses) with an NPC. You must WIN five games to get this (the first win is required for the story). Simply keep going back and playing until the achievement pops on the fifth win.
For this one, you'll reach a screen with a clock tower. Around the tower are several pieces of paper with pictorial codes on them relating to the setting of the clock. You'll need to set the clock to the piece of paper marked by the MOON symbol, which will cause an NPC to appear above. (Story can be progressed without using this puzzle, although unlikely)
At one point during the story, you'll need to beat two arcade machines. One of them is similar to classic Space Invaders. You only need to beat it once to progress the story - go back and play it another couple of times to shoot down a total of 500 aliens and unlock this achievement. (It unlocks whilst playing)
During the plot, you'll find yourself in a greenhouse, and have to grow several plants to maturity to progress. Make sure you grow all four plants from the pots on the floor (only two are required for progression)
That's all there is! So, if you want to play blind (and you should), you now have everything you need to do so.
Again, if you are following the walkthrough, I'll point these out in the guide so you won't miss them!
So, on the with the game!
