You probably want to get your feet wet as soon as possible, so let’s dive in with a walkthrough of a simple voyage. For the purposes of this, we’ll use the Gold Hoarders trading company, but the general principles are the same for the others.
Firstly, you need to choose your pirate appearance from a random selection. You can re-roll the selection if you don’t see one you like straight away, optionally marking some to keep on the carousel in case you don’t see anything better. Currently, there is no way to change your pirate’s physical form after the initial selection so choose wisely.
Next, select your ship. For your first voyage, a sloop with a closed crew might be a good choice so you can get a feel for the game without the risk of a crewmate messing you around. You’ll still need to keep a constant lookout for other ships, though.
At this point, it’s worth bearing in mind that every play session is different, so things might not go exactly to plan. You might, for example, spawn in to find you ship stolen or other pirates on an island you need to visit. A big part of the game is learning to adapt your plans to avoid frustrating experiences.
Once you’ve loaded in, you’ll wake up in the tavern. Here you can earn your first achievement simply by eating a banana.
Follow the quick tutorial steps, then go over to some of the barrels and fill your pockets with any bananas, cannonballs and planks you can find. On your first voyage, it’s definitely worth carrying planks and bananas at all times. Once you’ve had a quick look around, go down to near the jetty where you should see your ship parked up and look around for the green tent of the Gold Hoarders trading company.
Go in, talk to the NPC in the tent, and purchase an initiation voyage. Go to your ship and head into the captain’s room and place the voyage on the table without the map on it by pressing . Then vote for it by pressing again. One or two quests will appear in your inventory, accessed using . Take a look at the quest map(s); you’ll need to remember the shape of the island to identify it. Turn to the map table and locate the island(s) you need to visit. Take note of the compass bearing you’ll need to go in for the first island, then head upstairs to the helm.
Now you’re ready to set sail. The anchor will be down and the sails up. First raise the anchor by pressing by the capstan (the round thing sticking out of the deck) and pushing it anticlockwise, then lower the sails by pressing by the halyard cleat (the thing the rope is wrapped around that isn't a pulley) then pushing . Look at the compass next to the wheel, grab the wheel by pressing by it, and steer using to head in the direction you noted while looking at the map. Once you’re sailing, you’ll unlock:
Once you reach your first island, drop the anchor, repair any holes, check for nearby ships, then hop off and find the buried treasure. Use the red cross on the quest map to locate the spot, or follow the clues on the riddle. When you think you’re in the right place, equip your shovel and start digging using . You’ll hear a “clunk” if you’ve found it. If not, check the map again and try somewhere else.
Load up your chest onto the boat, check around for nearby ships, then either repeat if you got two islands to do, or head back to the nearest outpost.
When you’ve dug up the last chest in the voyage, the voyage is considered complete and you’ll unlock:
On the way back to the outpost, you can go for another couple of easy achievements. The first doesn’t always pop when it should, but try lowering all the sails down and angling them to catch the wind. You should get:
All sails with the wind, what time it saves when speeding across the ocean's waves!
Then, if you fully turn the wheel to one side or the other and then drop the anchor, you’ll get:
To swiftly avoid a great danger you're dreading, steer hard and drop anchor to alter your heading!
Once you’ve got back to the outpost, cash in your chests at the Gold Hoarders tent. You’ll get paid a bit of gold and get a small reputation increase. Now you just have to repeat that whole process many, many times for all three trading companies! After cashing in a few chests, you should increase your reputation enough to unlock:
I Wanna Be A Pirate!
A Company's pleased and you've reason to revel if your Reputation increased by one level!
When you’ve finished your session, there are two more achievements you can knock off the list before you log off.
Firstly, scuttle your ship. This is done by pressing the button, then voting to scuttle. While it’s sinking, start playing a musical instrument by pressing , then to get the second menu of items, then selecting an instrument and holding to play it. Keep playing until your ship has sunk, and you should unlock:
A Titanic Ensemble
A pirate may choose to go down with their ship. A musical send-off concludes their sad trip!
Finally, if go to the tavern, fill your tankard, drink, refill, and repeat until you vomit. That will get you your next achievement.
It’ll take you a little while to sober up, unless you have a helpful crew-mate throw a bucket of water in your face. On the next page, we'll look at the trading companies in detail and uncover the full horror of the grind ahead of you. At which point, you might want to head back to the grog barrel.
