6. Story - Hardcore & Old School
In the following part, we will complete the story 2 more times before we head to Arcade Mode. Right now, you can choose to start on Hardcore or Old School Difficulty.
- In Hardcore, you will have Last Man Standing. The bad part, if you get hit by 2 shots from a pistol, you will die, you will have to kill the enemy who downed you to survive. Basically, you can't be too aggressive. You also have to plan your course of action very carefully before you perform it, and you only have a minimal amount Bullet Time effect & reward. (A few seconds will empty a fully charged Bullet Time bar)
- In Old School, the damage you receive is in between what you would receive on Medium and Hard difficulty (same with the Bullet Time effect), the only bad thing is that you won't have Last Man Standing to save you if you die. On this difficulty, it is a good idea to train yourself to use the Painkiller manually.
Choose the difficulty you want to start with. Remember to choose it from Story -> New -> Hardcore / Old School -> Free Aim.
* If you do it from Chapter Select, you will not unlock the achievement.
Use the Single player tips from the General hints and tips page to help you, these will help if you're having difficulty in a specific part.
For both playthroughs, if you're looking for a Painkiller on a specific chapter, feel free to watch the video below:
I will talk about the Old School difficulty first since this is easier. In the Hardcore difficulty walkthrough, I will include a sample video, as well as a text guide to show you the difficult parts along with how to complete them.
Playthrough 2/3 - Old School (Free Aim)
Remember, you have to start a New Game and choose Free Aim, otherwise you can't unlock the achievement.
On this difficulty, the damage you receive will be between what you would take in Medium and Hard, same with the Bullet Time effect. Be careful as you won't have Last Man Standing to save you if you lose all of your health (This means you will die instantly), you'll then have to restart from the previous checkpoint. If you choose to start with this difficulty, I hope you will learn the following thing while you are playing.
- Enemy Positions and the number of them (weapons might be important)
This can help you prepare for the remaining playthrough, you want to know how many enemies will be at a checkpoint, and where are they appear (Of course they could say something to let you know their position if they are taking cover).
No doubt this is important, always search the area to find it, since on this difficulty you won't have Last Man Standing to save you, you have to train yourself to use Painkiller manually (The best timing to use it, is when you have about half health). If you learn this, it will help you a lot when you are playing New York Minute, or New York Minute Hardcore. Especially on New York Minute Hardcore as you don't want to suddenly get shot and die, since you have to restart from Chapter 1 (The beginning of the game)!
You can use the video above to find all of the Painkillers on a specific chapter.
- Bullet Time
You will need to use a lot of Bullet Time to complete the game, especially when a lot of enemies in the area. You will gradually learn the best timing to use it (Some of the Single Player tips, could help if you want to have more Bullet Time to kill the enemies as quickly as you can, and in a "safer" way).
- Dual Wield or not to Dual Wield
You can Dual Wield any one-handed weapon to help you kill enemies faster, the only bad thing is that you will use up a ammo a bit faster. Since you have collected all of the golden gun parts for every single gun, in this playthrough you will find that some of the weapons will kill the enemies with more ease than before, while most of the weapons will have extra ammo in a single clip.
Complete the story, and blow up the plane again to unlock "Maximum Payne" achievement.
We will move on to complete another story run, and this time we will complete the hardest difficulty (Hardcore) in this game.
Playthrough 2/3 - Hardcore (Free Aim)
Remember to start a New Game and choose Free Aim, otherwise you can't unlock the "Payne in the ass" achievement.
This is the hardest difficulty in Max Payne 3, you have minimal health and Bullet Time effect. A fully charged Bullet Time can run out within few seconds, so try your best to avoid using it all in a single use, unless you are in pretty bad situation.
You will want to avoid getting hit (Even one hit!), normally 2 shots from a pistol can kill you. Luckily, you'll still have Last Man Standing to save you. On this difficulty, I suggest you don't take a Painkiller every time you get shot, only use it in Last Man Standing, since a single shot from a pistol can give you take than half of your health. Avoiding getting hit is the key to surviving in this difficulty.
I will provide a video walkthrough for every chapter (The situation will be different for everyone!) below, this is to show you how to get past some of the difficult parts in a "safer" way. I will also list out the difficult parts below the video (Most of them will also be included in the video, if you prefer to watch videos), and give you some tips on how to get past those parts.
