Start your game on Casual. There is only 1 difficulty based achievement in the game that can be done very quick and doesn't warrant another whole playthrough. Casual lets you earn all the medals without much frustration. Medals don't all need to be earned in one playthrough, and once you earn one you can forget about it on another playthrough.
Unlike other Resident Evil games, you do not need to achieve an S rank on any of the levels, so do not worry about your time or rank on each level. There are a couple of medals for doing certain levels or parts of levels under a certain time limit, so I will make a note of these as we go.
The locations of collectibles like the Kafka drawings and Tower Emblems (with the exception of those related to a particular medal in Episode 4) won't be listed because they are not necessary for the achievements.
Also, while you can play this game cooperatively using local split-screen, I will be writing this guide under the assumption that you are playing the single-player campaign.
This walkthrough will be as detailed as possible telling you about medals and obtaining items. But if you just need the main directions, check the Countdown Mode section of the page for an abbreviated walkthrough.
Watch the video while playing if you need more details on where to get a certain medal.
1:35 Knock down enemies 5 times by blinding them with the light, then hitting them with a physical attack.
4:28, 6:29 Defeated 8 enemies with the rotating blades (you can crouch under the blades in the fire bust area to make this easier)
8:30 Stunned 10 enemies with Moira's light
5:00 Defeated 8 enemies with sub-weapons
4:08 Defeated 3 enemies using the stealth attack
8:30 Defeated 8 enemies with a headshot
2:30 Found 3 treasures
5:00 Killed 10 Giant Whip Spiders
2:57, 3:50, 11:45 Opened 3 military boxes
2:10 Found 6 hidden items with Moira
Exit your cell and head right, moving forward while the game takes you through some basic controls ( to move camera, + to run). As you move ahead, you'll find Moira in a cell on the left. Move toward her, and press to release her from confinement. After the cutscene, you will be able to move forward through the opened door. Keep going straight ahead, and press to open the door at the end of the corridor. Move around to the left, and press to jump across the gap when prompted. Press to climb the ladder, and shimmy across the ledge. Drop down to the walkway below you, and turn left at the barrel. Turn left up some stairs, and then take a right. Move past the door with blood on it, and enter the room on the right, where you will find the Knife on the table. You will need to get 100 kills with the knife for:
Some tips with the knife that will be useful later: pressing performs a basic knife attack. Holding continuously slashes, which is useful when you do not want to do any special follow-up attacks (necessary for the Cutting Edge achievement). There's no need to grind for this achievement, as you will unlock this easily while you progress and try to save ammo in some places.
After picking up your trusty blade, you can head out of this room and enter the door that we passed with blood in front of it. You'll need to press to break the glass and press to vault over into the next room. There will be an item (I believe it is always handgun ammo) in the drawer to the right. Now you can exit this room through the door on the right and move left down the hallway. Turn left to head through another door.
Moving forward, you will need to press to move the shelf for Moira, then click to crouch and move under the shelf yourself. Push the next shelf forward with until an Afflicted attacks you. Slash it a few times with your knife until Claire finishes it off. Then continue to push the shelf forward until you can move past it. Continue forward and through the room where an Afflicted runs away from you. In the next room, there will be a green herb in the locker on the right and just as you leave there will be another green herb.
Move forward through some rooms, and click again to crouch under an obstacle. Then continue on to the door that looks like a garage door (I'll be calling these garage doors from here on even though there are no actual garages), and press to open it. Note that when you go through these doors, the game will automatically save, and you cannot backtrack. This isn't important here, but be aware of it as you progress through the game.
Gina will appear and grab you. You can't avoid the grab, so just walk into her as soon as you see her. You cannot open the door to the right because you need the key that we are going to pick up.
Head down some stairs, and just before you reach the door, you will see a body hanging to your left. Press to grab the keys. Just kidding! The body falls, and now we have to go down to retrieve them.
Go through the door in front of you and keep moving forward. You can't get into any of these cells yet, so just keep going until you go through a set of double doors. There are two desks in the corners of this room that will have gems in them (collecting these counts toward your 3 treasures for a medal). Move forward through the door ahead and down the ladder in front of you. Press to interact with the body on the ground and pick up the Handgun MPM. Press to switch to Moira and use to point your flashlight on the keys hanging on the middle tank above the body. Switch back to Claire and shoot them down.
Once you pick up the keys and move back toward the ladder, there will be a few Afflicted that attack you. This is the first opportunity for an achievement and progress toward some medals.
The first achievement you can get requires you to stun an enemy by pointing Moira's flashlight at it until it staggers, switch to Claire, and hit when prompted to follow up with a physical attack (it will be a roundhouse kick, any other move is not the one you want). Note that I was able to do this without purchasing any skills. There is a skill called Follow-Up that says "Claire and Barry become able to perform a follow-up." This unlocks the ability to perform different kinds of follow-ups, like ground finishes or stunning them with body shots and then performing follow-ups. The standard physical attack is available from the beginning without purchasing this skill. Even though this achievement's wording makes it sound like it is asking you to do a follow-up attack, it is not. It is asking you to do a physical attack after stunning the enemy with the flashlight. This nets you:
Now That's Teamwork!
Have Moira stun an enemy and Claire follow up with a physical attack in the main campaign.
Now be sure to do this 4 more times on the next few enemies for one of the medals on this chapter. You will also earn a medal for stunning 10 enemies with Moira's flashlight and an achievement when you stun 50 enemies:
So be sure to keep using this mechanic throughout the level. Also, you will need to kill 100 of these enemies (called Afflicted) to unlock:
They are the main enemy in the campaign, so this should come with natural progression without any grinding necessary. It appears that the enemies in Barry's campaign called Rotten count for this achievement as well, which makes sense because they are more aged versions of the Afflicted.
Another achievement that you can work on now is the Friend Indeed achievement to save your captured partner 10 times. As Moira, allow yourself to be grabbed by an enemy, then switch to Claire and shoot or stab the enemy so that he lets Moira go. I advise you to use Moira as the one getting grabbed for this because Moira can regenerate health whereas Claire will need to use healing items. So if you are going to do this on purpose for the achievement, use Moira as your bait. You will probably do this through natural progression, but if you want to quickly grind it out now, you can repeat this process 10 times to unlock:
Save your captured partner ten times in the main campaign.
