Choose new game and select Easy. The maps have everything I've found on it but easy is easy, it's not too important to loot every single thing or kill every enemy...obviously on harder difficulties it will be more important, but not here. You do not need to get the books, next playthrough will include getting the books. It doesn't hurt you to pick them up, because there appears to be some tracking across saves, but we can't get them all this playthrough so not much benefit in worrying about them. We'll be using the melee character this time because melee sucks on harder difficulties, and there are 4 books he can't access, so it'll be impossible to unlock until playthrough 2 regardless.
After the opening scene follow the path, killing the enemies you come by. When you reach a red crystal, this is a chest that only appears in the shadow realm that we're in now, open it and grab the loot (this is the red crystal on the map). Continue to the yellow! (the story objective) for a scene. You can now choose from three altars for three characters, each one has an achievement tied to them much later in the game, and is the main impetus behind needing 3 playthroughs. For now choose the far left of the 3, Kalig. You can now swap between Kalig and the Devourer (the demon you were controlling earlier) using
. When you are using the Devourer, you are in the shadow realm. That red crystal we opened earlier only appears in the shadow realm. When you select Kalig, one of your puppets, you will be in the mortal realm. You can only open chests with puppets, and generally need to be in the mortal realm to pick up items, interact with switches, or use doors. The enemies you'll see in either realm will be different too, though some enemies can be in both realms. Essentially there are two versions of each area depending on who you are controlling at the moment. You can switch to Kalig and loot the chest up the stairs, open the sarcophagi, and break the pots and such. You need to destroy 1000 objects like the pots, and you need to kill 100 rats, so make sure you destroy/kill them as you see them. Anyway, you need to break through the wall by the stairs with the yellow !. As you go through you'll see a green icon on the mini-map, you can switch to the Devourer and interact with it by holding
. You can have a max of 3 puppets and the Devourer. The Devourer and your "main" puppet (AKA Kalig) have to be in your party at all times, so you can only choose the last two. You can swap them here, though we only have Kalig right now. You also heal when standing in the green aura. Everyone heals, not just the character you are using. You won't need them much in easy difficulty, but you'll be hugging them quite a bit in the next 2. Anyway, you'll probably hit level 2 around now, or when fighting the next group of enemies, giving you an achievement.
Go up the stairs and head northwest, you'll reach a dead end and the game will tell you more about the mortal/shadow realm. Switch to the Devourer and a bridge will appear, cross it. You'll find a Soul Stone, which you can use to regenerate health (
) or mana (
). It has a certain number of charges. Each soulstone has a different number. To recharge them you need to talk to shadow traders, which are merchants you'll find in many places that only appear in the shadow realm. Head southwest up the stairs to a chest and a lever, flip it (hold
). Go up the stairs northeast of you and do the same for that lever. Now head northwest through the now open path. You'll be told about targeting mode, it's another thing that isn't really necessary on easy but will be quite useful for hard and extreme. Switch to the Devourer and get the crystal here, and go southwest to find a chest and enemies. Now head northeast in the shadow realm down the ramp. At the dead end you'll find a puzzle. Platforms spin across the room. They stop when you go into the shadow realm, so when the platform is in front of you, go into the shadow realm and cross it, then go back into the mortal realm so they spin again. When you reach the middle platform, you can find a chest to the southwest. Continue across to find a boss. Destroy the shield with the Devourer, then kill it with a puppet. This is a pretty common mechanic in the game, when you see a shield the Devourer is probably going to have to pop it. Head north to find the first of many Cenotaphs. You need to use them all for an achievement. They are the fast travel system for this game, so you don't want to miss activating them in case you need them later. Anyway, interact with this one using the Devourer and select the House Cellar option.Thole House Cellar
West of you should be a hexmark (white circle on my maps), these give essence. Each piece of equipment can have up to 4, they give various stats depending on the type of essence and what kind of equipment you put it in (putting something in a weapon will give a different effect than putting it in a piece of armor). Head through the gate north of the Cenotaph. You'll find a well here, you need to toss 999 silver into it (one at a time...) but you won't have enough money now, just remember it for later. Loot the place (both realms) and leave.Thole
After the scene, you'll regain control. You'll see a bunch of icons on the map. The chest icon is your stash (only accessible with Devourer). The brown bags are item shops that sell various things (though we're trying to save up silver for the achievement, so don't buy anything). The blue circle is the Cenotaph. Interact with it. Talk to Morphew above the Cenotaph, and pick both of the non-shop options to start 2 quests.