* If there is a location that you can come back to (more than a single checkpoint), remember to use the "Reload Checkpoint" function wisely, as you can grab extra Painkillers.
At last, good luck to everyone trying this difficulty!
Chapter I - Something Rotten In the Air &
Chapter II - Nothing but the Second Best
Chapter I - 0:26
Chapter II - 4:18
Chapter 1 shouldn't be too difficult, try to use cover as much as possible to help you get through it.
Chapter 2 Difficult Part:
I believe most of the players will have a hard time, especially on the Helicopter part. I had to replay this part few times to get to the Final battle.
- Helicopter Shootout (Checkpoints 7-13)
1st Helicopter Pad Fight: This part is pretty tough, I died at least once at this point. I don't have any good tips for this part, just hope that you don't get shot when you use Bullet Time to kill them, and remember to kill the enemies that are closest to you first. (You will have a fully charged Bullet Time bar by the next checkpoint)
The part where Giovanna gets stuck on the door: This is easier but you still have a chance to get shot, kill the enemies that are on higher ground, then kill the one on far left. Now kill the last enemy that is getting close to Giovanna, after that kill the remaining enemies.
- Rooftop Shootout (Checkpoint 14)
After getting down to the Helicopter Pad again, you will find that you lost almost all/all of your Painkillers (If you're lucky enough, you will have 1 Painkiller left). You need to find some Painkillers by yourself. On this checkpoint, you only can find 2 extra Painkillers, so use cover and Blind-fire to help, make sure to always look at both sides of the piece of cover, I nearly got killed by not looking at both sides at this part.
Chapter III - Just Another Day At The Office
- Audience Seat (Checkpoints 9-10)
I did find this part harder on Hardcore difficulty. If you're trying to complete it without getting shot, it can be very difficult. Especially the part after you get through the gate, a lot of enemies are in front of you and some more are at the bottom of the stairs (They can flank you from there). Another bad thing, is they could throw a grenade, this will force you to leave cover if you are in cover.
Cover somehow isn't really useful here, Shootdodge could be the better option. I did try to Shootdodge all the way to the end to complete this part. Out of the few attempts I had, I had at least one time where I didn't get shot a single time. Plan your actions carefully, as you can lost few Painkillers on this checkpoint!
- VIP Lounge
Another difficult part that has lots of enemies, these guys could throw grenades at you to force you out of cover.
Although you will take cover on a pillar at the beginning of this checkpoint, there are lots of enemies in front of you. If you alert them, they will try to come from both sides of the pillar to kill you. They can throw grenades too, so be careful of that.
I don't have any good tips for this part. If you are lucky enough that nobody throws a grenade, just stay in cover behind the pillar, use Blind-fire or shoot from cover to kill all of the enemies in this part (Shotgun and Machine gun work pretty well if you do this).
- Audience Seat (Checkpoint 12)
All enemies are on the bottom of the staircase, and their guns will have flashlights equipped. I don't suggest shooting them from the stairs, as you'll have a limited amount of Bullet Time, and you can die very quickly.
I do suggest you use Shootdodge from the walkway on top of the stairs, this is because there is some cover to help you defend yourself. Keep using Shootdodge until the place is clear. then kill the remaining enemies. You may need a few attempts to complete this.
For the last section where you need to get inside the tower, use cover and Blind-fire to kill all of the enemies. When you climb the final ladder, use all of your Bullet Time (Shootdodge after you've used all of it) to kill the enemies in front of you, then kill the sniper. After that the chapter is complete.
Chapter IV - Anybody Can Buy Me a Drink
The gunfight inside and outside the bar shouldn't be too difficult, use cover and Blind-fire to kill all of the enemies in this part.
- Max Apartment (Hallway)
Remember to kill the enemies in the hallway, then pick up the Painkillers inside your apartment, this is because the Painkillers you have will reset to 1. (You can pick-up the shotgun close to your bed, then leave)
Now if you want to kill all of the enemies that are shooting from the rooftop (With a green laser equipped on their gun), I recommend you get close to the window and keep rolling until you are on the wall between the 2nd and 3rd window. Enemies will find it difficult to flank you here. Either use the shotgun you picked up from your apartment to perform Blind-fire kills, or just let them keep firing to recharge your Bullet Time bar, then just wait for the right time to kill them.
