3. The BIGS Story walkthroughUpdate notes

The first thing you're going to do when you're playing this game is start up "Rookie Challenge". By doing so you will choose a team. Each team has their own subsequent spring training area, which you'll go into in the next part of the game. There are two achievements related to this. If you want the Grapefruit League Achievement you must pick one of these teams:

Astros, braves, cardinals, marlins, mets, nationals, Phillies, pirates, reds, blue jays, rays, orioles, red sox, tigers, twins, Yankees

If you want the Cactus league achievement, you must pick one of these teams:

Brewers, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Rockies, Angels, Athletics, Indians, Rangers, Royals, Mariners, White Sox

Unlike what some people online might think, this has nothing to do with the NL/AL.

You're going to have to play through this game twice, using a team for the NL for one and one from the AL for the other, so choose one team from the AL / NL first/second. Your team will quickly evolve and drastically change, so it really doesn't matter except for if you have a favorite team / a favorite group of players you want to use. If you know little about baseball, The Yankees/Red Sox/Angels are always a good choice for an AL team. The Cardinals/Phillies/Cubs/Brewers are a good choice for an NL team.

If you don’t know anything about baseball, the American League is considered slightly easier due to the league having a designated hitter – the pitcher doesn’t have to hit.

This means that you basically get an extra hitter in your lineup. So if you’re new to baseball games I recommend the American League first. You are also capable of picking the difficulty you want to play on, and you won’t be able to change this after it starts. Easy will mean that you won’t have to ever replay a game, but you’ll probably get bored once you get competent enough. I recommend Normal on your first playthrough, and then Hard on the second one to keep you entertained, but it's your call.

Choose appropriately so that you get both of these achievements in your two playthroughs, or else you'll have to start a third to grab the remaining one.

There is one other achievement that you will unlock in the middle of your first playthrough of the rookie challenge mode. This is the following one. You’ll get this easily by playing through the rookie mode.

You might start to get scared as you’re getting close to the end and you’ll feel you won’t have enough points. I promise you that you will. You play the homerun pinball around the all-star break which translates to at least 100,000 points, and it’s more like 300,000 if you are any good at it at all. Before any game you can choose to rank up any of your rookie’s stats if you have enough points. I recommend this one thing: you don’t really need to bother “saving up”.

You’ll max them all sooner or later, so thinking “I want to make my guy super fast!” is kind of pointless. Just take the quick upgrade.

Now while you’re playing through Rookie Challenge Mode, you’re going to get some of the following achievements simply because, well, they come from playing baseball. If you’re having trouble with any of these achievements, refer to the in-game tutorial. There’s no point in me telling you how to get a strikeout. Even if you have no idea what you are doing, you’ll eventually get one just by luck.

That’s all I’ll put in that category, because the rest may be considered slightly more advanced. First we will start with the strikeout achievements. If you’re having a problem with getting the strikeout achievements, there is an easy solution. Start up a single player exhibition game on easy, against a computer controlled team that isn’t very good. Usually this consists of teams like the Royals or the Nationals is usually a good choice. Obviously throwing a perfect pitch is far better than throwing a mediocre pitch, and you’re going to need practice for the perfect pitches achievement anyway. If you throw a perfect pitch they will miss a majority of the time.

Give yourself a good team (Specifically a good pitcher), choosing either the NL All stars, the AL all stars, or just a team with a good starter (Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays, Cliff Lee from the Phillies), etc. Keep in mind that the game came out in 2007 so the guys that you might think are good now, aren’t necessarily considered good by the game (Case in Point: Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers). Now obviously to get these large amount of strikeouts, there is only one restriction – the amount of outs you have to work with. So therefore, if someone DOES hit the ball, choose not to throw them out / catch it. This means you’ll probably start losing in score, but it doesn’t matter. Put your team on the “Right Side” during the select team process so that you get to pitch first, so you don’t waste more time than necessary.

While we are in the idea of pitching, let’s talk about the perfect pitches achievements. These can actually be the hardest achievements in the game, and can get extremely frustrating. Again, set up a single player exhibition game, making the computer a bad team (Royals, Nationals) and giving yourself a good pitcher (NL All stars, AL all stars).

Put your team on the “Right Side” during the select team process so that you get to pitch first, so you don’t waste more time than necessary. You may also get this achievement while working towards the Textbook Perfection achievement that I will discuss later, but no matter what you should be practicing these as you progress through the game.

You can decide to count how many perfect pitches you have in a row if you’d like, but this psych’s a lot of people out. I doubt you’ll get the 15 perfect pitches in a row by “accident”, but the others you have a possibility of. I’m sorry I don’t have a more “fool proof way” to get these, it just takes practice. Play through the two rookie challenge modes before you deliberately go for these, since you will need the practice anyway.

Now let’s move onto the “Runs” achievement in a game, as well as the doubles and triples achievements, and the homerun achievements. Obviously the best strategy is just to hit homeruns. To hit homeruns press “Up” on your left control stick when you swing, and aim. The best way I personally found to do this was to play as a good team (NL all stars, AL all stars) against the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition game. Make sure the Red Sox are the home team (Aka: You’re playing Fenway Park). Now if you know anything about baseball, you know that Manny Ramirez is playing Left Field.

You also know that there is the “Green Monster” in left field (a huge wall a short distance away). Start the game off by switching out any of your position players whose main attribute is speed (Ichiro Suzuki) for players who have power off your bench. Then just smash the ball with the “B” button and aiming “Up” and to the “Left”.