Talk to Wanion west of the Cenotaph and Rabbath south of it, then talk to Tesset southeast of it. Return to Morphew to complete that quest. Next head to the Hostel, it's the doorway west of the Cenotaph. There's a bunch of books here, but not much else. Not far inside you'll see some bones, you can go northeast of it to find a switch in the boxes, flip it. Now head up the stairs by the bones and then northeast, you'll find a chest we opened the door to. Interact with the bones using Kalig and the Devourer, then leave. Return to Morphew, use all his options (aside from shop). Talk to every merchant and choose both options. Now talk to them again and they'll have a new option (aside from Fayruz). Now talk to Fayruz again, choose the first option and then do it again. Return to the pile of bones in the Hostel in the shadow realm and you'll get a scene, then a new puppet and an achievement.
As for Urshak, he's a ranged puppet (an archer). I didn't use him much early on but he eventually becomes quite useful. He can attack enemies before they are even on the screen, and can eventually get a talent that a small chance to do a ton of damage. Plug enemies with arrows until they get into melee range, then switch to Kalig and finish them. Exit back to Thole. You want to talk to Arashad now. He's in the northeast corner of town. After a few sentences, you'll have a crapton of options. More will pop up as you choose others, just exhaust every option until all you can do is end the conversation. Now head to the Burial Grounds, it's west of the Hostel.Burial Grounds
Northwest of the Sanctuary you'll find a crystal in the shadow realm. Cross the bridge in Devourer form and head northeast. Destroy the wall with a puppet. In this room, you'll find a crystal, switch back to the Devourer and continue northeast. You'll reach a statue called Stone Servant, interact with it for a puzzle. You can select a ring and move it right or left, the ring you select and the adjacent one/s will turn. Here's how to solve it. Turn it right every time (
). Here's the order to turn the rings.
You'll find a chest in the northwest area. To go back interact with the statue again and press
to reset it. Backtrack and go southwest now (you'll need to be in the mortal realm to progress). There's a crystal in the south part of this room. Northwest of that is a path only the Devourer can use. After crossing the bridge you'll see a Cenotaph north of you, use it. Go up the stairs by it. At the top, you'll find a dead body, grab the key from it. Go down the other stairs to find a crystal, then go back up them. Head northeast, the fire spewing pillars will go down when you approach them. You'll reach a fork with a bunch of stairs. The south ones lead to a hexmark. Nothing in the other 3. Go back upstairs and take the path going southeast and go down the ramp with the Devourer, then go southeast to the locked door. Open it with a puppet and then leave. In Thole, I was switching between realms and after I had walked a few steps, the Devourer had a scene with a Blind Demon. This is one of many occasions where you can get karma. There's an achievement for good karma, and one for bad karma. If you check your stats page (the coins icon in the menu) and scroll down to the karma section, you'll see your karma. Mercy and Charity are good karma, Cruelty and Greed are bad karma. For the achievements, we need 10 of the right kind of karma above the wrong kind. This means if you get 1 bad karma you now need 11 good karma, so for that reason make sure you stick to the choices I tell you to make. Accept the pact for a quest. Head to Akram, and then east of him will be boxes on the cart. Interact with them and choose not to poison the boxes (bottom option for me). This will give you 1 mercy point.
Return to Arashad. Talk to him to complete the quest, then take the new one. Head back to the Burial Ground. Go northwest all the way to the fork with all the stairs, and go northeast (stay on the upper level). You'll find a statue, whack it with a puppet, then return to Arashad. When the topic of payment comes up, choose "Fine, one hundred" for 1 charity point. Return to the Burial Ground and head northwest until you pass the door we unlocked, go northeast. You'll have a scene, then a fight with another shielded spider. Break the shield with the Devourer, then have a puppet kill it. Enter the Catacombs the spider came out of.Catacombs
Follow the path northwest. Some traps will be shooting arrows at you, though they do less damage than the fireballs in the Burial Ground. When you go down the stairs you'll encounter a new enemy if you're in the shadow realm. It's called a dimensional rift. It summons enemies and throws fireballs at you, and has more health than anything you've faced in the shadow realm. After it summons enemies or throws fireballs, it will teleport to somewhere else, though not far. They seem to always drop some items, so they're worth killing. When you reach a long tunnel going northeast, you should see a chest north of you. In this realm is also a ghost named Piker in the shadow realm, talk to him for a quest. You'll see a bunch of spider eggs laying around, you can destroy them and spiders will spawn you can kill. Southeast of Piker is a small room with a lever and an enemy you will meet quite a bit : a guardian. Cut down his allies and then him, then flip the switch.
