16. Railway Empire DLC - Northern EuropeUpdate notes

Welcome to the walkthrough for the Northern Europe DLC for Railway Empire!

To obtain the 8 achievements included in this DLC pack you are looking at playing the scenario and then a 100-year free mode game. Overall you are looking at 6-10 hours of game time to finish it.

Scenario

Load up the Hibernation scenario with normal rails and trainiac pause mode and choose your character (I personally used the inventor/scientist guy for free maintenance buildings)

Let me say that this is not a particularly easy scenario, there are 4 parts to it and although the first part is easy you need to be building ready for part 2 before completing part 1 and in early part 3 you need to be setting up for later tasks in part 3. There are a total of 25 tasks to complete which mainly involve city growth and producing and transporting high quality goods. For city growth on this map you will need a considerable amount of different goods starting with Grain, Fish and Logs which are basic followed by Crispbread and Sausages which both need to be manufactured, then comes Vegetables, Milk and Apples which are basic plus Brunost which is manufactured and possibly Cloth and Knitwear although these are not always necessary depending on how quickly you need to grow the city.

Remember to build museums once a city reaches 60,000 to help keep a city growing.

We start off with a station in Vasteras and 3 tasks to complete, the first is simple enough and is completed by building a station in nearby Orebro. Follow this by connecting the cities and then building a station at the nearby Grain farm and connecting this also, create a train each to deliver Grain to both cities and a train to take Freight and 2 trains to take Passengers & Mail between the cities. Now build a station at the Vegetable farm to the west and connect this to Orebro to complete Task 2 for building 131 miles of rail network. Task 3 should complete shortly as it is for 50,000kr quarterly profit.

After some dialogue from our advisor we have more area to build and Task 4 which is to grow Stockholm to 35,000 population so start by building a station there and connecting it, then build stations at the Fish farm to the west, Uppsala and the Logging business to the north, connect all these and supply Stockholm with the first 3 goods plus Crispbread from Orebro. Add some Passenger & Mail trains to your line between Vasteras and Stockholm and then just wait until Task 4 completes while saving your money.

Once Task 4 is complete we are given another 3 which require us to buy the territory to the south of Stockholm at a cost of 350,000kr so do this as soon as possible and connect Stockholm to the nearby Pig farm. Next we want to connect to Nykoping and Linkoping to the south and start growing them, there is Logs, Milk, Apples and Grain available now to the north of Nykoping and Linkoping which are well worth using so connect these when you can, whilst your new cities are growing it is time to make sure your other cities of Orebro, Vasteras and Uppsala are well supplied and growing now as we want them to reach 60,000 population to help with later tasks.

Task 5 will probably be your first completed for connecting 120,000 people to your rail network followed by Task 7 for 8,000 population in Linkoping and finally Task 6 for 17,500 population in Nykoping. This will give complete part 1 and give us the first 4 tasks of part 2, after some dialogue purchase the territory of Vastergotland which contains Gotenberg and Jonkoping and then connect these cities to Orebro to complete Tasks 8 and 9. Create a few Passengers & Mail trains from Stockholm to Gotenberg to work on Task 10 and then start supplying and growing Gotenberg for Task 11.

At this point you want to buy the industry in Uppsala and replace it with a Sawmill (supplied by Logs from the north), buy the 2 industries in Vasteras and replace them with a Steel Industry (supplied by coal to the north and Iron to the west) and a Toolmakers, also buy an industry in Orebro and replace it with a furniture industry (supplied by Hardware from Vasteras and Lumbar from Uppsala). Make sure these are all well supplied as we are going to need a lot of furniture to transport. Buy the industry in Linkoping and replace it with a Dairy farm (supplied by the Dairy business to the north), again make sure this is well supplied as we will need a lot of Brunost to transport. If needed grow these cities so you can expand the industries to produce quicker.

It may help with your goods supply to the cities to buy and upgrade the needed rural businesses, Also connect Gotenberg south to Halmstad and Vasteras north to Borlange here.

With Tasks 10 and 11 complete we are given another 3 and the first requires us purchase the territory of Scania and connect to Malmo which is south of Halmstad, doing this will complete Task 12 and also 13 for connecting to 11 cities, once this is done connect east of Malmo to Kristianstad and Kariskrona and start growing these cities as well as Halmstad. When they are all supplied add Passenger & Mail trains to a lot of routes between cities as Task 14 is for a quarterly revenue from Passengers of 650,000kr.

Whilst you are waiting for Task 14 to complete make sure Uppsala is still growing and if you can buy the businesses there and replace them with a Chemical Industry and a Toy Industry, supply Coal from the nearby Mine and make sure these is a good production of the Complex Board Games, transport these to any of the big cities that require them or create warehouses to store them in and transport them there. Once you have produced 200 you will earn

  • PARADÖX

Produce 200 complex board games in the "Hibernation" scenario.

    PARADÖX

Once Task 14 is complete we are given our final 3 tasks of part 2 which are to connect to 30 rural businesses, deliver 200 loads of Furniture to Gotenberg and deliver 200 loads of Brunost to Kariskrona. If you followed the earlier setting up you should have a good supply of both needed goods so just create trains to take the required goods to the required city using the route options to 'Prioritize' the Furniture and Brunost on each of the respective trains. Once you are sure you have a good amount of each transporting it is time to connect to more rural businesses to complete Task 15 if you haven't already completed it. With 200 of each of the loads transported you will complete Tasks 16 and 17 along with part 2.