The Rooftop Part, and the gunfight inside another building - Use cover to help you kill all of the enemies.
- Chop Shop Shootout
This part is a bit difficult. The difficult part is not the enemies that are standing in front of you (Unless they move to your right), it's the guy that jumps out from the door on your right. When you deal with the enemies in front of you, you must keep an eye on that door. After you kill the guy that jumps from that room, you should be safe. Use everything you have to kill the remaining enemies in this part, reach the next checkpoint to complete this chapter.
Chapter V - Alive If Not Exactly Well
This is a long chapter, including some of the most difficult parts (Some around halfway through), so prepare yourself for this.
- Container Battle (Gunfight before the dock)
This part is pretty difficult, although you can hide inside the building and stay here until you've kill all of the enemies. However, enemies will still have a chance to throw grenades at you, or come towards you, so stay alert!
If you choose to stay inside the building, then the cover between the windows works quite well. You can shoot from here or use Shootdodge all of the way, just stay alert as some enemies will try to get into here and shoot you.
It's risky if you choose to go outside, this is because enemies will shoot at you from multiple places. You'll want to kill them as quickly as you can before they shoot you, the cover outside of the building isn't that good. Make sure to stay focused here, since there will also be some propane tanks near you, don't stand too close to them!
- Dock Part 1 (before you pass the gate)
This can be pretty tough. After kill the first enemy, this will alert the others, find a box to use as cover. There will be a boat moving from the outside, there are enemies on this boat, so be careful. For the remaining enemies before you go through the gate, you can do the same as I did in the video, however it takes longer since the enemy will coming at you one by one. When they come, use Blind-fire with your machine gun/rifle to kill them all.
If you are brave enough and don't care about dying, just move forward and shoot them. You may lose some Painkillers on this part as it's hard to avoid getting shot.
- Dock Part 2 (After you pass the gate)
Again, Blind-fire to kill the enemies in front of you, then wait for the boat appear and kill the enemies on board. There are more enemies on another boat that is stationary, so plan your next move. I'm sure you know where most of the enemies will show up, so make the right choice and kill them, making sure to avoid getting shot as much as possible.
After that you will get to another bridge, another set of enemies will show up. Use cover to help you, and be careful of the boat that shows up! After completing this part, take a short break to prepare for the chase.
- Boat Chase
This time, the boat chase will test your accuracy. If you kill the enemies or blow up the boat fast enough, your boat will take minimal damage and won't blow up. (On Hardcore it's quite easy to get blown up, especially near the end of the chase)
Try to shoot all of the Molotovs, as your boat will take some damage if they manage to hit it. Halfway through, Passos will repair the boat when it gets hit by the grenade (Only at this point will it be repaired).
For the remainder, try to kill the enemies/blow up the boat and vehicles as quickly as you can, especially towards the end of the chase. If you completed that part, congratulations! Shoot a few more enemies to complete this chapter (Just don't shoot Fabiana, who is in the middle of the boat!).
Chapter VI - A Dame,A Dork and A Drunk
This chapter is difficult but short. Shootdodge works pretty well on this chapter, if you know the best place and time to use it.
- Second Office (2 waves)
No doubt this is the hardest part besides the entrance part, you have to face 2 waves of enemies and the cover available to use isn't good enough. I'll try to give you some tips on how to get past both waves. (Remember to grab the Painkillers in this Office)
This wave consists of 7 enemies, 1 on your left, 2 on your right, 2 in front of you and another 2 a bit further away. To avoid enemies flanking you from the left/right side, I highly recommend that you kill the enemies on both sides first, before dealing with the enemies that are in front of you. (Blind-fire could work well if you have the right weapon)
This wave consist of about 8 enemies, you start this wave in a pretty bad location cover-wise. A few of the enemies will carry shotguns on this part, so be careful when going around a corner. During this part, use Shootdodge as much as possible until all of the enemies are dead (Just like how I did it in the video).
After that, remember to pick up all of the Painkillers and refill your ammo before you leave!
