3. Comprehensive Playthrough
After a brief intro cinematic, your submarine will crash through an icy surface into the watery area beneath and you'll gain control.
I suggest following along with the world map and marking off upgrades and holotapes as you find them so you don't miss any.
Head down to the next screen and follow the linear path down to the bottom, then around to the left and head upward to the top path that exits left. Along the way be sure to interact with four holotapes (1/41, 2/41, 3/41, and 4/41). Take care to avoid the clams along some of the walls and the poison gas pipes along the way. Once you get to the upper left room, you'll be locked in and can collect the first ship upgrade, the Lower Harpoon. This weapon can be shot through the lower 180 degree arc and also serves as a tool to trigger door mechanisms and open doors. You aim with and shoot with ; tapping will release a short range (potentially rapid-fire) shot and holding it longer will result in greater range.
Be sure to shoot any random fish you see swimming around until you eventually kill 100, after which an achievement will unlock:

Note that the first time you die, you'll unlock an achievement:

Continue left to the next screen and shoot the door mechanism, then go left to begin the first boss battle with The Worm.
This boss shouldn't present much of a challenge as he only has a few attacks that you can easily avoid. When he leaves the screen, watch for an rustling indicating above or below to see where he is and then be prepared to move when he returns to the area. If he does a vertical dive, avoid him but stay close enough to shoot him a few times as he moves past. If he pops halfway out and folds over, he is about to launch out a barrage of small worms and your best bet is to get close to him where he meets the ground/ceiling and blast away until he retreats. If he is off screen and you hear yell/scream, he is about to charge from the left so be prepared to shoot him when he gets close so that he retreats.
After defeating him, an achievement will unlock:

Take the newly formed tunnel under his corpse and follow it to the right, exit through a hole in the wall, and open the door to continue to the next screen. Follow the lower path to the right (beware the clams and poison pipes) and shoot the door mechanism so that you can continue right to the next screen. Exit right to the next screen and go straight across to the wall along the right side. There's a hidden path through the wall indicated by an item that looks somewhat like an atom. Enter this cave for the first upgrade crate - a Hull Repair Speed upgrade. Make your way to the top of this area and then go left to find a holotape (5/41) and another upgrade crate - a Hull upgrade that increases your health. Backtrack to the previous screen and follow the left side wall downward to find a somewhat hard to see holotape (6/41). Continue downward to the next screen to enter the Crossroads area make your way straight down to find Crossroads Station.
Head left and interact with a holotape (7/41) by a giant satellite dish, then go further left to find an upgrade crate with a Hull upgrade near some underwater mines. Be careful around these mines as touching them will kill you. Go back to Crossroads Station and head right to the next screen. You'll notice an enemy of sorts - a plant on the lower surface constantly shooting a projectile straight up. You can shoot it to disable him temporarily or just move past him carefully. Get to the top of the large central surface to find a holotape (8/41) near a large pink coral, then go to the recess in the lower right part of the area to find an upgrade crate with a Hull upgrade in some green tree roots. Then take the bottom exit to the screen below where you will battle the next boss, The Fathers.
This boss is two large seahorses that attack by releasing a group of small, slow moving seahorses that chase you. They will also occasionally launch a burst of small seahorses at you. Avoid their projectiles as you shoot them with your harpoon, making it a point to stay above them. They can also do a horizontal burst that will knock you to the side, possibly into hazards on the wall, so try not to ever get level with them. Once they get low on health they will spawn some slightly larger seahorses that circle around them.
After defeating them, an achievement will unlock:

You'll also find a ship upgrade floating nearby- the Saw. This upgrade allows you to cut through seaweed blockages indicated on the map as a green squiggly line. It can also kill small fish. You can toggle between Harpoon and Saw with or .
You now want to backtrack a bit and make use of the saw for items that were previously inaccessible. Head back to Crossroads Station (you'll need to cut your way out of the boss area with the saw) and go straight up to find a seaweed barrier that you can cut through to get an upgrade crate that contains a Harpoon Charge Speed upgrade. Go one screen to the right to find a hard to see holotape (9/41) on a ledge with some rotating pink sea foliage. Go into the narrow opening to the right and you'll find an upgrade crate with a Hull Repair Speed upgrade. Cut through some seaweed and follow the path down, around, and up. You want to follow the path to the upper right, then make your way to the left once you reach the top of the area. You'll need to get past a bunch of environmental hazards so progress with care. You'll eventually see a pulsing urchin connected to a strand of seaweed - cut the strand with the saw and the urchin will float up and collide with a barrier, creating a hole that you can move through. Move into this previously blocked off area for an Engine Upgrade that allows you to travel slightly faster. You can also now move against currents indicated by flows of bubbles that would otherwise only be traversable one way (shown on the map as a series of blue arrows).
Exit this area by taking the path downward and through the bubbly currents and make your way to the far right exit, taking it to the next screen. Rest at the Forest Cave Station, noting that you can now fast travel between any stations you've previously visited.
Make your way up and to the right, then back to the left and you'll reach an area with a holotape
(10/41) and an upgrade crate
containing a Harpoon Charge Speed upgrade. Return to the Forest Cave Station, then take the nearby down exit to the next screen.
Follow the path to the left and down, then cut through seaweed on the right. Go straight down between walls lined by clams to find an upgrade crate containing a Harpoon Charge Speed upgrade at the bottom. Then follow the path to the right and you'll see two more explosive urchins - cut them free and they will float up and clear a path for you to go through. Interact with a holotape (11/41) on the right side of the area, then go through the hole that the urchins created and follow the path until you exit right to the next screen. This next area contains a boss battle that gives an opportunity for a missable achievement.
The Tranquil is a giant immobile octopus. His weak points are his eyes and his beak, but his tentacles can also be damaged with the harpoon. Each tentacle segment can be weakened with three harpoon shots, resulting in visible damage. Once a segment is weakened, hitting it with the saw will cut off the entire tentacle at that point. The boss goes through two phases, each of which has four tentacles. An achievement requires that you Incapacitate the Tranquil, which requires fully cutting off all eight tentacles.
The tentacles in the first phase are much less aggressive. I find it best to go over and behind the top two tentacles, then weaken them at the base and cut them off. Then do the same with the lower two tentacles. Once all four are fully removed (if any of them continue to move, there is another segment that can be cut), shoot the boss a few times in the eye, then a few times in the beak and phase two will start.
Four new tentacles will appear that are much more aggressive. Random debris continually falls from the top of the area and the tentacles will occasionally flail around. Again, carefully make your way over and behind the top two tentacles, then weaken them at the base and cut them off. Repeat with the lower two and as soon as all four are completely severed (assuming you fully severed the first four), an achievement will unlock:

Then simply shoot the boss in the eye a few times, then in the beak a few times to defeat him, after which an achievement will unlock:
Unlocked by 80 tracked gamers (21% - TA Ratio = 2.17)
You'll then see a ship upgrade floating nearby- the Shield. This provides a second layer of defense and like the hull itself, it will regenerate over time as long as you aren't taking further damage. Head right into the next screen, then go up along the left wall to find a holotape (12/41). Then head to the far right side of the area and head downward to find another holotape (13/41). Then make your way straight down until you reach the Seabed area. Go to the right side of the area and through a secret wall that leads into a cave with an upgrade crate that contains a Hull upgrade. Exit the cave and go downward to find a holotape (14/41), then exit down to the screen below into the Abyss (we are coming right back to explore to the left after saving at the nearby station).
Follow the path down and interact with a difficult to see holotape (15/41) behind the shadow of some sort of a crane machine. Then go all the way to the left to get to the Abyss Station and rest.
Follow the path down and to the right, taking care to avoid bursts of square projectiles released by some sea plants. Interact with a holotape
(16/41) near one such sea plant, then continue all the way right until you reach a corner with a secret wall
; go through to enter a cave with an upgrade crate
that contains a Hull upgrade. Backtrack out of the Abyss and go left as soon as you can and you'll see a cave with a hard to see upgrade crate inside
. Collect it for a Hull upgrade, then head up and to the left and carefully avoid mines until you reach the ceiling. Once you do, follow it left and exit to the next screen. Follow the ceiling to the left and when you see a plant shooting projectiles, look directly below for an upgrade crate
between the mines that contains a Hull upgrade. Carefully collect it, then continue left until you reach South Capital Station.
Rest, then fast travel to the Crossroads Station. Take the downward exit to the left of the station into Pipe Central and go straight down until you see a holotape
(17/41). Go directly right and into a tube with another holotape
(18/41). Use the saw to cut through seaweed and collect an upgrade crate
that contains a Harpoon Charge Speed upgrade, then backtrack left and follow the path up and around to the right and into a narrow path. Interact with a holotape
(19/41), then continue along the path and exit down to the next screen. Follow the path until you can go left, then continue left to reach Pipe Central Station.
Be careful with the poison gas pipe on the left and make your way down, past another poison pipe, and around to the right. Cut trough seaweed and you'll find a holotape (20/41) at the bottom. Backtrack to the open area and go left to find a holotape (21/41) near a large yellowish green coral. Then go all the way left, staying on the upper path, and you'll eventually reach a downward opening through some pipes that leads into the next boss area.
The Forgotten One is an undead fish that has several different means of attack. It will release poison clouds that you must avoid as they can deal huge damage quickly. It has two different charging attacks - one that comes in multiple bursts that you can avoid by getting around him so that he can't angle towards you, another that charges vertically after he does a somersault maneuver. You can get good damage in after avoiding these charges. He will also shoot out spikes in several directions and occasionally stop in place and suck in everything around him, restoring some of his health in the process. And once his health gets to about half, he will add in an action where he turns into a skeleton and releases a large poison cloud that chases you for several seconds, then returns to the boss after which he goes back his other patterns/attacks.
Defeat the boss to unlock an achievement:

You'll then see a ship upgrade floating nearby - the Jet Thruster. This ability has three uses that recharge over time. You can use it via to dash in any direction, which allows you to get through poison gas emissions that otherwise block your path. You can also dash to evade enemy attacks.
Go to the far right of the boss area to reveal a secret path, then dash through the poison mist to collect an upgrade crate that contains a Hull upgrade. Dash through some more poison mist and interact with a holotape (22/41), then head back towards Pipe Central Station. Dash through poison mist in a cave below the station to find an upgrade crate with a Hull upgrade and a holotape (23/41). Then rest at Pipe Central Station and travel to Abyss Station.
Head down and to the right until you can exit down to the next screen to begin a boss battle.
The False Light is a giant Anglerfish that has a bright lamp attached to its head. It will disappear, then it's lamp will appear, then you'll see the boss briefly before he reappears which gives you time to dash out of his way. After doing so, shoot him repeatedly with harpoons and avoid falling debris, bubbly jet streams, and other fish lured by his light until he disappears. Repeat until he is defeated, after which you will unlock an achievement:

You'll then see a ship upgrade floating nearby - the Lamp. This illuminates dark areas making it easier to see (and preventing you from losing mini map access). Return to Abyss Station and travel to Forest Cave Station. Go down, then left, then down, then right through some seaweed, then down, then right again and you should get to the area with explosive urchins. Dash through several poison mist pipes on the lower right side of the area and exit down to the next screen.
Go down along the right wall to find a holotape (24/41), then go straight across to the left and when you get to the wall, head down to find an upgrade crate with a Hull Repair Speed upgrade. Follow the wall down, then around to the left and up to get to another holotape (25/41). Then go down and to the left to get to Mine Woods Station and rest.
Go straight down and exit to the next screen, then follow the path to the right, sticking to the top and you'll find a holotape
(26/41) in a tunnel at the end. Backtrack to the main path and head downward along the right wall until you reach the bottom to find another holotape
(27/41). Then go left and down into a tunnel, dash past some downward projectiles, and beware the mine as you exit down to the next screen.
Follow the path downward to the bottom and once there (you'll be obscured by a large pink coral), use the saw along the right wall to reveal a secret passage blocked by seaweed. Follow this linear path and at the very bottom you'll find a secret upgrade- Triple Harpoons. You now fire three harpoons with each shot instead of one, tripling your damage output.
Backtrack to the vertical tunnel and head up to the top, then follow the floor to the left and go through a bubbly current. Head upward (beware mines) and you'll see an upgrade crate that contains a Hull upgrade. Then continue along the upward path, head left at the top, and exit to the next screen. Shoot the mechanism near the door to open it, then collect the Torpedo upgrade on the left. You can now toggle between Harpoon, Saw, and Torpedoes with LB/RB. Torpedoes are fired in the direction you are facing and can destroy stone barriers and mines (and damage some bosses).
Exit down the next screen to start the boss battle with the Defiler.
This boss is really just a chase sequence where you have to destroy stone barriers with torpedoes, cut through seaweed with the saw, and avoid random projectiles as you make your way to the end of the area where you can shoot a door mechanism to kill the boss. The path is linear but there is a single fork after the first left stretch where you can go down or continue to the left. Keep going left to find a holotape (28/41).
After defeating the boss, an achievement will unlock:
Unlocked by 61 tracked gamers (16% - TA Ratio = 2.48)