In the room by the ladder where the Afflicted emerged, you will find some handgun ammo. Now go up the ladder and back the way you came. After the room with the medical equipment, you will see that the door to the right is now open. Go through there, and grab the handgun ammo and green herb on the counter. An Afflicted will come around to attack you in here, so take him out. Move forward out of the room, and two more Afflicted will attack you from the cells as you move forward and to the right. Check the fourth cell on the left for a green herb.
Go through the door and up the stairs, and use your shiny new key to unlock the door on the left. Just around the corner is the Shotgun M147S. Pick this up, but don't use it for now. By this point, you should have gotten your stun/physical attack combos, and you can focus on getting 8 headshot kills for another medal. This is more easily and efficiently done with the handgun.
Use your knife to break through the box and into the next room. This introduces you to using Moira's flashlight to find hidden objects. Use to focus the light on flashing spots until you hear a "ding!" Then you can pick up the items. There are 3 items on the shelves in the right corner: two random goodies (ammo, items, or gems) and the Crowbar, which Moira can pick up. You will need to find 6 hidden items with Moira throughout the level for a medal, so keep that in mind.
You can also use the crowbar to perform melee attacks (). You will need to kill 50 enemies with the crowbar for:
There are also two breakable boxes with goodies in the left corner. Once you have looted the room, you can interact with the door on the left, and Moira will use the crowbar to remove the board blocking your exit.
Continue forward, and there will be 3 hidden objects in the room with the garage door - one to the right of the door you enter, one straight in front of you, and one slightly to the left between the stack of boxes. Use Moira's flashlight to reveal these, and pick them up. There is also a breakable crate to the left of the garage door. When you are ready, move through the door to the next section.
Go upstairs and trigger the next cutscene. After the dialogue finishes, you can turn around to loot a crate in the back left corner (door with green light), and then turn back around to find the other open door on your left. Inside this cell is a gem that you can shoot down from the ceiling.
Moving forward into the next room, you will find the Detention Center Map on the desk to the left, which will give you a mini map in the top right corner of your HUD. Ahead of you is a door that is missing a Gear Kog (yep, they spell it that way), so we will need to find that.
Turn right, and reveal another hidden item behind a ladder straight ahead of you. Now go through the door to the right. There is a breakable crate at the end of this hallway. Turn around from the crate, and go through the door that is now on your right. You'll notice the Gear Kog stuck in the spike machine in this room, but you can't get to it yet. We need to turn on the power.
Moira's flashlight will reveal a hidden object in the left corner when you enter this room. There is a broken ladder in this room, and you need to hoist Moira up (). As Moira, there will be a Military Box to the right through the doorway. Press and then follow the instructions for this little mini-game/puzzle. You need to move the dot with until it turns orange, then slowly pull or so that the dot becomes smaller. You want to make sure that the dot stays orange until it finds the "lock" to click in place. If it turns red, let go of the trigger and move the dot slightly to try another spot. The longer it stays orange, the closer you are to the right location. You will need to do this twice to unlock this box. There will be a Handgun Ammo Case in this box. Note that this is the first of three military boxes that you need to find on this level for a medal.
Now, turn around and move forward and to the left. You will be able to unlock a door to your left here so that Claire can progress.
Switch to Claire and pick up the tourniquet on the shelf to your left. On the shelf to your right is a Parts Box and a workbench. You can use the workbench to put upgrades into your weapons. Upgrades come from parts boxes like the one you just found. This one should be Damage Lv. 1. You can go ahead and put this into your handgun. Select the gun you want to upgrade, then select the part you want to add. For future reference, all parts aren't used in all weapons, but the icons on the bottom left of your screen when you highlight a part indicate which weapons it can be used with. After you upgrade your gun, switch to Moira and head right and through the door to the next area.
Go through the door in front of you, and break the crate around the bars to your left. As you move down the hallway, an Afflicted with red pus on his head will attack you from the right. If you kill this type of enemy with a headshot, note that it leaves red pus on the floor. You can focus Moira's flashlight on this to dissolve it, making sure that it does not turn into an exploding Cyst that Barry will have to deal with in his episode.
There is a hidden item in the second room on the right. Head through the next door, and two Afflicted (one regular, one pus-head) will attack you from the right. Remember that you need 8 headshot kills in this level for a medal as you move through these next areas. There is a hidden item on a shelf in the room where the Afflicted came from, and there is a tourniquet on a small shelf right outside of that room.
As you move forward and to the right, an Afflicted will jump through the window. This is an opportunity to make progress toward one of the more irritating achievements, Unfriendly Skies, where you need to shoot down 30 Afflicted in mid-jump. Switch to the shotgun, and kill this guy as soon as he jumps in through the window. If you kill him fast enough (it took two shots for me with no upgrades in the base shotgun, but that was still fast enough), it should count for the achievement, even if he touches the ground. You can keep reloading the checkpoint if you want to grind this out here. 30 of these kills will net you:
You will find another hidden object straight ahead by some rubble and one to the left of the rubble. Go through the door on the right, and there will be a hidden object to your right as well as an Exploding Bottle on a shelf to your right. This is a "sub-weapon," which you will use for another medal in this episode. You need to defeat 8 enemies with sub-weapons, so keep in mind that you need to wait for an opportunity to take out multiple enemies with one bottle. There will be an excellent spot coming up, so hold on to this.
In the back corner of this room, opposite the exit door, you will find the second Military Crate. Use Moira to unlock it just like you did on the first one, but this one is easier with only one lock. There should be another Parts Box inside. Head out the exit door and down the stairs to the right.
As you go downstairs, click the to turn off Moira's flashlight, then switch to Claire and press to crouch. We are going to stealth kill the next 3 enemies for another medal. Sneak forward while crouched into the next room and move behind the Ironhead. Pull when you get the prompt to perform a stealth kill. Then move around to the right behind the Afflicted and repeat the process on him. Move to the left to take out the pus-head Afflicted in the same fashion. That's all 3 stealth kills done! These also count toward the 20 stealth kills you need for:
Now you can stand up and move through the door on the left. On a shelf to your right, you will find another Exploding Bottle. In the next room you will find the Rusty Key. You should also go ahead and push the box of random trash out from in front of the door by moving to the right of it and pushing it out of the way with .
Backtrack to the room where we performed our stealth kills, and use the Rusty Key to unlock the door on the opposite wall to the right. In this next room, there is an opportunity for two medals as well as an achievement.