- Entrance Fight
After killing all of the enemies in vehicles, as well as a few more enemies after you jump, 4 more enemies will arrive. The best choice, is continue to use Shootdodge and kill all of the enemies until the Heavy Gunner appears. Remember to kill all other enemies first, then stay in cover and let the Heavy Gunner keep shooting at you (This will slowly increase your Bullet Time bar). When you have at least half of a Bullet Time bar, wait for him to stop firing and reload, then dual wield any weapon, enter Bullet Time, and keep firing at his head until his helmet falls off and he dies.
- Fire Part (After the explosion)
Remember to not stay in the same piece of cover for too long, as this will decrease your health! Use Bullet Time wisely to kill all of the enemies until this part is complete. You can't get shot more than once since you don't have any Painkillers here.
Chapter VII - A Hangover Sent Direct From Mother Nature
This is a very long chapter and includes a few difficult checkpoints, especially near the end of the chapter.
- Strip Club Shootout
Remember, at the beginning you only have 1 Painkiller so you should avoid getting shot. If you have already played the game, I'm sure you know how to deal with the first 5 enemies.
For the remaining enemies in the club, either use Shootdodge or get into cover to kill them. This club will contain 3 Painkillers, so don't forget to pick them up.
- Big Warehouse Shootout
This is another difficult part, cover will be very important in this area. After you're pulled by a chain, kill all of the enemies in here and on the other side, go down stairs and rush into the small room in front of you, the difficult part will begin. Enemies will shoot at you from the other side of this house (This will slowly recharge your Bullet Time bar). Wait for a good time to use Bullet Time to kill them all. (There will be 2 propane tanks, so make good use of them).
After that, remember there is a guy that will kick the door down, he will try shotgun you down. Use Bullet Time to kill him before he shoots! At the same time, 2 more enemies will show up on the other side of the house, finish them off too.
When you get down, more enemies will appear, so use Shootdodge. Cover will be important here as well, slowly clear the house out.
The remaining part isn't very difficult, that is until you reach another house further ahead.
- Gunfight inside/outside the house
Wave 1 (If you jump down to the ground before the enemies appear, only Wave 2 will appear)
You will face 2 waves of enemies here, but the cover you have isn't too great. Again, let them keep firing at you to recharge your Bullet Time bar. Wait for a good moment, then use Bullet Time to shoot as many people as possible. There are 2 enemies on your far right, and you will have difficulty trying to shoot.
When you jump down to the ground, another group of enemies will appear. You will want to kill the enemy on the second floor first, since your cover isn't good enough to protect you. Wait for a good time to use Bullet Time/Shootdodge to kill all of them. The last enemy won't appear until you get into the house, so watch yourself when you get inside.
You'll reach another house after that, using Blind-fire works pretty well if you have the right weapon.
- Gang Territory Part 1
No doubt this is the hardest part of this chapter, lots of enemies are shooting from the house on your left and you have enemies throwing Molotovs at you. If you don't deal with those throwing Molotovs, you could die quite quickly!
Here are some tips that I can give you:
At the beginning, don't shoot first, let them keep firing at you. A few seconds later, you will see a guy on the rooftop of one of the houses, he is the target. You have to kill him before he throws a Molotov, otherwise you could get hit by the Molotov and die. Use Bullet Time to kill him, then quickly get back into the cover. After that, plan your course of action, I suggest recharging your Bullet Time bar and waiting for a good time to use it (The decision is yours, whether to do that or not). Remember that there will be an enemy coming from the stairs in a bit.
2 more enemies will appear in the house behind the stairs. Another shootout will begin once you get through the gate.
- Gang Territory Part 2
This is another tough part, there are 2 enemies on the rooftops (different houses), and 2 more enemies in front of you. Kill them as quickly as possible. After that, a few more enemies will show up from the house on your left, get into cover and kill them one by one to complete this part. Lastly, shoot the rocket and follow the path to complete this chapter.
Chapter VIII - Ain't No Reprievement Gonna Be Found
There are several difficult parts within this chapter, 2 shots from a pistol will kill you/put you in Last Man Standing. I will list the most of the difficult parts in this chapter, for the remainder of the parts, you can just follow the video. Remember to grab the grenade launcher after you kill the goon that carries it, as the grenade launcher will make some of these areas a lot easier.
