If you do not have all of the DLC installed, the game has 3 compatibility packs that you need to download so you can play against people who do have DLC items:
Multiplayer is a new addition to the Max Payne series and provides standard multiplayer modes such as Deathmatch & Team Deathmatch whilst adding some unique mode such as Payne killer & Gang Wars.
To access multiplayer, you need to select "Multiplayer" from the main menu. You have to use Disc 1 to access multiplayer content unless you have the Game on Demand Version.
If Disc two is in the drive, you will be prompted to swap discs without returning to the dashboard.
For the multiplayer, there are total of 11 achievements (without DLC). If you have all DLC, 19 achievements (total of 30 achievements) will be added for full completion (1,665 GamerScore).
The Multiplayer walkthrough will be split into a few parts to help you complete it as quickly as possible. Let us start off with some easy achievements first.
1. Achievements that require another gamertag
Head in to the multiplayer menu. Before you search for a game, send an invite to someone on your friends list. Press to bring up the friend list (right side of the screen). Then press , choose a friend to send a game invite to, and you will receive this achievement. Note that your friend does not need to be online, accept the invite, or even have Max Payne 3 for the achievement to pop.
When you are in the a game, send a friend request to all of your opponents. They do not need to accept the request, and as soon as you kill one person, pop. Achievement unlocked. Team kills do not count so ensure you are on opposing sides.
Another option would be to create or join a gaming session for any of the multiplayer achievements in Max Payne 3 (DLC is popular), and add the other participants at the start of the session so you can unlock this at the same time.
After you have completed those two achievements, you can now work on other multiplayer achievements.
After an opponent has been killed, head over to the dead body, and press & hold to start to loot the corpse. To get this achievement, you have hold until your character stands back up. You do not have to kill the enemy yourself.
You can loot faster if you have the "Light Fingers" perk active in your loadout (Local Justice DLC Required).
2. Specific Game Mode Related Achievements (Public lobby)
When you start the multiplayer for the first time, you will find that many game modes (e.g. Payne Killer & Gang Wars) are locked. If you want to unlock these modes, you need to accumulate 50 online kills in ...
Rookie & Normal Deathmatch / Team Deathmatch
At the beginning, you can only choose Rookie Deathmatch and Rookie Team Deathmatch to play. These two modes will disappear when you level up and get enough kills to be replaced by the standard playlists. These game modes put you in lobbies with other new players so you don't get pulverised by level 50 players with sawn off shotguns whilst you are feeling yourself into the game.
Choose "Rookie Deathmatch" or Deathmatch (standard playlists from) to start the battle on the map. If you want to have more of a chance to win, make sure to join the game that is not near the end. If this happens, leave the game, and join another lobby.
I highly recommend that you to do this in "Rookie Deathmatch" as in normal Deathmatch you may face a lot of high level and/or skilled players. These players tend to like running around with dual-sawn off shotguns. While in "Rookie Deathmatch", nearly everyone will use the same preset loadout so the chance of winning will be much higher in this mode. Stay focused, use cover, and kill as many players as you can to finish 1st in that match in order to win the "Deathmatch Challenge" achievement.
Whilst working on Deathmatch Challenge, you can also unlock a kill related achievement. Simply kill 100 enemies (can be the same player) to unlock this one. Payne Bringer will take a few rounds for you to unlock to it, but the kills only count in public matches.
After you have killed 50 players to unlock Standard playlists (e.g. Payne killer, Gang Wars), you can start working on
Complete One Of Each Game Mode Including All Gang Wars
For this achievement, you have to complete all the Multiplayer Modes (include all Gang Wars) that are available (excluding DLC modes & Hardcore playlist), and you don't have to win, just complete it.
- Deathmatch (Can be done in Rookie Deathmatch)
- Team Deathmatch (Can be done in Rookie Team Deathmatch)
- Payne killer
- Gang Wars
- Last Man
- Turf Grab
- Total Turf
- Short Fuse
- Showdown (Last Chapter in Gang Wars)
- Survivor (Last Chapter in Gang Wars)
For Gang Wars, there is also an achievement specific to that mode. If you have good teammates and successfully win all 5 chapters, you will receive the following achievement. Make sure you play the game from the first chapter and not halfway through or you can't unlock it even if your team wins all 5 chapters.
Flawless Team Gang Wars Victory
Whilst working on that achievement, you might also want to work on this achievement too.