Run around the trash compacter area until you have 5+ spiders, and toss the bottle (hold to aim and to throw the bottle). If it kills at least 5, you will unlock:
Fish in a Barrel
Defeat five enemies with one exploding bottle or one firebomb bottle in the main campaign.
If you didn't get it, reload your checkpoint to try again. You can also get the medal for killing 8 enemies with sub-weapons here as well as killing 10 giant whip spiders. There is also a hidden item in one of the corners in the trash compactor.
When you are done exterminating spiders, boost Moira up to the opposite side. As Moira, move into the next room and pull the switch to turn on the power. An Afflicted will burst out of a room to your left, and the blades on those busts will start spinning. Run past him towards Claire.
When you get back to Claire, you will automatically switch to her so that you can help her escape the trash compacter. Climb up the moving ledge on the left where there is a gap and then climb up and out of the compacter area. Go back into the room where we performed our stealth kills, and be careful of the rotating blades that are now powered up. Go through the door to the room where we picked up the Rusty Key, and beware that an Ironhead will drop from the ceiling. These guys are tough, so I recommend using the stun/physical attack combo, and shooting him with the shotgun while he is on the ground. Or run past him since you have already moved the box of debris, whatever you'd like to do.
Go through the door, and you will be back in the area where you need to place the Gear Kog. Be careful of the spinning blade traps and the enemies (a pus-head Afflicted and an Ironhead). Try to lure these enemies into the blades for two blade kills. Remember you can stun them to make them stand still or kick them into the blades.
Go through the door on the opposite side and back into the Gear Kog room. You can now use the switch to move the machine and grab the Gear. You can also visit the work bench in this room to equip your new part (Firing Rate Lv. 1). I'd suggest putting this into the handgun as well as this will be your main weapon.
Now you can finally go back and place the Gear Kog to open the gate. When you do this, more Afflicted will spawn, so be warned. There will be a short cutscene showing the Afflicted being released from their cells. When you proceed into the next room, there is a bust in the middle and a crank on the right. Do NOT turn the crank. It activates the fire bust. Leave it alone, and use these enemies to get the kills that you need for your medals (10 headshots, 8 enemies killed by blades, 10 stuns, and/or 5 stun/physical attack combos). There are 2 Ironheads and 4 Afflicted that spawn. A good tip is to crouch underneath the rotating blades in the corner of the fire bust room. This will lure the enemies into it while you remain safe.
You can loot the now-open cells for a few more items (hidden items in the second cell on the right, the sixth cell on the right, and third cell on the left). There is also a green herb in the fire bust room.
Switch to Moira to use her crowbar to open the door in the back of the room. You should switch back to Claire as she works on the door to protect her because some enemies will continue to spawn (may vary by difficulty, but there are two Afflicted that keep respawning on Casual and Normal). You can use these enemies to get any of the last kills you may need. Then go through the door without activating the fire bust, and you will unlock:
Who Needs Fire?
Escape from the detention center in Claire's Episode One without using the flame-thrower bust.
Move forward for another bit of dialogue, and pick up the green herb in the field in front of you. Continue along the path and open the gate. To the left just before the bridge, you will find your last Military Crate. Use Moira to open it as before, and grab another Parts Box. Now head across the bridge, pressing when prompted.
Head into the door, and you may use the work bench to add your latest part (Quick Load Lv. 1) to your weapon of choice (as usual, I'll go with the handgun). There will be one final crate to the right of the broadcasting equipment. Press at the broadcasting equipment to end Claire's part of this Episode.
You can now use the BP you collected to unlock skills in the Skill Settings menu. I would suggest unlocking the first level of Crouch Power, Dashing Knife, and Follow Up so that you can do follow-up attacks for a medal in Barry's episode and to work toward your 50 kills with follow-up attacks for:
Most of the other skills are useful, but I would recommend unlocking skills like Batter Up, Light is Might, Crowbar Finisher, Laying Bricks, Sixth Sense, and Brick Finisher to do more damage with Moira and Natalia and to gain BP from kills with those characters. This will help you when going for crowbar and brick kills as well as flashlight stuns. Hurler will increase the power of your sub-weapons, which is helpful when trying to get sub-weapon kills for medals. Evade, Evade Extension, and Evade Recovery are all useful skills when going through Countdown Mode because they will increase your speed when dodging past enemies. Quick Knife and Hair Splitter could be useful when going for the knife-only run for Cutting Edge.
I would steer clear of the Unholstered skill until after you do the Cutting Edge achievement. Some have reported that they have gotten the achievement after purchasing this skill, but others have had difficulty. You may run in to trouble if you switch back to a character who is firing their weapon as you switch. My advice is to play it safe and wait to purchase this one after you have the achievement in hand. Other than that, any of the skills are fair game.
Another thing to note is that all of the BP you have been earning (through completing levels, achievements, medals, and challenges as well as picking up gems) counts toward the cumulative 50,000 total BP you need to earn for the achievement:
Note that you do not need to save up 50,000 at once, just earn that much over the course of the game. So feel free to spend your points as you earn them. You will need to save 2000 BP to purchase Countdown and Invisible Mode after you finish Barry's episode, so make sure to save some after you finish the next part.
One thing to know about Barry's episodes is that they take place after Claire's and can be affected by some of the things you do during Claire's episode. An example in this episode is the fire bust section. If you leave the fire bust on in Claire's episode, it will be on in Barry's episode and will block your path. Because we chose to leave it off for the achievement, this means that it is off in Barry's episode, and we can get through the door a little easier. Things like this are important for some of the later modes, and we will be revisiting this concept later. For now, it's just something to be aware of.
We kick off this half of the episode with Barry and Natalia, and you will be very happy that Barry decided to let Natalia come along, as her ability to see enemies through walls is very useful. You can use this ability just like Moira's flashlight, and you use to point out hidden items and enemies. Also note that enemies that are highlighted yellow are not yet aggressive (and are sometimes dead), and enemies that are highlighted red have already seen you and are ready to eat your face!