- Cemetery Shootout (Checkpoint 4, after killing the driver)
I find this checkpoint to be difficult. You have to kill the enemy that carries the grenade launcher as soon as possible, since he mostly will kill you by the time he's shot 3 grenades. You also have to careful due enemies near to him (Passos will probably kill only one of them). When you kill them, 2 more pairs of enemies will come from both sides of the stairs, I recommend you stay in cover and kill them off one by one.
After that, go up and grab the grenade launcher, make sure to save about 3-4 grenades, as they will come in handy later. Take your time to kill the remaining enemies, and try to avoid getting shot a lot, as you won't have many Painkillers and won't be able to find many.
Next section (Checkpoint 5-6) - Shoot a grenade at the goons in front of you, avoid using any more shots as we need to save them. Use any single-handed weapon you have to deal with the rest of the goons here. You can change to a shotgun, then use it to kill the enemies using Blind-fire outside the big door (If you head inside, you won't be able to get out again). When you kill all of the enemies, grab your grenade launcher again.
- Circle Battle Zone (Checkpoint 7)(11:02 of the video)
This is tough. Not only are there a lot of goons shooting at you and Passos, but the cover provided also isn't too great. I have 2 options for you to choose from to complete this part (After rescuing Passos):
Option 1: Go right until you find a piece of cover that is long and curved (With some plants above it), you have few seconds to move to there before enemies begin to shoot at you. When you arrive, kill some of the enemies that are on the right side (To prevent them flanking you from there), then you can plan your next move and kill off the goons one by one.
Option 2: This is riskier (Shown on the video), keep using Shootdodge to kill enemies until you find a piece of cover on your left side (Left side from your starting position). Keep using Shootdodge, and kill all of the enemies until the area is clear (Or stay in cover and kill them one by one).
- Sniper Part (Checkpoint 8 - 14:27 in the video)
If you bring the grenade launcher, follow the route shown in the screenshot below. This should make the situation a lot easier.
Wait for Passos to flank the sniper and give you little time to move to another piece of cover (The piece of cover in front of you, spot 1 in the screenshot). About 3 goons will coming from top of the stairs (Below the tower). If you still have the grenade launcher, quickly aim at the sniper and shoot (This will actually hit the stairs). If you don't have it, figure out the right timing to kill them.
When you have killed them, Passos will help you again by flanking the sniper. Move to the piece of cover on your right (Spot 2 in the screenshot), 3 more goons will come from top of the stairs again. Do the same thing as last time. After that, wait for Passos to flank the sniper again, then keep moving to your right. When you finally see the sniper, just kill him!
One last set of goons will come from the stairs, kill them to complete this part.
- Church (Checkpoint 11)
The first part wasn't too difficult, just use the shotgun (if you have it) or any single-handed weapon to get some Blind-fire kills. Passos will help you kill some of the goons.
The difficult part begins after you go up and kill the goon on second floor. All the goons below you will come at different times, you have to protect yourself as well as avoid letting goons getting close to Passos. If any goon gets close to him, he will die! I suggest you use Shootdodge here to kill the goons as quick as you can. If you don't have enough ammo, there is an ammo crate , you can refill all of your ammo for any weapon you're carrying. Finish off all of the goons to complete this chapter.
Chapter IX - Here I Was Again, Halfway Down The World
Although this chapter is short, you will have a very limited supply of Painkillers to pick up, so try to avoid getting shot.
Remember to explore the area to find Painkillers, weapons and ammo before you leave, as you don't have any Painkillers and you have a very limited ammo supply at the beginning of this chapter.
- Checkpoint 4
Starting from here, you have to face a group of enemies that are well protected. I suggest you use Shootdodge to kill the enemies on the stairs, and the ones coming from the alley or the house after that. For the last pair of enemies, you can shoot them from cover to earn some Bullet Time.
Remember to pick up the Painkillers inside of that lady's house.
- Checkpoint 6 (After you break into the lady' house)
If you want to face a minimal number of enemies, after you leave the lady' house, try to avoid getting hit as you go towards another house. You can follow the video to get some tips on how to complete this part.
