Chapter 1: Charlotte
After the cutscene you will gain control of Renee and begin outside the asylum.
Note: Before you begin I would alter the camera sensitivity in the options menu to make it much more sensitive, as turning the camera can be frustratingly slow.
Walk forward from where you start to the gate in front of you. The building to the left of the gate has a few newspaper articles attached to the fridge which relate to the time period in which the game is set. Open the gate and continue up the path until you see the asylum in front of you. There will be a hole in the fence on the left as you continue up the path; go through the hole and follow the narrow path downwards, keeping the stone wall on your right. Before you get to the staircase, you will see a small door on your right:
Go into the building (press to turn on your torch) and you will see a piece of paper on the wall in front of you which contains a bit of information about the asylum. Go down into the cellar to earn:
Exit the building, turn right and walk up the steps. Turn slightly left and walk forwards towards the door of the asylum.
Note: There are a couple of maps of the asylum for you to look at if you are unsure where a specific room is; one is located on the wall of the first room on the right as you enter the asylum and a second map is on the wall of the first-floor corridor.
Enter the door and then enter the first room on your left. Walk through the door on your right into another room, where you will see a shiny piece of paper on the bookcase in front of you. Pick it up to find Renee’s Diary Entry #1. Picking up the first collectable will reward you with:
To access the collectable you have just picked up; press to enter the synopsis menu, where you will have the option to look at experiences, diary pages, memories and medical records.
After picking up the diary page, exit through the door on your right, turn left and walk to the end of the corridor. You will find yourself on the main corridor which runs through the asylum. Before you make your way upstairs, turn left and head to the end of the hallway where you will find a breaker box. Open it and flip the switch in the top right corner to switch on the electricity.
Backtrack down the hallway until you reach the elevator on your left hand side. You don’t need to use the elevator yet, and can use the stairs which wind around the elevator to make it up to the first floor landing.
When you reach the first floor, turn right and enter the first room on your right. Head inside and interact with the metal surgical table for a short flashback. Then, exit the room and enter another room on the other side of the corridor and slightly to the left of you. Go through the first door on the right to enter a smaller room where you will find the doll Charlotte in a chair. Interact with the doll and watch a flashback.
Chapter 2: The Department
When you gain control of Renee again you will have Charlotte in your arms. Renee will say she is cold and needs to find somewhere to warm up. Head back down the stairs to the ground floor of the asylum and look left to see a wheelchair at the end of the corridor to the left of the door. Interact with the wheelchair to place Charlotte in it. You will then have to push the wheelchair over to the elevator and take it upstairs. To do this, let go of the wheelchair with and open the door to the elevator. Push the wheelchair inside, close the door and then press the button to activate the elevator. To exit the elevator, let go of the wheelchair again, open the door and then push the wheelchair out. Take the wheelchair into the main corridor, turn left, go through the doorway and then turn right into a room. You will see a glow of bright lights to the right. Place the wheelchair under the lights to warm Charlotte up.
Go back down to the ground floor and turn left to walk down to the end of the corridor. Open the door to enter the observation ward. Walk forward down the corridor past the shutting doors. When you come to what looks like a hole in the floor, step forward and the room will flip and you will continue walking. Continue down the corridors and walk towards the light in the doorway to end the scene.
When you gain control of Renee again you are strapped to a bed. Look left at the woman next to you until Renee begins to speak. The flashback will end and you will be in the same bed, but back in the present day.
Chapter 3: Obedience
After you get out of bed, walk forward and try to open the door. You will find that it is locked. Walk over towards the window and the door will be unlocked and opened. Leave the room, turn right and head down the hallway into the room at the end. You will see Charlotte on a desk to the right of you. Interact with the doll and you will be transported into another flashback. Walk through the patients and out of the door in front of you. You will see a man holding Charlotte; follow him into the bathroom and continue forward and to the left until you come to a bathtub, which will trigger a cutscene and end the flashback.
Chapter 4: Medical Examinations
When the flashback ends you will be back in the present and stood by the bath. Leave the bathroom via the way you came in during the flashback. At the end of the corridor, turn right and enter the first door on the right. You will see Renee’s Diary entry #2 on a bench on your right.
Exit the room, turn right and continue down the corridor and back into the original area you first had access to when you entered the asylum. Climb the stairs to the first floor and enter the gynaecology ward, which you can access by turning left at the top of the elevator and taking the first left. Once in the room, interact with the piece of paper on the chair with stirrups and listed to what Renee says to end the chapter.