Ramirez is unable to field in this game, so everytime he tries to make a “sensational catch” it will likely not happen, which means you don’t have to worry about making outs. This translates to a lot of doubles and triples. Sometimes they will be out of range, which means a homerun obviously, and quite a few balls will bounce off Manny’s glove into the stands. Alternatively you can play against the Chicago Cubs and do the same thing to Alfonso Soriano in left field. Obviously if all that is left is the doubles achievements, and you don’t need anymore triples, stop at second, and vice versa.

So now that all that is out of the way, onto the stolen bases achievements. Obviously to steal you need to have a person on base. If you’re deliberately going for these achievements, stop yourself at first so that you have the opportunity to potentially steal two bases.

When you’re on base hold Left Trigger and then hit “Y” to steal. Then make sure to hold down the right trigger to use any turbo you have. When you get close to second/third base hit “A” to slide into the base. I thought stealing was one of the harder parts of this game, mostly because the computer will almost always use their turbo if they have it.

Note: If you attempt a double steal, you will not get credit for either steal if either of your players gets caught (That is, if your guy gets thrown out at third, you don’t get credit for the guy that “stole” second). Go into Exhibition mode, give yourself a fast team (All star teams will work, but you can look around of course). Sub out any power hitters for speedy guys of course. Pick a bad team for the opponent, specifically one with a bad catcher (if you know anything about baseball). Nationals and Royals are a safe bet.

Next up is the specific achievements. Let’s start with this following one. Obviously the hard part of this achievement is getting the bases loaded and then guaranteeing yourself a grand slam. So let’s address this. Start off an exhibition game against some bad team (Royals, Nationals) and give yourself a good team (National League All Stars). Spend the first inning or so just lacing singles in, whatever, just get your star power up without allowing the computer to do the same.

Once you have your star power full, start putting singles around when you are up to bat. Use the “a” button and aim for the holes inbetween fielders. Remember, you control when the base runners run, so you’re more than capable of stopping them at a certain base. Do this multiple times until you have the bases loaded, then activate your star power, and bam! Grand slam.

I strongly recommend that you play through rookie challenge mode first before attempting this, since I got it in that mode. It’s a great way to give you 4 RBIs in one shot as well as a run scored and a home run, which equals meeting requirements and points for leveling up your rookie.

Let’s move onto this next one. In order to create a collision the fielder has to be throwing the ball home and you have to be running towards home. The throw has to be relatively close in order to trigger the mini-game. The mini-game requires you pressing the “A” button as fast as you can repeatedly in order to try to win (if you’re wondering you get a bigger advantage if you are a heavier player or if the ball isn’t quite there yet).

You don’t have to win the mini-game for this achievement to unlock. The easiest way to do this is to get a guy at third and hit a single. Then hold the guy at third a little longer than necessary and send him home at the last moment in an attempt to score. You do not have to be controlling the base runner for this mini-game to even pop up.

Next we will address Textbook Perfection and Penultimate Perfection. You’d have to be insane to not do these at the same time. But anyway, here’s what you need to do. It’s going to take a couple of playthroughs, so if you’re not up for the challenge, don’t bother. Set up an exhibition game with you as a great team (All Stars) versus a less than stellar team (Royals, Nationals). Now basically what you’ll want to do is, obviously, strike them out everytime. This is a great time to work towards the achievements for perfect pitches as well if you didn't tackle those yet, but it's fine if you did since the practice will help.

If the other team ever does get a hit off of you, or you do walk someone or hit a batter, you can restart if you so desire. Just throw perfect pitches, moving around the zone for best results. I honestly did this throwing just fastballs down the middle after three tries, if that makes any difference to you. Now here’s the part most people online won’t tell you. Yes, you’ll want to win (so the game ends after 9 innings), but you have to watch out for those turbo uses. If the opponent ever thinks they can beat out a ground ball, they’ll turbo it towards first base, which could ruin your streak. Worse yet, they could use the turbo for the automatic home run.

Therefore you want to score one run, and then be done with the whole matter. Use the “A” button to just get some singles to score your run. If you try to go for the homerun you are risking a wall-climb catch which equals big turbo points. After you get your run you might want to consider just bunting the ball down so that it is impossible for any spectacular play to be made. Don’t just sit there and strikeout, because those equal points as well. Save your star power for when you really need it (9th inning strikeouts, throwing a runner out at first). It’s just going to take effort and practice, one of the harder achievements in the game, and the TA ratio reflects that.

Lastly is the Homerun Pinball. This achievement did take me quite a while, so don't get too easily discouraged. You can do it eventually! I chose Vladdimir Guerrero of the Angels. You can choose whoever you want, but here’s some tips on everything.

Choose the same hitter every time once you get someone you like. Switching from left-handed to right-handed batters makes a substantial difference, and will throw off your aim/timing.

You need the multipliers to get big scores in this game. Take out all the letters on the signs on the left and right, or basically anything that looks paired. Once you do that you’ll activate a bonus sign for three pitches, which is basically randomly selected. These can include a bonus of 25,000 points, multi-ball (many balls come off your bat when you swing for a couple of turns), 2X bonus multiplier, etc. The most important one is the largest multiplier….

Every time you score points you’ll get closer to being able to activate the big power shot. You’ll want to save this until you get a multiplier. The “ball” that drops down during New Years is worth 50,000 points which is the largest amount in the area. If you get a big multiplier and hit that, you’re about one fourth of the way there. It is also notable that you get three pitches while you are in this big power mode, so you might as well take advantage of the other two big point areas. There is one in the back left and one in the back right. You can hit both while not in the big power mode, but they are substantially easier while you are.

Don’t forget you can try to aim where you hit the ball with the left control stick. Push forward for a high shot and push downward if you want a grounder. Push left, right, and straight accordingly. Also the “A” button will give you a “lighter” swing, which is good for close range targets, while the “B” button will give you a more power swing, good for the more far-away objects.