To unlock the ability to bet wagers, you need to earn $2,000 in multiplayer. You can earn cash by leveling up, looting dead bodies, completing objectives etc...
Once you have earned total of $2,000, play any Gang Wars match. At the beginning of each chapter in Gang Wars, press to bring up the screen to bet. Each time will have different bets, and 3 different players to to bet on ($100 each time, sometimes there will have free wagers). However, if you see your name, or someone who dominated last round, bet on them or yourself.
3. Multiplayer Level Related Achievements
There are 3 level related achievements - Level 7, level 40, and level 50.
You unlock all faction characters at level 7 and thus
Level 40 will unlock all weapons
The final achievement is for hitting Rank 50
and there are two methods that you can use.
1. Complete Single Player Grind + Arcade Mode
The fastest way to get XP is in Single Player via Arcade Mode. If you have completed the story (or at least Chapter 4), you can start to use this method.
From Main Menu, Choose Arcade Mode. Then choose either Score Attack or New York Minute.
For Score Attack, you just need to complete the story until Chapter 5 begin while New York Minute unlocks later, so I will only talk about the Score Attack method.
In Score Attack (Choose Chapter 4, Part 1), your objective is getting as many points as possible. To make the game easier, choose Soft Lock. After the game is loaded, quickly kill the enemies and try to avoid missing a shot, as if an enemy didn't get hit when you fire, your multiplier will be lost.
You should be able to complete this chapter within a few minutes. If you get the Platinum Medal (~7000 points), you will have 1,000 XP after each run. After the Summary screen shows up, you can press to retry. Your XP will be saved, and you can save some time to avoid extra loading screens.
For this method, you should get at least 12,000 XP every hour (based on how much time you complete a single run & loading time).
2. Complete Multiplayer + Multiplayer Grind
Leveling up to the highest level is a very long grind, but compared to the Single Player XP method, this will be less boring since you don't need to play the same level, same enemy, and same action over and over.
Play it legit
You can look for Boosting Methods for more tips.
Deathmatch and Gang Wars is the fastest way to level up if you play it by yourself. Kill as many enemies as you can (Deathmatch), or work with your team to complete the objective. Assist them (Gang Wars) to earn extra XP. You also can work on those grinds to earn extra XP.
If you are in a crew, and there is at least 1 crew member inside your any team based game, you can work with them to earn some extra XP like kill assists and crew killing challenges (must kill each rival crew member to start the challenge and get as many as you can for your team before the rival crew kills enough of your crew members to win the challenge to receive extra XP).
If you want to fully control a lobby, you need to have 8 players so that no randoms can join your Deathmatch lobby. Make sure to play it in a public lobby instead of Private lobby! (Playlist -> Soft Lock / Free Aim -> Deathmatch)
You can use Gaming Sessions to join or host a gaming session to boost your XP. Look out for Rockstar events which give 3 x XP. The last one was August 2013, so quite a while ago. If one does surface, take full advantage, and boost as much as you can.
When you are in the lobby, make sure to choose the smallest map so you can kill everyone faster and earn more XP in a single match. (If you can't see the Map appear you want to choose, leave the lobby with your party, and then join again). By far the smallest map is "Branco Headquarters" (or the office from Single Player Chapter 6).
Each kill will give you 50 XP, 75 XP for Headshot. If you play in Free Aim, you will have little more XP for each kill, but Soft Lock will work faster. You can complete some Grinds at the same time to get even more XP to decrease the time you needed to Level 50.
When you gain enough XP, you should receive these 2 level based achievements.
For "Man of Many Weapons" achievement, you need to be Level 40. (416,200 XP) This will also unlock a lot of powerful weapon as well as items, avatar clothes, etc...
When you reach level 50, you must be a well trained soldier / Gang Member now! You will receive "Training Complete" achievement. (619,500 XP)
If you have any of the DLC, I recommend you to complete them when you make your way to level 50 as most of them are Multiplayer content.
If you level up to Rank 50 by playing Arcade Mode, you may find that this achievement did not unlock. To solve it, simply join any public Multiplayer match. When in the loading screen or inside the game, this achievement should unlock.
Congratulations! You should have now completed both the Single Player and Multiplayer for the basic 1,000 GamerScore. If you are looking for any DLC Walkthroughs, feel free to click Next Page / link below / sidebar to continue for full completion.