Go northeast from Piker to where the arrow shooters are, there's a wall northwest of them you can go through in the shadow realm. Follow the path to another room with a lever, and another guardian. After you kill it and flip the switch (there's also a hexmark here), backtrack. As you go back to Piker, you'll see a path going north you can take, the door is now open. Follow the path to a chest, north of it is the Cenotaph for this area, and another guardian. Continue west on the path to find the Spider Queen boss. As you lower her health she will summon some help. This fight was actually a bit of a struggle on easy, actually. She spits a pool of acid that did obnoxious damage to me, so you want to watch out for that. I started with Kalig, but after she summoned her allies I switched to the Devourer. His attack hits around him, while Kalig doesn't have that kind of range, so it's easier to deal with the crowd with the Devourer. If you like you can also run circles around them while plugging them with Urshak, but if you're in melee range of the queen she doesn't seem to use her poison much. Once it's dead you'll get an achievement.
Defeated the Aphotic Spider Queen and her minions.
Grab the Owl Amulet off the body in the northern part of the area, and return to Piker to finish his quest, this will give you 1 charity point. Now leave the Catacombs. There's a door in the room with the Spider Queen, but we can't open it right now, so return to Arashad. Use the Cenotaph east of the boss to make it much faster. Now, if you have 999 silver (I had about 2000) you can go to the well in the Thole House Cellar. Each time you press
, you spend 1 silver. You need to spend 999 on the well, so you need to press
999 times. You can use the achievement tracker to track your progress (though it won't go up until you stop pressing
). Once it drops Mjolnir? you'll have an achievement.
You probably hit level 3 a bit ago, but you definitely are now. As you level up you unlock talent slots (the skull icon in the menu). As you level up you unlock more talent slots. While you have a bunch to choose from there are more to unlock, though some are locked to a class or require another talent to be equipped first, or perhaps a certain amount of a stat. On easy I'd just get the offensive ones like the boost to critical chance of attack speed, defenses won't be useful in most cases. Next up let's do our last side quest, The Heirloom. Enter the locked door south of the Cenotaph, it leads to the Guild of Steel Cellar.Guild of Steel Cellar
Head northwest, and at the fork go southwest. The soldier here drops an Iron Key, and you can break the wall behind the pots in the northwest part of the room to find a chest. Go back to the fork and go northeast. You can push these boxes, but you'll see a small wall that blocks them in, you can only move one box at a time. Move the southernmost one northeast with a puppet, then use the Devourer to go through the wall by you so you can push the western one southeast. Switch back to the Devourer and go around to the northernmost box, and push it southwest. The chest is now yours. Go back to the room with the exit and go southeast. You'll reach a locked door, south of it is a crystal. We have the key, so go through. There's a blade that swings out from the wall, as with most traps they don't work in the shadow realm. At the top of the stairs if a hexmark. Continue down the path to an apparent dead end, use the Devourer to reveal a bridge. Follow the path to a chest on a table, open it and take the sword and enemies will attack. Go through the door they open to reach the Guild of Steel.Guild of Steel
Head northeast (crystal up the stairs) and follow the path around until you get a scene, 2 enemies will attack you. If you want you can pick up the Devourer's Possess skill, you can use it on one of the enemies to even the odds, but the fight is easy. Get the key the captain drops. In the southwest corner of the room is a path in the shadow realm that leads to a chest. The northeast wall of that room has a locked door we got the key for, go inside for a scene. Afterwards you can loot the room. You'll find a chest and a hexmark. You'll see the yellow ! on a door, go through it, you'll be back in Thole. There's a hexmark southwest of you. Just southwest of the Hostel entrance is a ghost in the shadow realm named Dione (she's green, while the living humans are purple), accept the quest. Talk to Tope who is just west of her, ask him where the barrel is. It's right by the Hostel entrance, pick it up. Now talk to the guard with the yellow ! for the quest east of you, you'll finish the quest and get a mercy point. Now go to Arashad, and choose the "keep your money" option when you get a prompt for 1 charity point. We're about done with Thole for now, so let's move on. We'll be doing the "Find Hooded Man" quest now, the other main quest you should have is level 12 and we haven't gotten to where we need to be anyway. Now head to the Arcanum Door that we got a key for. It's northwest of your stash. Unlock it and enter.Arcanum