- Checkpoint 10 (After take the "Scenic" Route)
Either use Shootdodge, or use Bullet Time to kill the enemies that appear on the bridge. A few more enemies will show up, they will cross the bridge to kill you. So I suggest waiting in cover and using Blind-fire to kill them. If you have enough Bullet Time, you can use it to kill them. Remember to pick up more weapons and ammo, since there are a few more enemies that you have to deal with after that (Don't forget, there is an enemy shooting from the house when you're going down the stairs).
Press the correct button in Quick Time Event to complete this chapter. ( -> -> -> )
* Starting from Chapter 10, the text walkthrough will be slightly different than the video walkthrough.
Chapter X - It's Drive Or Shoot, Sister
(Credit: GTA Series Videos)
This is one of the most difficult chapters in the game, so try to avoid getting shot, as you will there are a limited number of Painkillers that can be found throughout the chapter.
- Abounded Bus (Checkpoint 2)
This part is pretty difficult, as you begin without any Bullet Time and only a single PT92 (Pistol). Since the damage it deals is pretty low, you have to shoot a lot of bullets to kill a single enemy. I prefer to go for a headshot (they don't have helmets), otherwise you will use up a lot of time and ammo to deal with the enemies here.
For the next section (sniper part), either use Shootdodge to move forward while aiming at the rooftop to kill them, or shoot from cover. Be careful, as you have to act fast. If you're too slow, either you or Giovanna will die.
- Gas Station (Checkpoint 4)
Another difficult section. When you can, move quickly while aiming at the sniper on the rooftop (On your right), kill him first. After that, quickly turn the camera to face the cabin in front of you, some enemies will show up from that direction. There is a piece of cover in front of you, keep using Shootdodge to kill all of the enemies until you it.
A few more enemies will show up behind/around the bus, keep your eyes on it after you've killed the enemies that show up from the cabin. Kill them one by one when you can see them, avoid getting shot and hope that they don't throw a grenade at you.
Grab the Painkiller in the cabin, and refill your ammo before you meet Giovanna again.
- Garage Part 2 (Checkpoint 6)
This is one of the toughest parts in this chapter. Bullets will be coming from almost everywhere, you also don't have many pieces of cover that you can use. To make the situation slightly better, shoot the flashing button to drop the bus. Any enemy below the bus will die, this will also block the bullets coming from that angle. You still have to act fast, shoot faster than the enemies are to have a chance of surviving. (Remember to explore the area to find more Painkillers!)
- Final Shootout (Checkpoint 12)
Overall, this part is quite hard. It tests your accuracy and reaction times together. Be careful, if you pop your head up for more than a few seconds, you will get downed very easily.
You can blow up the vehicles to help you kill some of the enemies. I do suggest you to pop in and out of cover, quickly shooting what you can here. (Shoot for less than a few seconds -> get back into cover for a few seconds -> shoot again -> back into cover -> same thing until you kill the last enemy here, don't allow them enough time to shoot you or throw a grenade)
Chapter XI - Sun Tan Oil, Stale Margaritas And Greed
(Credit: GTA Series Videos)
Remember, you will begin this chapter without any Painkillers! Before you start shooting, head to the bathroom in your room to get a Painkiller, then you can get back into the action. The Ship part is pretty difficult, but it will become easier once you leave.
- Engine room (Checkpoint 3)
As soon as you can control Max, quickly move to the right side (Before going up again). If you don't move right, you can die pretty quick. When you find cover, kill the enemies one by one (Shootdodge is a good option) until you complete this part.
If you get shot, don't use any Painkillers. I say this because when the engine blows up, your health will go back to 100%, quickly shut down the 2 engines.
- Ship (Checkpoint 6-8)
Try to stick to any object that can protect you, use them to help you kill the enemies one by one. You should know that there are also some enemies that will use grappling hooks to get onto the ship, don't give them a chance to shoot at all (They will die in one shot if they have yet to board the ship).
During the next part, the enemies will shoot from the canal. The cover provided here isn't very good and doesn't provide full protection. Just hope that you can survive, as the next part will be much more difficult and you'll have to deal with more enemies at short range!
If you have more than 50% Bullet Time, try to use the stairs on the opposite side of the piano to rush to the counter in front of you (kill the enemy that hides on the other side of the counter). This counter will provide you with more protection, you can perform some Blind-fire kills from here. Kill the remaining enemies to complete this part.