19:15, 23:32 Defeated 5 Revenant by only hitting their weak spots
18:22 Didn't fire a gun in the detention center control area
18:05, 25:35 Hit enemies with Natalia's brick 15 times
15:52 Defeated 2 enemies with a follow up attack
15:20, 16:50, 23:32 Defeated 8 enemies with sub weapons
16:30 Defeated 6 enemies using the stealth attacks
14:05 Defeated 6 enemies with the knife
18:35, 21:53 Opened 2 gimmick boxes
16:05 Found 6 hidden items with Natalia
19:55 Escaped the darkness of the forest, starting from the detour hut, within 40 seconds
So let's get this show on the road! Barry is already equipped with a handgun, assault rifle, magnum, and knife, so you have access to these tools from the very beginning. If you go back onto the boat, there is a breakable crate with some goodies, so grab that.
Head forward and take the path around the cliffs to the left. At the end of the path is a breakable barrel with loot. Turn around from said barrel and climb up the ledge by pressing . There is another crate here. When Barry says "Watch out" there will be three spiders that you can knife before climbing up the ledge to your left. Continue to the left, learn to turn your flashlight on with , and kill 4 more spiders in front of you. Keep moving up toward the prison, and you will encounter 5 more spiders heading up the ramp to the left or stairs to the right (they both go to the same location). As you approach the garage door, another 3 or so spiders will crawl down. Head through the garage door and into the facility.
In the room to your left there will be a red herb and an item in the desk drawer. Just outside this room is a green herb. You can combine items by going into your inventory () and pressing . Select the item that you want to make, and if you have the proper ingredients, you just press to create it. You can create 3 green herbs by combining one green herb and one red herb. Do this now. You can see that there is also a firebomb bottle sub-weapon available, but we will need an empty bottle and alcohol to create this item. We will be keeping an eye out for these items, as we need sub-weapon kills for a medal.
Move forward through the hallway and through the blue door. There will be a good opportunity for an achievement here. Switch to the magnum (), and as you move through the next room, you will be attacked by 4 Rotten (slow-moving zombies in combat gear). Try to move back so that you line up at least two of them and then shoot them in the head with the magnum. If you lined this up correctly, you will unlock:
Line 'Em Up!
Defeat two enemies with one shot in the main campaign.
If you unlocked it, you can reload your checkpoint to save the ammo and you can kill these enemies with knife attacks to work toward your medal for 6 knife kills. I do not believe that the spiders at the beginning count for knife kills, so try to kill 6 other enemies with basic knife attacks (not stealth kills or follow ups, those will be separate). Alternately, this spot is perfect for grinding follow-up kills. You will need to have purchased the Follow-Up skill or you will not be able to perform follow-up attacks. If you have this skill, you will be able to do follow-up shoulder charges when an enemy is stunned (slash them a couple of times to trigger this) or finish them on the ground when they are knocked over. You need to do two of these kills for a medal. Sometimes, slashing while walking backwards seems to stun enemies quicker. You have these 4 guys here, so you can reload the checkpoint for:
Fudge Them Up!
Defeat 50 enemies with physical attacks in the main campaign.
To your left, around some boxes, you will find another crate. Leave this room and keep moving forward. Vault over a desk, and move through a set of double doors.
Now you will be introduced to Natalia's pointing mechanics that we discussed earlier. Switch to Nat and point at the shiny object in front of you. Crouch and move to the end of the hallway. There is another hidden item behind the boxes. We will need to find 6 hidden items throughout the level for another medal, so keep an eye out.
Switch back to Barry and be sure you are crouched with the flashlight off. Move through the doorway to stealth kill the Rotten in front of you. We will need 6 stealth kills for a medal, and it is easiest to do all of them right now. Move to the right, and use Nat to see the 3 enemies through the wall. Switch to Barry and move up to the corner so that you can see the enemies around the corner, but they can't see you. When the one who is patrolling is closest to you and turns around, make your move. You need to do this quickly, because if you don't get the Rotten who is moving before he moves too far in front of the other one on the left, you will be seen. Kill the moving Rotten first, then the one to the left, then the one farthest away. Now you can loot the area. There is a crate behind the three Rotten you just killed and a hidden item to the left where you entered this room.
Crouch and move up the stairs to stealth kill the Rotten at the top. Look ahead of you to the barred window, but don't move too close yet. When you see the Rotten behind the window turn around and start walking away from you, move forward to the doorway of the room where he is patrolling. Peek around the corner, and when he turns away from you, move in for your last stealth kill. There is an item in the drawer in this room as well.
Go back out of this room, and kill the other three Rotten in this area (2 patrolling and one lying on the floor). This is a good opportunity for knife kills or follow-up kills if you need them. Move around to the left side of the room, and notice the blue footprints on the floor. To the left of the footprints there will be a crate beside a Rotten corpse. Move this crate with Barry ( to pick up, to put down) to the spot where the footprints are leading. There is a hidden item to the left of the Rotten corpse. Now climb up the crate and boxes onto the upper level. Go through the corridor and the garage door ahead.
In the next room, grab the Control Room Key hanging in front of you. There is a hidden item in the back of this room. Use Nat to crawl through the hole to the right. There are a couple of bricks on the ground here (highlighted in light blue). Pick one up, and go up to the Rotten lying in front of the door. You can throw it like a sub-weapon (hold and pull to throw) or just walk up to an enemy and pull to hit him. I like using the latter method to get brick hits for medals, but any combination of hits and throws should work. If you walk up to the Rotten on the floor with brick in hand, you can pull 3 times to hit him before the brick breaks and he dies. You will need to kill 20 enemies with bricks for:
Defeat 20 enemies with a brick as Natalia in the main campaign.
So congrats on your first one! If you wish, you can grind this achievement here by reloading the checkpoint. Pick up the gunpowder off the shelf to the left and unlock the door for Barry.
Use Barry to push the box of debris out of the way. There is a hidden item to the right of the box, between the wall and the leaning shelf. Don't worry about the Kog room for now. Go through the door to the left and through the next door at the end of the hallway. There will be a brick in front of you to the left. Use it on some of the Rotten that come out of the cells to your right and ahead. There may also be some exploding Cysts on the floor (if you got a headshot on the pus-head Afflicted in Claire's episode and did not dissolve it with Moira's flashlight), so use Nat to move towards it and quickly walk backward. Her health will regenerate if she is hurt by the dastardly goop. You can also throw a brick at the goop to trigger it to explode from a safe distance or shoot it with Barry's gun if you feel like using ammo.