As part 3 starts we need to purchase the territory of Norway and although it is not strictly needed we want to purchase the nearby territory of Varmland also. Buy out the competitor that is based in Norway and liquidate everything, follow this by connecting all 7 cities across Norway and Varmland to your network to complete Task 18 which was simply to connect Oslo to Vasteras. Task 19 is to boost Norway to 300,000 inhabitants so connect to the rural businesses in the area and start supplying and growing the 5 cities (Oslo, Skien, Frederikstad, Kristiansand and Rjuken)

Ideally Oslo should reach 90,000 population as we want 3 businesses there.

Whilst your Norwegian cities are growing we need to look at purchasing and replacing industries again; Oslo wants a Sausage Maker, Toolmakers and Preservers (as soon as possible), Frederikstad wants a Dairy and Distillery, Skien wants a Bakery and Weavers, Rjuken wants a Steel Industry and finally Kristiansand doesn't matter so much but a Weavers and Tailors will help with growing Oslo. With these done make sure Rjuken is well supplied with Iron and Coal (again it may help to buy and upgrade the businesses supplying those) and make sure Oslo is well supplied with Steel from Rjuken as well as Fish from the west and Salt from south for Frederikstad. With good production of the Hardware and Canned Fish you will be set once Task 19 is complete.

Once Norway hits 300,000 inhabitants you will complete Task 19 and be given Tasks 20 and 21 which are to deliver 200 loads of Hardware to Skien and deliver 150 loads of Canned Fish to Frederikstad, with your production in Oslo simply create trains to 'Prioritize' the goods and transport them to the respective cities. Whilst this is going on purchase the territory of Smaland to the east and connect to the 3 cities located there.

Once you have delivered the Canned Fish and Hardware to complete Tasks 20 and 21 you will get another 4 tasks which are marked as 'optional' although I would recommend completing them to finish the scenario sooner and help with earning a president rating. These 4 tasks all focus on Denmark to the south west, start by purchasing the territory of Denmark which will complete Task 22.

For Task 24 we need to boost Denmark to 600,000 inhabitants (it should already be over 580,000) which means only a little growth is needed, build a station in Copenhagen and supply all the needed goods to grow Copenhagen by enough to complete Task 24.

If you don't already have it you will unlock the following achievement somewhere around here

  • LǺNGSTRUMP

Connect 1 million citizens to your railroad network in Northern Europe.

    LǺNGSTRUMP
Offline Mode - These achievements require play in game modes that do not necessitate a connection to any online services.Single Player - These achievements can be obtained by a single player.

With these last 4 tasks we have the ability to buy out the remaining competitors so now is the time to buy out the competitor that is operating in Copenhagen/Naestved and once again liquidate everything. Before building in this area we want to build a station in Flensborg and connect this to your network, create a few trains periodically to transport Passengers & Mail direct from Stockholm to Flensborg, now you can connect Naestved to your network and now start working on buying out your remaining competitor as your income should be massive at this point (once this competitor is bought out you want to keep everything this time and connect their rail network to your existing one) Doing so will earn you

  • KONGLÖMERǺD

Connect all cities to each other in the "Hibernation" scenario.

    KONGLÖMERǺD
Offline Mode - These achievements require play in game modes that do not necessitate a connection to any online services.Single Player - These achievements can be obtained by a single player.

You will most likely buy out your remaining competitor to complete Task 25 before the 20 Passengers are transported to Flensborg for Task 23, however it doesn't matter which way round it happens and once both are done that is scenario complete!

You should also have earned a president rating for the scenario which will net you

Personally I completed it in November 1870 with a 36.6 rating

Free Mode

As with some of the other DLC's, completing a 100-year era free game can be done in 2 different ways - which are to either complete all your Tasks as quick as you can or just let them all expire - and the choice is up to you.

As there aren't any specific tasks to complete - and the task list is different every time you play a Free Mode game - there isn't much assistance I can give towards completing it. However, if you need to grow cities up to 40,000 population then focus on the first 5 goods (Grain, Fish, Logs, Sausages and Crispbread) and then add some of the higher goods if you need a higher population (you will need to supply most of the goods down to Coal to obtain 120,000+ populations). For connecting X amount of cities, businesses or stations simply connect the required amount of those and you will probably get a couple of other tasks such as build a museum/university at a specific city.

Start a 100-year free mode game on the Germany Map. Start it with the maximum money you can, 0 competitors and turn off territories. Use the normal rail network and I would recommend having Kolding as your starting city.

Once your game has loaded, build your rail network around Kolding as the first few goods you need are all in the area. There are a few cities you can expand to and grow (Flensborg, Odense, Aarhus, Holstebro and Aalborg). Get to a point where you are growing all these cities because you want plenty of income.

Once your cities are growing and earning you plenty of money you want to connect to the city of Oslo which is far north and setup a few trains on a direct route from Oslo to Flensborg that transports Passengers & Mail, once these trains have transported a total of 100 passengers you will unlock

  • NÖNSTÖPP

Transport 100 passengers from Oslo to Flensborg without any stops in a Northern Europe free game.

    NÖNSTÖPP

With that done just keep playing to complete your tasks or leave your game idling and then use your innovation points to unlock the following 3 locomotives

  • Odin 2-2-2
  • Prins August 2-4-0
  • SJB II 4-6-0

This will earn you

  • RAGNALÖK

Unlock the three Northern Europe locomotive engines in a 100 year era.

    RAGNALÖK

Then once you either complete all of your tasks or they all expire you will earn

  • LOKI

Complete a 100-year era free game in Northern Europe.

    LOKI

And that is 8/8 achievements and 200/200 gamerscore and concludes this walkthrough!