Head north through the iron gate for a scene. You cannot win this fight, so don't try. Your ally will cast a spell on the ground, your objective is to get the enemy to walk onto the circle and stay there, so when it "explodes" or whatever, it stuns her. Do this 4 times to win. She can do a ton of damage, so instead of trying to fight her, only hit her every once in awhile to keep her aggro. When the circle appears lead her into it and run around in circles, which should dodge most of her attacks. You can try to do this with Urshak, but it will be easier to keep her on the circle with Kalig, because you can simply have him stand in it. Remember you can use
to heal, this is probably the first time you've had to do so. Once you "win" you'll have a scene. Exhaust all the dialog options. Leave, there's a crystal west of you. Use the Cenotaph to head to the Burial Ground, then head to the yellow ! and interact with the pedestal, then go down the stairs to reach the Lower Catacombs.Lower Catacombs
Go south for a chest, then head northwest. You'll find a new enemy called Aphotic Kamikaze. As the name implies, it explodes when you kill it. Easiest to kill them with Urshak and then back off. Progress northwest, through a ton of enemies. Undead will pop out of the ground a lot here. Something you might see is that Urshak won't do much damage to them. Every attack has a damage type, and Urshak's shortbows do pierce damage, which skeletons are resistant to. However greatbows do blunt damage, so if you have a longbow, you can just use that instead. Or Kalig. There's a crystal in the first big room. You'll reach a door, flip the lever to open it. Go through, cross the bridge in the shadow realm, and you'll reach a room with another boulder. First use the northwest path in the shadow realm to find a chest and a crystal, then go back to the room with the boulder. The pressure plate is by the path we just took, push the boulder onto it. To push it simply walk into it. Go through the door to find a much more difficult puzzle. The bottom lever starts a boulder rolling, the other 3 move platforms for the boulder to roll across. Essentially you need to hit the bottom lever, then hit the other 3 in the proper order, at the proper time, to get the boulder onto the pressure plate. Going from top (#1) to bottom (#3) you need to hit 3-2-1-2-3-1 as the boulder is going over the platforms. The timing might take a try or two to get right. Continue northwest to find a shielded spider.
After killing it, head southwest. You have to pull the lever and then the flame jets stop one by one, and you can slowly move across. Go through the wall with the Devourer for another guardian. Kill it and grab the essence it drops, then go back to the fork and go northeast. You'll find another guardian, cut it down and grab the essence. There's a hexmark in this room. Go back to the sanctuary and go northwest, open the magic portal. Use the Devourer to continue, you'll find a chest and then a crystal as you go. You'll reach a Cenotaph, activate it. Follow the path to a fork and head northeast for a puzzle. Hit the south switch, the west one, and the north one. Go northeast to find 2 guardians, cut them down. There's a hexmark by the north stairs and a crystal at the top of the south ones. Go up all the stairs to find another puzzle. You need to walk across the tiles in a specific order to get the chest. When you flip the lever the flames turn off. You need to walk across the correct tiles. If the fire starts again, you goofed up. Here's a picture of the correct path. You can also switch to the Devourer to see it.
Grab the key from the chest. Go back to the fork and go southwest for a boss fight. He will teleport to one of the outer walls, then throw a flame wall in front of him, simply move out of the way. He will also throw fireballs at you. Neither does an incredible amount of damage, so you can just wail away at him, though using Urshak so you don't have to chase him with Kalig or the Devourer would be much easier. Once he gets down to about 1/2 health, he will summon the Ironclad Zombie we saw in an earlier scene. It should be a quick kill with Kalig, then finish off the main boss. Afterwards you'll get a new puppet, the Ironclad Zombie we just fought. Head northwest to find a wall you can break, though there are crystals east and south of it to grab first. Use the Ironclad Zombie to hit the door three times, then use the exit. You'll get an achievement, and enter chapter 2.