Chapter 5: The Medical Record
Head out of the room and go back to the elevator area. Walk forward into the hallway opposite the elevator and head into the middle room on the right. Look left to see Renee’s Diary entry #3 on the bench. Continue into the next room on the right and examine the glowing folder on the desk. You will read a report about Renee and be asked a series of questions you will have to respond to. Choosing different responses will either allow you to start Chapter 6a or Chapter 6b, and there is an achievement for each chapter. For now, choose the options that start Chapter 6a, and we’ll come back to do 6b later.
To start chapter 6a choose option C and then A.
Shortly after you have made your decisions you will receive:
Go back down to the ground floor, turn left and exit the building through the door on the left (the one before you go through the archway into the wards). After exiting the building, turn left and you will see an area under construction in front of you. After the cutscene and some commentary from Renee, you will begin Chapter 6 and receive the following achievement:
Chapter 6: The Park
Walk forward to the construction area, over to the sand bags at the back of the area and to the right behind the netted fencing. Continue to the end of the scaffolding and walk to the end of the plank in front of you to receive:
Turn around and turn right to continue along the edge of the building. Here you can walk down the scaffolding and back to ground level. Once you are back on the ground, continue along the path, keeping the asylum on your left. After the image flashes up on screen, look to the right and you will see the next diary entry on a bench (Renee’s Diary entry #4) (the second bench after the path turns a corner). Collect the diary page and continue forward along the path until it turns 90 degrees to the left again. You will see a gap allowing you entry into the greenhouse. Enter the building and watch the quick image flash up on screen. You will then receive:
Walk to the end of the greenhouse and out of the door at the other end. Go left and walk through the door in front of you to enter the kitchen. Head straight through the kitchen and through the door on the other side. From here, enter the door on the far left, where you will find Renee’s Diary entry #5 on a mattress in the corner. Exit the room, turn left and open the closed door at the end of the corridor (the one that’s pretty dark). You will find yourself in a large boiler room with a set of stairs leading down to the water pumps.
Don’t head down the stairs yet; flip the light switch on the wall next to the steps to illuminate the room in front of you. Turn around, enter the room behind you and interact with the piece of paper on the desk. Turn around and go back into the now-lit room in front of you. Turn the valve on the wall labelled ‘Ward Baths’. Renee will tell you that the water is now running, but you must switch the boiler on to continue. Head back out to the larger room and go down the stairs to the boilers. There will be a piece of paper on the side of the boiler at the bottom of the stairs that tells you how to switch the boilers on.
First, close the door of the boiler, then interact with the wheels on the right hand side of the door to lock it in place. Turn the valve to the left of the boiler, turn around and flip the switch on the wall behind you and finally press the button in the middle of the boiler door to get it running.
Chapter 7: The Injections
Backtrack to the kitchens, turn left as you enter through the door and go forward through the corridor in front of you. Go up the stairs at the end of the corridor and you will find yourself back on the ground floor of the asylum.
Turn right when you enter the corridor and walk to the end and into Ward 2: Calm Women. Head into the first door on your left and interact with the chair. Leave and follow the hallway to the end, where you will get another flashback image. Renee’s Diary entry #6 will be on the table in front of you when you enter the room.
Leave the room and take the second left to enter the bathrooms. Walk forward and hang your clothes on the changing room hooks on the left. The scene will fade and be transformed into black and white. Interact with the handle to the right of the clothes to switch the water on. Turn around and walk to the end of the room, through the door and to the right.
Chapter 8: The Past
After the cutscene, leave the bathroom, turn left and head along the corridor until you reach the elevator on the left. Climb the steps to the second floor and head right at the top into Ward 3: Partially-agitated women. Head straight down the hallway and enter the open door on the left. Close the window shutters and the doors and turn the torch off to trigger another cutscene.
Chapter 9: Dear Mother
After gaining control of Renee again, turn around and pick up the note on the stand behind you. Make your choices to write the letter and leave the room, turn right and enter the second door on the right to get another flashback image. Next, leave the room and head into the room opposite you, where you will find Renee’s Diary Entry #7 on a stand by the window.
Leave this room, turn left and head back out into the main corridors of the asylum. Head straight to the other end of the corridor and enter the second door on your right once you enter the ward area for another flashback. Leave the room, turn right and enter the second door on the left to find the final collectable Renee’s Diary entry #8 on the desk to the left of you as you enter the room. If you haven’t missed any collectables you will receive:
Right next to the final collectable there will be a skull on the desk. Interact with it to receive:
Leave the room and turn left. Head down the corridor and go into the last door on the right to see another flashback image. Next, enter the big room at the end of the corridor and head to the far side of the shelves in front of you. Interact with the filing cabinet draw, two across and one up from the bottom, labelled 'R-S-T'. Interact with the folder inside the cabinet and listen to what Renee has to say.