There may also be more Cysts through the next door, so be careful. There will be another couple of bricks in this area that you can use on the Rotten in the room to the right. If you go down the corridor to the right and into the big room there will be another brick and another Rotten. Go down the first set of stairs (to the left of the entrance to this area) and deal with another Rotten at the bottom. You can climb through a hole at the front of the control room with Nat and turn off the power and the annoying blades. There is a hidden item in the left corner of the control room.
Leave the control room, and head through the door to your right. There will be two Rotten on your way to the door. As you exit, go to the alcove to the right, behind the now-stilled blade mechanism, and climb up to grab the Parts Box. There is also a hidden item under the desk where the Detention Facility Map was in Claire's episode.
Now, we could just leave through the door past the dormant fire bust, but we have a couple more items to pick up. Just be sure you do not fire your guns in this area because this is tied to another medal. You may use your knife freely, just don't fire a weapon. There are a couple of Rotten milling about, so knife them, brick them, or avoid them, and go upstairs to the Control Room. In this room, there is a chest on the floor called a Gimmick Box that Natalia can open just like Moira opens the Military Boxes. Unlock this one to find a Parts Box. You will need to open both of the Gimmick Boxes on this level for a medal.
If you need a few more kills, you can use the switch in the Control Room to open the cells on the upper level. There are a few Rotten in these as well as a couple of loot items. There is a breakable crate in the back left cell at the bottom as well. Also, if you did activate the fire bust in Claire's episode, you would need to turn on the power so that Nat could follow the blue feet to a hidden tunnel in the far right cell on the upper level. This tunnel would lead her to the fire bust room, and she could turn it off, allowing you to progress. If you don't need to do this, it's best to just leave the switch alone.
There is a Rare Parts Box on the blade mechanism to the left of the fire bust. You can now go use the workbench in the Kog room if you wish. You can put the upgrades (Capacity Lv. 1, Damage Lv. 1, and Damage Lv. 3) into the weapon of your choosing (handgun for me).
When you are ready, head out of the door past the fire bust. Make your way to the bridge, and grab the hidden item under the stairs leading to the bridge. Since we cannot go across the bridge, we need to go through the door to the left. Use Nat to crawl through a hole to the left of the door (there is a hidden item to the left of the hole), grab a brick, and smash the chain on the door to let Barry through. There is a crate next to the door on the other side.
Continue through the wooded area to a place where you press to slide down. In the next area you will have a short cutscene. When you have control, go into the small shack on the right to find a crate. In the main building, you will find a green herb and some assault rifle ammo to the left and a hidden item under the small shelf opposite the exit. When you move toward the exit with Barry, you will have another cutscene. Try to open the door again, and you will have to mash repeatedly until you have your first encounter with a Revenant. For a medal, you will need to kill 5 of these by hitting only their weak spots. Switch to Nat to locate its weak spot (the glowing part), and then shoot only that area with Barry. The handgun can be your best bet for these, as the assault rifle has some bullet spray and Magnum ammo is precious. I personally did these kills with the assault rifle. Back away from the Revenant and try to take clean shots. It should not take many to destroy the weak spot, especially if you put that Damage Lv. 3 upgrade on your handgun. Once he is dealt with, you can finally open the door.
You will encounter several more Revenants throughout this level, and something to note is that other than the 5 you need for the medal, you can also work toward shooting the weapon arms of 30 Revenants for:
Destroy 30 Revenants' weapon arms.
The ones with weapon arms have saws strapped to one of their arms. It appears that the ones with small blades on their arms do not count. A few shots should destroy the arm, so once you are done with the 5 weak spot only kills, you can work on this achievement. All Revenant kills count toward the 100 kills you need for:
Move forward through the woods, and when you near a light on the ground, you will get a checkpoint. This is the beginning of the woods section that you need to get through in 40 seconds for a medal. I would recommend saving this for a second playthrough, because we also need to get a Gimmick Box in these woods, and it is impossible to do both in one playthrough. We will go ahead and get the Gimmick Box now and learn the level, then come back for the 40 seconds medal later.
Behind the light is a breakable crate. Move straight through the woods past the light, and you will soon come to a hanging light with a Revenant patrolling beside it. Locate the weak spot and take this one out for your second weak spot kill. There is a crate beneath the hanging light. Hug the right hand side of the area past the hanging light, and another Revenant will crawl out at you, ripe for the killing. Now go back to the hanging light and move forward hugging the left hand side. There will be a hidden item under a fallen log. Continue forward from here, and you should see a Gimmick Box at the base of a tree. It is a bit left of the center of the path, and if you make it to the building ahead with the light, you have gone too far. Unlock the Gimmick Box with Nat to find a gem.
Now head forward to the building with the light. There is a barrel in here. Then you can move to the door to exit this area, which you will likely come to despise when trying to get through here in 40 seconds. But for now, it's cool.
In the next area, you can explore the building to find two hidden items and some assault rifle ammo. Go back outside and use a brick or your knife to break the lock on the gate to the left. Go through, loot the crate, and press to climb down.
Crouch and turn off your flashlight. You can see two Revenants ahead and the game points out a Fire Bottle behind an object in front of you. This weapon is great against the Revenants, and if you are going for your medal for 8 sub-weapon kills, this is a great spot to get a couple of kills with one bottle. I would recommend going for this medal on your second playthrough though, because you don't have many bottles at this point. Since you will need a second playthrough anyway for the 40 seconds medal, you might as well save your bottles on this one so that you can use them the second time through. You can use these two Revenants to clean up your last weak spot kills instead. I'd recommend getting a few extra weak spot kills anyway, just to be sure you get that medal out of the way.
To the left of the double doors, there is a path leading to a building where you can pick up a gem on the shelf. Move the crate out of the way to reveal a hole that Nat can crawl through to unlock the door. Then move the crate under the shelf in this room so that you can climb up and claim the Parts Box. There is also a green herb in this room. Now head back to the double doors and exit this area.
Move ahead to the next building. Taped next to the door, you will find the Forest Map. On the table next to the door is an empty bottle and alcohol, which you can combine to create another Fire Bottle. There is also a hidden item to the left. Inside, you can find 2 Tourniquets, handgun ammo, and a workbench. Feel free to put your upgrade (Quick Load Lv. 1) into your weapon of choice. Handgun for me, of course.
Leave the building, move forward, and climb down the stairs. The lumber yard is fairly big, but there aren't many items around here. There is a hidden item by some barrels in front of the building on the right. A second hidden item is by some debris to the left of the chained gate, and if you turn around from this location, you can see another by some barrels in the center of the area. There are also bricks all over the place in case you need more brick hits.
