6. Underwurlde (1984)
Before we start – this is a terrible game. The controls are horrible, the movement is horrible, and the mechanics are horrible. With that said...
The Cheat menu is yet again our friend. We’re going to have to do two saves for this game – for the first save, set both Infinite Lives and No Enemies to on. The object of the game is to slaughter the Underwurlde Guardians (the Devil, a Demon and a Beetle) before making your escape. There are three exits at the top of the map, and it doesn’t matter which you use.
The three Guardians require specific weapons to kill them. The Devil can only be killed with the Fire Torch, the Demon can only be killed with the Bow, and the Beetle can only be killed with the Dagger. Here’s the catch – the weapon positions are randomised. Luckily, they’re not too randomized, and each weapon has four rooms it can appear in.
So, for your first save, the aim is to get the three weapons you need to kill the Guardians and then make your escape. The second save will be to get to the very bottom of the Underwurlde before farming enemy kills for the milestone. You can try to play with the enemies on if you like, but it’s ridiculously frustrating to do so.
There are a number of enemies in the game, but they are not inherently deadly. Instead, they will attempt to knock you off platforms, nudge you off ropes, and otherwise find interesting ways to make you fall to your death. There’s so many of them that this will be happening continuously if you don’t turn them off in the Cheat Menu.
The enemy you need to look out for the most is the eagle, as it will pick you up, fly high and then drop you. You can survive quite a decent-size fall, but it’s possible to drop several screens before hitting the floor when an eagle drops you, and this obviously won’t end well. In the very first room you’ll find a catapult – this is the weapon you’ll be using on the regular enemies (such as the eagle).
Here is a map with the locations of the start position, exits, Guardians, and possible Weapon spawns (click to enlarge):
Load up the game and get started. This will unlock:
The first thing you need to do is work out which rooms the weapons are in. Once you have your first weapon, head to the relevant Guardian and kill them. Repeat this with the other two weapons and Guardians. Once you proceed to the next screen after killing your third Guardian, you will unlock:
Underwurlde: Over time, defeat all of the Underwurlde Guardians.
Once all three are dead,” simply” leave the Underwurlde to unlock:
Now start a new save (leave both cheats on) and work your way all the way down to the very bottom of the map. Once you reach the bottom (you may have to walk to another screen and back to trigger it properly), you’ll unlock:
Now turn the enemies back on and tape the button down until you have your 1,000 kills. Once you reach this total, you’ll unlock:
Now it’s time to start on the Snapshots. The first Snapshot is very simple. You’re invincible and need to score 5000 points in 60 seconds. Grab the collectibles on the screen, and you’ll have done it. Once completed, you’ll unlock:
Jump To It
Complete an Underwurlde snapshot.
The second Snapshot requires you to find a gem and collect it without dying. The gem is directly above you, so ride the rope up and grab it.
The third Snapshot requires you ascend 6 floors without dying. There are no enemies so just take your time. Just work your way straight upwards to complete it.
The fourth Snapshot requires you to ascend downwards and then climb back up the next side. Take the rope downwards to the bottom, head to the right, and then ride the bubbles back up the other side. Once you jump to the ledge on the right, you will complete the Snapshot.
The fifth Snapshot requires you to reach the very bottom of the map without dying. This requires you to descend 20 levels. Collect as many gems as you can along the way as they provide temporary invincibility (they last 15 seconds each). The controls are so bad that this one will be particularly frustrating...
Once you complete it (and probably buy a new controller), you’ll unlock:
That is all of the achievements and Stamps unlocked for this game. Congrats!
