13. Solar Jetman (1990)
Thanks to this game’s password system, it’s possible to unlock all of the main game achievements without properly playing the game. So, shall we get straight to it?
Start the game for the first time and you’ll unlock:
On the menu screen use and select “Continue”. Enter the password QQQQQQQQQQQQ. This will take you straight to the end-of-game bonus stage, where you’ll unlock:
Heart of Gold
Solar Jetman: Collect all pieces of the Golden Warpship over time.
You don’t even have to land on the planet, you’ll get them both on the Approaching Planet screen.
Start a new game and fly about a bit. Next, start a new game and enter the password ZQBPQQQQDMNB. Land on the planet and fly around a bit. Now start another new game and enter the password KBBKBBDBBQPB. Again, land on the planet and fly around a bit. This will unlock:
Now you need to actually play the game a little bit – though we’re still going to use a save game to minimise that. To the left of the mother ship (you can either start a new game or simply continue with the previous one) is a large gap leading downwards. Fly down to the bottom (you must be in your ship – you cannot carry equipment with just your space suit) and you’ll find a piece of equipment:
Collect this item and fly back up the gap (the ship will be much more difficult to control now). Once you’re safely past all of the guns and near to your mothership, create a save game. Now fly the piece of equipment over the top of the mothership and it will be automatically collected.
Once the “Your probes now have shields” screen appears, reaload the save and repeat. Return this item 50 times to unlock:
And now it’s time for the Snapshots. The first snapshot requires you to collect 10 gems before your fuel runs out. There is no time limit (fuel runs out when you crash into things) so just take it slowly. Once you collect them all you’ll unlock:
The second snapshot requires you to collect and deliver three fuel canisters within 90 seconds. You’ll need to use to boost your way around as the fuel canisters are so heavy. The mothership is directly above you and just to the right so it’s very easy.
The third snapshot requires you to return to your Jetpod. You will be in only your spacesuit here so you can’t take any damage from enemies. Fly to the left until the tunnel opens up into a large area. Now fly up to the ceiling and continue flying to the left. Follow the ceiling to the left and you’ll find a small gap leading upwards – your Jetpod is a short way up here.
The fourth snapshot requires you to collect and deliver a game without destroying your Jetpod – your Jetpod can only take 3 hits before it is destroyed (some enemies can destroy it in one hit). You also only have 90 seconds to do so. This is probably the hardest of the snapshots so it may take a number of attempts.
Fly all the way to the left (use your boost as well) and then fly upwards when you reach the cavern wall. Your mothership is just off to the right once you’ve flown upwards. It sounds easy, but it’s a lot trickier than it sounds – the gravity is all over the place on this level and it’s incredibly difficult just to fly in a straight line.
The fifth snapshot requires you to defeat a boss. It a large green leviathan with four eyes. You need to destroy each of its four eyes in order to complete the snapshot. You can only damage the eyes when they’re open, and they take quite a lot of damage each. All the while, the leviathan will be throwing blue rocks at you. Luckily, the controls are pretty easy so just take your time, avoid the rocks and blast the hell out of the eyes. You can only take about three hits before you die.
Once you’ve completed it, you’ll unlock:
Complete all of the Solar Jetman snapshots.
And that is all of the achievements and Stamps unlocked for this game. Congrats!