Approach the chained gate with Barry and press to initiate a cutscene. After this, a Revenant will break through the boards on your right, and another will come at you from the left. After dealing with them, you can go through the path our Revenant friend made for us on the right.
Another Revenant will be waiting for you around the corner. Deal with him, and proceed to the building. There is a crate on the porch and a hidden item to the left of the shelf inside. Turn on the generator, and you can break the chain on the door opposite the stairs for a slightly quicker path back to the main area.
Head over to the other building (the entrance is around some logs and barrels to the right). Inside the first room of this building is another Revenant and handgun ammo on the right. You can then move through the door on the right for an easy path to the exit, or go through the door on the left to fight another Revenant. This one should have a saw weapon arm that you can destroy for the Disarmed achievement.
You can find a hidden item at the end of the little hallway to the left of the exit door. Then exit this building. There will be a crate in front of you when you go outside. Pull the switch to use the crane to smash through the door and hear an amazing Barry line. You can climb up the stairs and boxes and jump down to get back to the main area instead of going back through the building. If you would like to farm Revenant kills, they will keep spawning in the area until you trigger the cutscene by moving toward the gate. One will spawn through the boards on the right, another in the center, and a third to the left. I farmed here for a while, but none of these Revenants seemed to have weapon arms, so it's possible that only regular Revenants spawn here. When you are ready to get out of here, move to the gate.
After the cutscene, walk forward and climb down the cliff. Enter the building, use the workbench if you really want to, and interact with the broadcasting equipment to end the episode. Completing this episode unlocks the achievement:
Completing this episode will also unlock Countdown and Invisible mode for Episode 1.
Ok, let's proceed to clean up all of the medals. First, some general information about medals. You do NOT need to get all of the medals in one playthrough, but you DO need to fulfill the requirement for each individual medal in one playthrough. For example, you can get the 10 knife kills medal in a separate playthrough from the 3 stealth kills, but you need to get all 10 knife kills in the same playthrough and all 3 stealth kills in the same playthrough. You cannot get 6 knife kills in one playthrough and 4 in another. You can go to your episode select screen and hit on the episode to check your medals for each. If the medal and text are highlighted, you have done this medal. If the medal and text are faded/grayed out, you have not completed this medal. At the end of each episode, you will see a medal screen. If the medal is highlighted (bright and not faded), you got the medal in that playthrough. If the medal is faded but the text is bright white, you got that medal in a previous playthrough but not in the one you just completed. Your goal is for all of the text to be white. That's when you know you have done all of the medals across all of your playthroughs. Medals can be done on any difficulty, but I recommend Casual for less frustration.
If you would like to clean up the medals that you missed on your first run, just quit to the main menu, select main campaign, and then episode select. Choose the episode that you need to replay, and begin that level with all of the items you had in your inventory when you last played.
If you followed the guide above, you should only need to clean up the sub-weapon kills and get through the forest in under 40 seconds on Barry's episode. You should have 2 fire bottles in your inventory, so you can use these to get some kills early in the level and pick up 2 more as you move through the later sections if you need a few more kills. Some good areas to get sub-weapon kills are the first 4 Rotten you encounter, the group of 3 that we stealth killed in the room after you first use Natalia's powers, and the group of 2 Revenants where you picked up your first fire bottle. Of course, other enemies can always be herded up together, these are just spots that consistently worked well for me.
For getting through the forest in under 40 seconds, I highly recommend that you reload your checkpoint in the woods so that you know exactly when the clock starts. Then use a timer or clock with a second hand to count your seconds as the game gives you no indication of whether you got the medal until the end of the level. If you are not very close to the door by a count of 35, reload your checkpoint. You can use either Natalia or Barry here, and different people have had success with both of them. Some like to use Nat because she cannot be grabbed by the Revenants. Others like Barry because he runs faster. Personally, I prefer Barry. If you get grabbed, reload checkpoint. Check the video guide below to watch my path through the woods, and turn up the brightness on your game so that you can see better. Good luck, and don't get discouraged. This medal is frustrating, but doable.
When you get all of the medals, you unlock:
Next, let's get our knife-only run out of the way. You need to start at the beginning, so go to episode select and choose Claire's Episode One. You can NOT do this on your first playthrough because you will have to fire your gun to get the keys at the beginning. In future playthroughs the keys will be on a body on the floor, so be sure to choose from episode select. This achievement has been notoriously finicky for people. The description says "Clear Episode One only using the knife." Here are a few rules: Do NOT fire your gun under any circumstance EVER. I have heard that if you have the perk for your partner to fire when you are not controlling him/her (Unholstered) that it is fine, but to be safe, I would recommend completing this before buying that skill. If you have already purchased it, I can confirm that you can still get the achievement by only switching to Moira or Natalia when absolutely necessary, trying to clear out all enemies before switching, and switching back to Claire/Barry before the AI fires a shot. Do NOT use Moira's crowbar or Natalia's brick. Do NOT aim Moira's flashlight or point with Natalia. In fact, do NOT use at all, to be safe. Do NOT perform stealth kills (even though it uses the knife, it is classed as a different attack). Do NOT perform a follow-up attack.
TIP: hold down to attack instead of tapping it. This will do a constant slash (basic knife attack) and will prevent you from accidentally doing a follow-up. To be safe, you may also want to adhere to my personal rules (they may be crazy, but they worked for me). Although I did not pick up items or heal in my successful run shown below, I have since played through again and confirmed that you can pick up items and use healing items and still get the achievement. You can also shake off enemies with if you are grabbed. I have heard that if your partner uses a healing item, that's okay, so it may be a good idea to get some herbs and put them in your partner's inventory before starting a new game (although my partners were fairly incompetent with healing me, even when my health was quite low).
Here's what you can do: Use the basic knife attack (obviously). Run past enemies. Use Moira's crowbar ONLY to open the two crowbar doors. Use a brick ONCE to break the chain on the door. This playthrough is essentially the same as the one in the campaign walkthrough, just with the requirement of not using any weapons other than the knife, so you can use the same path through the game. If you would like to see an example of this being done, the video below shows my successful run:
When you complete both Claire's and Barry's Episode One only using the knife, you will unlock:
Now that our knife run is taken care of, we can focus on the alternate modes. You will need to unlock these by going to your Extras menu, selecting Rewards, and buying them with BP. I suggest tackling Countdown Mode first, so let's talk about some basics for this mode. Your time will decrease constantly. Killing enemies gets you a few more seconds, but in general, if you can't kill them quickly you usually lose as many seconds stopping to fight them as you gain. Try to either use your more powerful weapons/attacks or just run past enemies when possible.