- Tower (Checkpoint 9)
You have to face two waves of enemies when you are on the ground. I think the safest option would be to let the enemies keep shooting at you to increase your Bullet Time, once you have enough Bullet Time to kill them, use it to kill them one by one (You will be safe in cover anyway). It may take you longer to complete this part, but it's worth it. (You can use the truck beside you to get more Painkillers, and refill your ammo)
* Be careful! You have to kill the at least one enemy during the first wave, otherwise Passos will try to run into the tower, when he does he will die
After this the remaining parts will become easier, take your time and always use cover to provide some protection while you kill the enemies.
Chapter XII - The Great American Savior Of The Poor
(Credit: GTA Series Videos)
During this chapter you won't find many Painkillers to help you, so try your best to avoid getting shot. The video above will help you go through some of the difficult parts in this chapter, I will list out some of them in the text guide below.
- Rooftop pool house (Checkpoint 6)
This is a very long checkpoint and you'll have to deal with a lot of enemies, all in different directions. In the video walkthrough, this part begins at 13:23.
When you grab the shotgun, kill the enemies that are standing in front of you as quick as you can. Now go left and stick to the wall, you should be able to see the enemies coming ahead of you. Try to kill them before they shoot you, after that move to the tennis court where a few more enemies will appear on your left. Quickly kill them.
Another set of enemies will appear shortly on your left, once you have nearly reached the other side of the building. Find a good spot to get into cover, then slowly pick your target to kill them. Remember to pick up the painkiller inside the bar after the gunfight.
- Rooftop (After plant the bomb, Checkpoint 11)
This is probably the most difficult part of this chapter, you'll have to complete this part within a time limit. This is because the building will collapse, you need to deal with a heavy gunner at the end too. In the video above, this part is at 28:26.
Kill enemies when the building isn't shaking, you can't aim very well when the building is shaking (The worst thing is that the enemy still have very good aim during these moments). If you want extra Painkillers, there are 2 Painkillers in the room just after you going up the stairs (Right side of the stairs).
The heavy gunner might be difficult to deal with, you may want to wait for him to stop firing, this way you can aim at his head during Bullet Time to kill him.
Chapter XIII - A Fat Bald With A Bad Temper
(Credit: GTA Series Videos)
This is the most difficult chapters in this game, not only do you have to deal with enemies that have a lot of protection (helmets and heavy body armour), but you'll mostly be fighting in short to medium range. Stay alert on this chapter, and try to pick up as many Painkillers as you can to give you extra health.
The video above provides some very useful tips on some difficult parts. I'll try to explain some of the most difficult parts in the text walkthrough below.
- After the Prison area (Checkpoint 4)
Take the shotgun from one of the cops in the prison area.
You will begin this part using a pillar as cover. I recommend that you stay here if you have the shotgun, then once an enemy is getting close to you, you can use the shotgun to perform a Blind-fire kill, they should die within 2 shots. Continue to do that until you run out of ammo, then use your pistol to kill the remaining cops.
- Underground Car Park (Checkpoint 5)
There are 2 difficult parts here. First one is to deal with the APC, the other is to deal with the enemies that come from the gate below the APC.
I highly recommend that you follow the video during this part (10:58). First, wait for the APC to stop firing, then quickly grab the LAW from the ground, then get into cover (Since the APC will start firing again). Wait until the APC stops firing again, then use the LAW to blow it up.
Shootout part - (11:26)
Quickly kill anyone that you spot in this car park, while staying behind cover. If you picked up a rifle at the previous checkpoint, you can use it to help you earn some Bullet Time, as well as kill the cops here. Kill them until the place is clear, then refill your ammo.
(Ammo crate in this car park can only refill your grenade launcher ammo)
You can decide to use the grenade launcher or not here, but there is a con to using the grenade launcher. If you go into last man standing when using the grenade launcher, if you fire a grenade from that moment onwards, it will also be in slow motion, this means that you may die before the grenade kills the enemy who downed you!
- Office (Checkpoint 9)
This part is difficult, it may remind you of the office in Chapter 6, as this part mostly involves fighting at short range. There is a heavy gunner here too once you've killed all of the cops.
