The Banner Saga Walkthrough

7. Hard Playthrough

This playthrough will focus on getting the three remaining achievements. One will simply be for finishing the game on Hard difficulty and another will be for finishing the game on Hard without losing a single battle. The final achievement will be for winning a battle in the Training Tent after making camp with six characters at rank 5.

You are given two characters already at rank 5 (chapters five and six) with Eyvind and Sigbjorn leaving you with the option of four possible characters to pump up to rank 5. I highly recommend ranking up the following characters, having them equipped with the following items, and having their stats as shown:

Gunnulf

Gunnulf is a massive powerhouse. You can rank up Gunnulf extremely fast. In the first battle of the game (after the tutorial), use the other characters to lower the enemies armour then come in with Gunnulf and either attack them if they are alone or use Tempest for quick kills. You should be able to make Gunnulf either rank 2 or 3 just after that first fight. From there, ranking him up to 5 should be easy as you don't need to bother with supplies for Hakon's caravan.

  • Stats - 10/18/3/2/1
  • Items - Dundr's Hand - This gives Gunnulf an amazing 21 strength and makes it possible to destroy many units in one blow. Have Gunnulf's turn go after your breakers then send him in to finish them off.

Iver

Iver is your best breaker. Even after he loses his Return the Favour ability thanks to having no shield later on, he still has excellent armour and breakage potential.

  • Stats - 16/13/8/3/3
  • Item - Five Ring Necklace - Gives him 7 break potential with exertion

Egil

Iver's back-up. With his high armour stat (added to with his item) and Stone Wall you can just sit Egil in the middle of a pack of enemies and he will take no damage whatsoever. Only enemies that may scratch him are high level Scourge and Bellower.

  • Stats - 14/9/5/3/3
  • Item - Godscale - Gives Egil an armour stat of 17 making him an excellent tank

Rook

Becomes one of the best breakers in the game thanks to his item. While low strength/armour makes him squishy, his Light Foot ability makes it easy to get him behind Iver/Egil and out of danger. His item can be given to a tank-breaker but I find it better to have on a long-range character instead.

  • Stats - 10/12/4/3/3
  • Item - Farthingjord - Gives Rook 6 break minimum and a max of 9 break with full exertion use. Great for Stoneguards and lowering Scourge armour so Gunnulf can take them down quickly.

Eyvind

Eyvind isn't really the greatest character but his Arc Lightning and Mend abilities do prove very useful. Arc Lightning when used right can be devastating, but you have to be very careful not to get your allies caught in the crossfire. Mend is great for keeping your tanks upright.

  • Stats - 7/9/12/2/1 - You want max Willpower for Eyvind as both his abilites depend on using it a lot.
  • Item - Gullinfyri -Gives a 10% chance of critical hits (2x damage) when attacking strength. This can be extremely powerful when paired with Arc Lightning

Sigbjorn

Sigbjorn, as far as I am concerned, is not very good. His stats are preset when you get him and can't be upgraded and although being a Warhawk at rank 5, he only has 14 strength. His main saving grace is his item which gives him more movement. I tend to use him as a blocker for keeping enemies away from Rook & Eyvind rather than an offensive character.

  • Item - Scarlet Feather - Increases his movement so he can be a better blocker.

Once you have your party after leaving Rayvinik, quickly set up camp and enter the training tent where you will have to face a random mix of human and Varl enemies. The layout and enemy count is random so if you don't like what you see you can press cn_start and choose to exit the training session then try again. Once you are victorious you will unlock