Larger enemies give more time, but also take more time to kill. Stealth kills/ground kills are good for gaining quick time. The blue hourglasses add 60 seconds each, and the yellow hourglasses reset your clock to 3:00. These yellow ones don't add 3:00 to your time, it just resets to 3:00. Use these wisely. Try to wait until you are running low on time to hit the yellow ones to maximize the time gained. You can shoot them, melee them, throw a brick at them, or throw a bottle that explodes near then. Anything that hits them will work. There are a lot of hourglasses in the detention facility in Claire's episode, but you cannot leave them for Barry because they will disappear. Using the fire bust at the end of Claire's episode will net you a lot of time, but turning this on makes you do more running around in Barry's episode, and there are a lot fewer hourglasses, so if you have time at the end of Claire's I would recommend NOT using the fire bust if you can avoid it to make your time in Barry's part easier. It can be done using the bust though, as you will see below. Just be aware of how one episode affects the other, and make decisions accordingly. Here's an example of how I made it through:
Run through the beginning sections until you get to the part where you grab the knife. You can stop for a couple of seconds to pick up the handgun ammo in the room after you break through the glass. You want to try to keep pickups to a minimum, but you will probably want to pick up at least some of the ammo and healing items as you progress. Continue through the tutorial sections, and you will be able to hit your first blue hourglass to the right after you push the shelf.
You can pick up the green herb from the floor on the right as you move through the next set of rooms. After Gina wastes several precious seconds, move ahead and examine the body with the keys. Then run forward through a few hallways and pick up your second blue hourglass in the room through the double doors.
Your next blue hourglass is down the ladder in the room with the keys. You must examine the body to pickup the handgun, and you cannot shoot down the keys until you switch to Moira and shine the light on them.
Ignore the infected and climb up the ladder and go through the door. You may have to wait a bit for Moira to catch up, and sometimes you can get unlucky and she gets grabbed. If this happens, you can either shoot her attacker quickly or reload your checkpoint.
After heading through the door, you can pick the herb in the room if you want and evade the incoming enemies and run back to the door in Gina's room to head to the next section.
Pick up the shotgun and item from the crate in your path. You can also pick up some of the goodies in the next room. Make sure you shine the light on the crowbar and pick it up so you can open the door out of this room. To the right of the door is another blue hourglass.
Through the door is a yellow hourglass, but wait! If you have a bit of time, you can run around behind the stairs and break a crate for another item (hopefully ammo) and move forward to trigger the cutscene before you hit the hourglass to maximize your time. I'd wait until Alex is done talking, if possible, because you will move more slowly while she talks.
Move through the door on the right, and there is another crate straight ahead. Boost Moira up in the next room, and run around to open the door for Claire and run to the next door as Moira to save some seconds. Keep going and either kill or evade the pus-head guy. Run down the stairs to the left, and go through the room on the right. Pick up the exploding bottle and the rusty key. There is a blue hourglass in here that I'd recommend picking up now and moving the debris so you can just run through here later.
Backtrack and go to the trash compacter. Don't bother killing the spiders, as they only give you 2 seconds. Turn on the power with Moira, and hit the blue hourglass in the power room. Switch back to Claire as soon as you can, and run back to the room where you picked up the key. Be careful of the spinning blades and the enemies. They will most likely get killed by the blades, but one might get by, so be prepared to evade him.
Return to the cog room, pull the switch, and pick up the cog. Run back, place it, and crouch under the blades in the corner by the door. This will allow you to lure most of the infected in for blade kills and lots of seconds. Once you have killed a good number of them, move Moira out to start opening the door, and protect her with Claire. The shotgun does a good job here. When Moira opens the door, move on out!
There is a blue hourglass in front of you as you exit the building. There is also a green herb on your left as you walk through the open area. There is another blue hourglass right before the bridge. Now you just run to the end of the level and use the microphone. (In the video, I left the last few hourglasses because I was testing whether they would appear for Barry. They do not, so feel free to pick them up.)
Grab the crate to your right on the boat (usually has ammo), and move forward along the path, breaking crates if you so desire (probably a good idea). After you get inside, pick up the goodies from the room to the left and hit the blue hourglass. Try to quickly kill the four Rotten in the next room with headshots.
Use Natalia to pick up a few shinies, and use stealth as much as possible in the next section to pick up seconds and avoid complications. Keep progressing as normal, killing enemies when you need to. The next blue hourglass is right after you use Natalia to crawl through a hole and unlock a door. It is after Barry moves some debris.
Be careful of the red pus on the floor if you killed the pus-head guy(s). Use Natalia to crawl through the hole and turn off the power. If you left the fire bust off, you can move straight through to the exit. If you didn't, you will need to go to the control room, open the cells, use Natalia to go through the cell the blue footprints lead to, down a tunnel (there is a blue hourglass down here), and to the fire bust room to turn it off.
Either way, once you move outside there will be a blue hourglass in front of you. There is another blue hourglass past the door that Natalia opens with a brick. Keep moving forward, and there is yet another blue hourglass when you help Natalia down a hill.
Move into the cabin, pick up goodies on the way to the door, press on the door as Barry once, but stop and change to Natalia. Walk and look to the ceiling on the right and he will drop down quickly. Find his weak spot, kill him, and exit. There will be another blue hourglass right outside. Run through the woods (I'd recommend using Natalia because she cannot be grabbed). There is a blue hourglass right before the door to exit this section. If you are using Natalia, there is a brick right next to it that you can use to hit it without switching characters.
Pick the firebomb bottle, ignore the Revenants and rush to the door. There is a blue hourglass by the next building.
Inspect the chains to trigger the next section. Kill or evade the Revenants as efficiently as possible as you move to the right to turn on the generator and again to the left to move the logs. The Revenants are worth 20 seconds each, so kill them in their weak spots if you're low on time.
There is a blue hourglass as you exit the log section. Now all you need to do is run to the end of the level.