I suggest that you dual wield your pistols ,then use Shootdodge (You can instantly reload while using Shootdodge) to kill enemies (Since most enemies will have helmets during this part, you need 2 to shoot them twice to kill them) until the place is clear. When the heavy gunner arrives, avoid getting shot and quickly shoot him in the head to kill him. Remember to pick up some ammo as well as a Painkiller in this office.
- Shooting Range (Checkpoint 17)
Use a rifle or machine gun during this part, then use the sandbag as cover. You can follow the video (34:25 to find a way to get through this part without getting shot too much.
Stay behind the sandbag, when you spot a cop, quickly kill him. This will help you build up your Bullet Time bar, you can then use it in an emergency situation, or use it later. Kill all of them, refill ammo, then get ready for the boss fight.
- Boss Fight (Checkpoint 18-19)
There are 2 options to help you complete the first part (Before the boss fight):
Option 1: Stay inside a room (Painkiller 17 location)
As soon as you regain control of Max, quickly kill the cops that come from the stairs. Now go into the room on your left, stay behind the window and wait for the enemies to come to you, keep killing them until you trigger a cut-scene. This might require more time, which means you lose the chance to collect more Painkillers, but you will probably get shot less.
Option 2: going down to face the cops
Quickly kill the cops coming from the stairs, then go down them, once you're at the bottom of the stairs, turn left and use the pillar as cover. Now you have to stay alert, as enemies can come from both sides of the pillar and kill you. Kill them when they show up until you trigger a cut-scene.
Part 2 - Boss Fight
The video above shows a pretty good solution on how to shoot the roof above the boss without get shot to death. That part begins at (38:28). Before we can do that, kill the enemies that are standing in front of you, then quickly move left to find a good spot where the boss can't kill you from. Now just keep shooting the roof until it falls.
After that, two enemies carrying LMG. 30's will come to kill you, the only way to kill them is with a headshot. Stay behind cover and use and to look at both sides, kill them as soon as you spot them. When you're done, move a little bit behind you until you can shoot the roof above the boss, keep shooting it until it falls. Wait for a few seconds until the boss stands up, then kill him with a headshot to complete this chapter.
Chapter XIV - One Card Left To Play
(Credit: GTA Series Videos)
Although this is the final chapter, stay alert as our job is not yet complete! As usual, use cover to help you kill the enemies, as well as provide some protection. Also remember to search for Painkillers before you leave, as almost all gunfight locations will have Painkillers lying around somewhere.
- Beginning Shootout (Checkpoint 2)
This isn't very difficult, try to find cover as soon as you regain control of Max. Use Shootdodge going left first to find cover (Stay there, see the screenshot below), kill the enemies when they show up until the place is clear.
Pick up the MD-97L (Rifle), then move to the second floor. Slowly kill the enemies one by one without rushing too much.
- Airport Terminal (Checkpoint 4)
Since the airport terminal is quite big, it's pretty difficult to avoid getting shot, since the enemies will shoot at you from multiple directions, or throw a grenade.
Remember, there are two waves of enemies you have to deal with here. After you have finished the first wave, move up past the halfway point (The gate in the middle of this airport). Doing so will spawn another wave of enemies, you can move back to find a pillar beside the gate, use this as cover to slowly pick off the enemies one by one. It may take you a while to complete this part.
After the gunfight (Music will stop), try to search for Painkillers (There are a total of 5 Painkillers in this place), as well as refill your ammo.
- Boss Fight (Checkpoint 10)
* Remember to pick up the 2 Auto 9MM (Pistol) when you're still on the train, this will make the boss fight a bit easier.
Although you can still do the same thing that you did on Hard playthrough, you will have less Bullet Time, as well as that you will take more damage. This will make it more difficult for you (You still can do this to complete this part faster).
Extra Option: Shootdodge
This might be a bit risky and difficult, all you have to do is keep using Shootdodge (Quickly get back into cover when you're on the ground) to kill all of the enemies. This requires you to have quite good aim (Kill at least one enemy per Shootdodge), as well as good timing (Shoot the grenades during Shootdodge).
Complete this part and kill the boss, then blow up everything on the runway to complete this chapter.
When the plane blows up once again and the cut-scene begins, you will receive the "Payne in the Ass" achievement for completing the story on Hardcore difficulty.
As of now, most of the single player achievement should be completed (If you have been following the walkthrough). Next we will head over to Arcade Mode to get the remaining achievements.