Exit left to the next screen, then follow the path up, then left to get to Pipe Central Station. We now want to use the Torpedo in earlier areas to access things that we couldn't previously. Start by traveling to Abyss Station. Go down and shoot a torpedo at the left wall near a small brown tree to reveal a secret path. Go left into a new screen and follow the path all the way to the end to find an upgrade crate with a Hull Repair Speed upgrade. Then backtrack to the middle of this area and you'll see some blue crystals on the ceiling indicating a secret upward path. Enter the cave above and find a large blue crystal at the end that you need to shoot with the harpoon, causing it to shimmer. Once this is done, backtrack to Abyss Station.
Make your way right and up to the next screen, then head straight up until you reach the top area of the map. Once there, follow the ceiling to the left and break a stone barrier with torpedoes to reach an upgrade crate that contains a Hull Repair Speed upgrade. Then head all the way to the right until you see a large stone slab with writing on it.
Hover in front of it and it will split in two
, allowing you to enter a secret passage below it. Follow this path to the right, break some stone blockages with torpedoes, and shoot the large blue crystal
at the end with the harpoon so that it shimmers. Then backtrack out of this secret area and go down towards Abyss Station, but head left at the Seabed area and make your way towards South Capital Station.
Break through the stone wall below the station with a torpedo and interact with a holotape (29/41), then rest at the station and travel to Pipe Central Station. Go right, up to the next screen, right, and up through a narrow vertical path and you'll see some blue crystals along the right side. Move through the wall between two of them to enter a secret area. Dash through the poison mist and shoot the nearby large blue crystal with a harpoon so that it shimmies, then backtrack to Pipe Central Station and rest. If you check the fast travel screen, you'll see that a pyramid has been drawn between the three large blue crystal locations.
We'll be visiting the central point soon (note that the screenshot above is not from my playthrough and shows stations that haven't been found yet).
Go left and exit down, then make your way to the bottom of the area and follow the path to the right, then exit down to the next screen. As you enter the open area at the bottom you'll begin a boss battle with the Parasite.
This boss is essentially a wad of pink goo that chases you around, then splits into little pieces that chase you around before reforming into one large piece and repeating the process. Your goal is to avoid the parasite (and the small pieces of it) while shooting it with the harpoon. The dash is particularly useful for getting away from small pieces. You'll take damage if the boss (or its small pieces) touch you which may bounce you into clams along the wall to deal even more damage.
Defeat the boss to unlock an achievement:

Collect the three upgrade crates that appear (Hull, Hull Repair Speed, and Harpoon Charge Speed), then backtrack to Pipe Central Station and travel to Forest Cave Station. Go as far right as you can and shoot the wall with a torpedo to reveal a secret area. Head right into a large cave to find a secret upgrade- Harpoon Explosions - in some tree roots on the right side. I'm not sure what this does exactly but it sounds cool :D
Backtrack to Forest Cave Station and travel to South Capital Station. Go up and left from here and open the door, then enter the area to the left and you'll find a ship upgrade floating near a lighthouse.This is the Upper Harpoon and allows you to fire the harpoon through a full 360 degree range. After closing the upgrade screen, a boss battle will begin.
The Chain Gang consists of a giant shark that has two mines attacked to his tail with chains and then dozens of small sharks. You need to kill the giant shark and all of the little sharks. From the start, try right away to bait the giant shark to charge into his mines as each one will deal about 40% damage to him. Small sharks will immediately start to swarm, though, so you'll want to swim around the area and kill the little sharks by touching them with the saw, which I found easier than shooting them with harpoons. I suggest constantly moving around the entire area until all the little sharks are killed and avoiding the large shark in the mean time, then killing him last. Once they are all defeated, an achievement will unlock:

Exit on the right, go back to South Capital Station, and rest. Return to the Chain Gang area and approach the lighthouse, floating in front of its light momentarily. Go slightly left and you should see a cloud of blue particles.
Swim into this cloud and it will move, so follow it through the ceiling to reach a secret area. Collect the item here to unlock Hardcore mode and an achievement:

Return to South Capital Station and travel to Crossroads Station. Go left and exit to the next screen into District 7. Head to the bottom to find a holotape (30/41), then go all the way to the left to find another holotape (31/41). Dash through the poison mist just above to get an upgrade crate that contains a Harpoon Charge Speed upgrade, then go back to the right and down through a broken bridge, use torpedoes to break the stone barrier, and exit to the screen below.
Head down, then right and through a door that opens with harpoons. Hug the right wall and enter a secret passage that leads to a secret upgrade. I have no idea what this spotlight does, though. Return to the main area and go down to the bottom to interact with a holotape (32/41), then go left and dash through a series of poison pipes. Dash through some more poison mist into an alcove in the upper left that contains an upgrade crate that grants an extra dash charge. Interact with the nearby holotape (33/41), then dash out of the alcove and take the lower left path to the next screen.
Continue left and rest at District 7 Lower Station.
Make your way along the bottom of the large area on the left and interact with three holotapes (34/41
), then head up to the top of the area to find another holotape
(37/41). Go through a secret wall
next to what appears to be the US Capitol building to find an upgrade crate that contains a Harpoon Charge Speed upgrade. Then backtrack and take the downward path to the screen below to begin a boss battle.
The Heart of the City is a two phase boss battle. In phase one, you must avoid a wide range of projectiles as you destroy small plants to break horizontal barriers in order to get to the bottom of the area, then shoot the pink vulnerable part of the boss when it is exposed. This will cause an upward moving platform to appear with a weak point that you need to use the saw to cut through. After doing this, shoot the boss in its weak pink section again when it is exposed and you will be thrust upward. Swim up to the top and be prepared to saw through weak points of several downward moving platforms, after which you'll be grabbed by a pink appendage and taken to the area for phase two.
You must again avoid endless projectiles while you destroy plants to break through horizontal barriers in order to get to the bottom of the area. Destroy two more plants protecting the heart, then shoot the heart itself several times to defeat the boss, unlocking an achievement:
Unlocked by 53 tracked gamers (14% - TA Ratio = 2.67)
You'll then see a ship upgrade floating nearby - Drone part 1. Be sure to grab it (it creates a new slot that you toggle through with LB/RB but it serves no purpose yet), then backtrack to District 7 Lower Station and travel to Crossroads Station. Then head left and follow along the ceiling until you reach a door that you need to shoot open. Do so and enter the next area to trigger a boss battle.
The Experiment is a large ray that has a weak point on its ventral side. You must shoot it there once to remove a protective barrier, after which the heart is exposed and can be shot to deal damage. The protective barrier will regenerate after a few seconds and need to be shot again so that you can continue dealing damage to the boss.
You want to try to always stay below the boss as he can occasionally shoot a dangerous horizontal burst of energy that would likely kill you if it hit you. He will constantly spew bloody projectiles, both randomly and when his heart is shot. Watch out for large bloody blobs that explode in all directions. As you whittle away at his health, blue wormlike entities start to appear and move towards you. They cannot be shot/destroyed and must be avoided.
Stay in the lower half of the area and move from left to right with the boss (using a door mechanism in the middle as needed) to chip away at his health. Once he is defeated, an achievement will unlock:

You'll then see a ship upgrade floating nearby - Drone part 2. Pick it up and the drone will be fully operational. Then find the two holotapes in the area (38/41, 39/41) - one in the lower left corner and the other in an alcove down/right from the door that can be opened in the central area.
Exit this screen and take the path to the right and through the door, then follow the ground around to the left and go all the way left to exit to the next screen into an area called Facility. Find a holotape (40/41) in a platform with some shipping crates, then follow the path to the bottom and you'll see a brief scene where a drone approaches some sort of a control robot, then enters the area to the left. Toggle to the drone, approach the robot, and the door will open for you, allowing you to enter. If the drone explodes instead, you forgot to pick up one of the drone parts from either the Heart of the City boss or the Experiment boss.
Once inside, follow a linear path where you need to carefully avoid (dash past) some electrical barriers that will kill you if you touch them. After sawing through some seaweed, go up and take the right path, carefully moving past some electrical barriers and falling debris. At the top you'll find Facility Station where you can rest.
To the left of the station is an upgrade crate
that contains the full in-game map. Collecting this will unlock an achievement:
Unlocked by 32 tracked gamers (8% - TA Ratio = 3.43)
The final holotape (41/41) is also nearby, so interact with it to unlock another achievement:
Unlocked by 27 tracked gamers (7% - TA Ratio = 3.74)
Follow the path to the right, taking care to avoid the two electrical barriers. Head up and then go left to the next screen. You'll see two dangling wires before the closed door - go up between them to reveal a secret path and continue upward into a large room with what appears to be two severed heads in storage tanks (the devs, apparently). Torpedo each tank, then harpoon each head and a secret upgrade will appear. This upgrade makes it so the drone acts as a shield when active against "laser attacks," although I found it to be mostly useless since it circles you and only protects against projectiles that it collides with.
Backtrack to the main path, open the door on the left, and enter a large room where the battle with the Guardian will begin after you approach the path on the far left side of the area.
The Guardian is a squid-like drone that swims around the area and releases many red projectiles (and a few small drones) that you want to try to avoid. The head is the weak point and you want to shoot it there with torpedoes to inflict damage. Stay in the central area, avoid the projectiles as best you can (dashing is a huge help), and continually fire torpedoes at the Guardian to chip away at its health. It will often come straight at you horizontally, generally leading with a tentacle that somewhat shields its head, and firing white projectiles as it attempts to crash into you. If you hit it in the head during this attack, it will get knocked away and go back to its usual behavior.
After is defeated, it will swim away and the door on the left opens, allowing you to advance to the final area.
Enter the boss area by opening a door. In this second phase, the Guardian will move you through four quadrants where you must avoid projectiles and hazards, starting with the right quadrant and then moving you through the upper, then left, then lower, and then right quadrant again. After this cycle is complete, you will be moved randomly through the quadrants for the remainder of the battle. At the end of each sequence in the left and right quadrants, you'll avoid a charged laser beam and then get a chance to shoot the Guardian with torpedoes to deal damage before it moves you to the next quadrant. This laser will track you harmlessly for about 6 or so seconds while it charges, then it will stop moving and unleash a deadly blast that you need to get away from. You'll need damage the boss 5 or 6 times to kill it (and can only do so once per left/right quadrant cycle), with the goal of avoiding projectiles and hazards to stay alive until you are able to deal enough damage to finally defeat it.
The Guardian has four tentacles that can create problems for you, but if you shoot them with torpedoes, you'll create a weak spot that you can hit with the saw to cut the tentacle off permanently. Try to do this in your first trip around the quadrants so the tentacles don't bother you for subsequent quadrant visits (things start to get more hectic then).
The lower quadrant has poison pipes that you need to avoid. The left quadrant has a constant barrage of falling rocks. The right quadrant spawns a steady stream of small sentries. And after you get to the random quadrant part of the battle, the Guardian will spawn small sentries in each quadrant, so be sure to harpoon them quickly while avoiding projectiles and hazards.
Once you kill the guardian, an achievement will unlock:

Go all the way to the left from here and you'll encounter a robotic machine that gives you some insight into the story.
After this dialogue, the facility will start to crumble and you need to backtrack to exit the area (VIDEO

In this room, head to the upper right corner through some crumbling debris to shoot a door mechanism, then quickly go down and right though the open door and into the next screen. Keep moving right to avoid being crushed and as you head towards the upper right path, the whole room will start to collapse. A huge falling platform will crash into a lower platform that will then fall into the ground, breaking open a lower path that you want to quickly move through. Once you exit to the next screen, your submarine will fall to the ground and the end credits will roll, after which an achievement will unlock:

Your first playthrough is complete. You should have three remaining achievements that require a no upgrade crate playthrough, a Hardcore playthrough, and completing Boss Rush.