When you complete both parts of Episode One in Countdown Mode, you will unlock:
Next up is Invisible Mode. The difficulty is set to Survival, and enemies are invisible until you shine the light on them or point with Natalia (or hit them). For this playthrough, you will likely be using Moira and Natalia most of the time and switching to Claire/Barry when you need to kill things. Be aware that you can run past enemies. Use the fire bust if you like, but be aware that some enemies will probably get through because they have more health. Be ready to take them out. Here's how I did this Episode:
Honestly, this isn't very different from playing the level normally. By now you should have a pretty good idea of where the spawns are, and if you forget you can always reference the original walkthrough above for enemy placement and items.
I would recommend using the flashlight to stun enemies and use melee attacks to conserve ammo as the enemies take more damage to kill on this difficulty. Be forewarned that enemies often do not die with one stab on the ground, so you may need to repeat the stun/melee a couple of times per enemy. If there are two or more enemies at a time, use your guns to take them down as trying to run around stunning them is less effective, and you lose track of where they all are.
Playing through slowing and methodically tends to work. Speedrunning past most enemies is also an effective strategy. Also, using the environment to help you when possible is a good idea (e.g., using the blades to kill enemies rather than fight them). Here are a few tips for some of the trouble spots:
When you pick up the keys with Claire, move up the ladder and through the door as quickly as you can. It is really easy to get mobbed in that room, so getting out fast is well worth ignoring the couple of items you can get from the rooms.
I'd recommend you stealth kill the 3 guys in the room with the blades before turning on the power. Memorize their placement (left, right, left), and sneak up on them (remember to turn Moira's flashlight off). Also be sure to move the debris out from in front of the door in the room with the rusty key so that you can run through here and evade the enemies on your way out.
Hide under the blades in the fire bust room. Wait under there until Infected stop running into the blades for a little while. Try to get both Claire and Moira under the blades to be sure you are luring everything. Once they seem to have stopped, go out to open the door with Moira, and keep Claire under the blades. In this part, the Infected seemed to be attracted to Claire and left Moira alone while she unbarred the door. If they do attack her, pop out to dispatch them with your shotgun and then retreat to the blades as you won't know when they are coming while Moira is occupied. You could also use the fire bust here, but on this difficulty some Infected and Ironheads are still able to get through, and it makes it tougher for Barry's part, so I would recommend leaving the fire bust alone and using the blades in the corner instead.
In the first room with the Rotten in Barry's episode, I'd recommend using the Assault Rifle because it will help you take down the multiple enemies quicker.
With the first Revenant start evading immediately and back out of the cabin where you will have more room to maneuver.
In the woods, either move slowly and kill each of the Revenants separately or just run. I only had to deal with about 3 in that area.
In the logging area, try to keep moving around the area if you can when the Revenants get close. If you can hit a Revenant with a brick, it will knock it over and reveal the weak spot, so that can be very helpful. You can also try to evade the last few enemies if you are running low on ammo.
After completing both parts of Episode One, you'll unlock:
There are a whole host of achievements related to killing enemies and performing certain actions. You should unlock a lot of these as you are playing, but some will probably require some extra work. Note that these are all cross-episode achievements, so it is absolutely acceptable (recommended, in fact) for you to move on to the other episodes rather than grind these out in Episode One because most of them will unlock through natural progression. I'm going to list them here, though, because they are technically tied to Episode One, and all are achievable without buying Episodes 2-4.
Kill 100 Afflicted (the standard enemies in Claire's campaign) to unlock:
Kill 100 enemies with the knife across campaigns to unlock:
Perform 50 follow-up attacks (stun them with the flashlight, throw a brick at them, or hit them with body shots until they stagger), then hit when prompted to knock them down. This only counts if they die, so you should also hit when they are on the ground to finish them off. You can do the ground finisher with Claire or Moira. This should also count when you do the shoulder charge follow-up attack with Barry because it kills the enemy. Do this 50 times to unlock:
Kill 20 enemies with stealth attacks (when prompted to hit when you are behind an unaware enemy) to unlock:
Save your captured partner (when they are grabbed and in an animation where they are struggling to get away, shoot, stab, or otherwise knock the enemy away from them) 10 times to unlock:
Save your captured partner ten times in the main campaign.
Shine Moira's flashlight in an enemy's eyes to stun them. Do this 50 times to unlock:
Kill 100 Revenants (the big guys with weak spots and weapon arms in Barry's campaign) to unlock:
Shoot off 30 Revenant's weapon arms (the arm with a saw or blade - in later episodes they also have arms that sling sludge that also count toward this). There is a good spot at the end of Barry's Episode One after you use the crane to knock down the gate where two Revenants will spawn infinitely. You can farm them here or just do this by natural progression to unlock:
Destroy 30 Revenants' weapon arms.
Kill 50 enemies with Moira's crowbar (buy the Batter Up skill to make this easier). You can either hit them regularly until they die or use the crowbar to finish them off on the ground. Doing this unlocks:
Kill 20 enemies with a brick as Natalia (buy the Laying Bricks skill to make this easier). You can do this by throwing a brick to get the final hit on an enemy or holding down when an enemy is on the ground to finish them off. This unlocks:
Defeat 20 enemies with a brick as Natalia in the main campaign.
Kill 50 enemies with physical attacks (buy the Charge Attack skill to make this easier) to unlock:
Fudge Them Up!
Defeat 50 enemies with physical attacks in the main campaign.
Kill 30 Afflicted in mid-jump. The easiest place to do this is noted in Claire's Episode One.
You earn BP for completing levels, completing challenges, and collecting jewels. You should collect 50,000 BP in no time just by playing the levels and modes, and after doing so, you will unlock:
There are 3 achievements tied to Raid Mode, and these won't take too long to complete. Start the first set of Raid missions, and after you complete the first mission, you'll unlock:
When you pick up the golden items in the mission, you can go over to one of the benches in the hub room between missions and "evaluate" it to see what upgrade or weapon you found. Do this once to unlock:
Evaluate an item in Raid Mode.
A gauntlet is a set of 6 Raid missions. The first one (the only one available when you start, just labeled "I") is not too taxing. You only need to kill a certain number of enemies to end each mission. Killing them all just gives you a bonus score. I had better luck on the missions when I kept moving because you can avoid getting backed into a corner. This was especially helpful on missions 5 and 6. Once you finish all 6 missions in one gauntlet, you'll unlock:
That wraps up everything available in Episode One!
