The Banner Saga Walkthrough

3. Unit Classes

The Banner Saga has a large variety of unit classes all with their own strengths and weaknesses spread out between humans and Varl. Humans are split between ranged and melee classes while all Varl classes are melee based. On this page, I will give you a brief idea of the best characters in both Hakon and Rook's caravans as well as each characters ability, what rank you should aim for, and how you should upgrade their stats for maximum potential. That being said though it is much better for you to focus on 5-6 (maybe 7) specific heroes rather than spread your renown out between everybody.

You may find some stats are higher than what the rank advised on will allow, in these cases you should use equipped items to reach those extra stat values.

Classes will be listed below and how stats should develop. A Warhawk such as Gunnulf will be shown 9/16/3/2/1 (Armour/Strength/Willpower/Exertion/Break).

Rook's Caravan

Alette (Eagle Eye)

  • Passive Ability - Puncture - So long as the archer hasn't moved on their current turn they will do an extra +1 Strength damage to an enemy for every 2 armour points they have lost
  • Active Ability - Thread the Needle - Can be great if enough enemies are hit at once at higher levels
  • Rank 3
  • Stats - 8/9/6/3/2.

Oddleif (Skystriker)

  • Passive Ability - Puncture - So long as the archer hasn't moved on their current turn they will do an extra +1 Strength damage to an enemy for every 2 armour points they have lost
  • Ability - Rain of Arrows - Another great ability that is better used in the early/mid-game. Rain of Arrows has Oddleif lay a trap on the field. If an enemy steps on the trap they take damage as they normally would (Str-Arm) and it negates the rest of that units turn. Excellent for holding off stronger units like Scourge.
  • Rank 3
  • Stats - 8/8/5/3/2

Nid (Bowmaster)

  • Passive Ability - Puncture - So long as the archer hasn't moved on their current turn they will do an extra +1 Strength damage to an enemy for every 2 armour points they have lost
  • Ability - Bird of Prey - Allows Nid to extend her range by +2. Range increase is better at higher levels.
  • Rank 2
  • Stats - 6/8/7/3/2

Egil (Raidmaster)

  • Passive Ability - Shield Wall - When standing next to an ally both Egil and the ally gain +1 to their armour
  • Active Ability - Stone Wall - Negates 3, 5 or 7 damage depending on rank.
  • Rank 4
  • Stats - 12/9/5/3/3

Rook (Hunter)

  • Passive Ability - Light Step - Allows Rook to pass through friendly units when moving instead of having to go around them
  • Active Ability - Mark Prey - Deals 1/2/3 armour damage depending on rank and causes all allies within range to attack the target without spending their next turn. Great ability to use with a group of archers.
  • Rank - 3
  • Stats - 8/12/4/3/3

Iver (Strongarm)

  • Passive Ability - Return the Favour - Whenever he is hit, Iver will also deal +1 damage to the enemies armour
  • Active Ability - Battering Ram - Send an enemy a few spaces across the field and damages their armour. If they pass through other enemies, they also receive armour damage
  • Rank 4
  • Stats - 17/13/4/3/4

Hakon's Caravan

Gunnulf (Warhawk)

  • Passive Ability - Heavy Impact - Whenever you deal strength damage to an enemy, you also deal 1 strength damage to all enemy units adjacent to it
  • Active Ability - Tempest - Spinning attack that hits multiple enemies for full damage (Str-Arm) based on rank (2/3/4) in a clockwise motion. Hits both allies and enemies alike, so be careful of placement.
  • Rank - 5
  • Stats - 10/18/3/2/1

Hakon (Warmaster)

  • Passive Ability - Heavy Impact - Whenever you deal strength damage to an enemy, you also deal 1 strength damage to all enemy units adjacent to it
  • Active Ability - Sundering Impact - Does 1 damage to an enemies strength and armour. Any enemies hit by Heavy Impact as a result of this ability take 2 strength damage instead of 1
  • Rank 2
  • Stats - 9/15/4/3/2

Mogr (Shieldmaster)

  • Passive Ability - Return the Favour - Whenever he is hit, Iver will also deal +1 damage to the enemy's armour
  • Active Ablity - Bring the Pain - Deals your regular armour damage to an enemy and adds +1 armour damage to Return the Favour until your next turn
  • Rank - 3
  • Stats - 15/10/4/2/4

These are the main units you should look at upgrading. When using Hakon's caravan, feel free to upgrade other units to Rank 2 if you need it, but the rest should do fine at rank 1.