After reading the letters, head to the left of the door to find a ladder. Interact with the shelf and then interact with the ladder to climb it, after which you can collect the parcel labelled Renee in front of you. Go to the table behind you and interact with it to open the bundle and interact with the doll inside.
Leave the room and head back to the main corridor in the asylum. Enter the room on the left where you will see Charlotte still in her chair.
Chapter 10: Stay Calm
Interact with Charlotte and watch the cutscene.
Chapter 11: Shadows of the Past
After the cutscene, walk forward and interact with the letter on the table in front of you.
You will be asked a series of multiple choice questions again; there are four different paths in the story here, and an achievement relating to each path. For now you can only unlock Chapters 12a and 12b. To unlock 12c and 12d, you will need to select the Chapter 6b route earlier in the story, which we’ll get to later. There is also another achievement you will get here, and for the purpose of this walkthrough we’ll go for that first:
Select options A, C, A, A, C, A, B and A to earn:
After receiving the achievement, reload Chapter 11 and choose one of the following options:
To move on to Chapter 12a choose: A, B, A, A, and A.
To move on to Chapter 12b choose: A, B, C, C, A, and B.
After answering the questions, it’s time to visit the archives. Turn around and exit the room through the door behind you. Turn right and go straight down the corridor all the way to the end to enter the archives. Go around the shelves in front of you and interact with the top left draw of the cabinet labelled ‘A-B’ and when the draw opens interact with the file inside. Listen to what Renee says and watch the cutscene.
Chapter 12: The Dark
When the chapter begins you will earn:
Depending on which options you made earlier to start chapter 12a or 12b.
If you want to get the other achievement for starting chapter 12a/12b now, reload the game again from chapter 11, choose the related options and replay the game to this point so you have both achievements. Or, you can just wait until you finish the game, reload chapter 11 and go from there.
You will find yourself outside in the grounds of the asylum. Walk through the gates and into the graveyard to earn:
Interact with three gravestones in the graveyard and Renee will comment on how there are no names on the stones. Exit the graveyard and turn right, walking along the path until you come to a gate and the path splits. Take the left hand fork through the gate and walk through the garden to the empty vineyard to earn:
Exit the garden and go left as you exit the gate. Continue along the path, keeping the graveyard on your right, until you see a small shed up on the hill on your left. Walk up to the shed, go around the back of it and walk up to the orange netting around the lake. You will receive:
Walk back down to the path and continue walking clockwise along the path that runs around the graveyard. As you continue along the path you will see a gap in the trees on your left and a vineyard within the gap. Walk up to the vines to receive:
Now you have visited all the areas in the grounds relating to achievements in this chapter, it’s time to go back to the asylum. Return to the path and turn right to backtrack along the path that runs around the graveyard (keeping the graveyard on your left). Go back past the shed on the hill and you will see a major split in the path, where the right fork leads up the steep hill towards an electricity sub-station. Go up that path and take the right hand side fork which will weave up the hill. If you are going the right way, Renee will comment every now and again.
At the top of the hill you will see a tree that has fallen over the path; go under it and to the left, so that you have a wooden railing on your left and the asylum will be in front of you. Continue following the path and you will find yourself back where you were at the very start of the game.
Follow the path upwards, go through the gap in the fence on the left and go back to the entrance to the asylum. Go into the first room on the right as you enter the asylum and Renee will direct you to reception. Exit the room and go straight into the admissions room in front of you. Interact with the piece of paper on the table and watch the cutscene.
Chapter 13: Childhood
You will find yourself outside a school building. Walk forward through the gate, up the stairs and into the building. Walk forward through the long corridor until you reach a crossroads where the corridor in front of you slopes upwards and the scene returns from black and white to colour.
You will now have to collect all 17 of the child’s drawings (by interacting with them on the wall) to get the achievement before the time runs out. There is no visible timer for you to see and pausing the game does not pause the timer. However, hitting the guide button does pause the timer so use that if you are following the walkthrough for this section. Here’s a good video walkthrough of the locations of all drawings:

I don’t think you are particularly pushed for time in this section of the game, as I managed to collect all of the drawings first time without a walkthrough by just walking up and down random hallways without thinking too much about where I was going, and I did stop to listen to the dialogue at each picture. The route you can take to find all the drawings is as follows:
- On the left side of the corridor before it slopes up, right at the start of the area.
- On the right side of the corridor before it slopes up, easily seen from drawing #1.
- Turn around from #2 and go through the door slightly to the left of you. Drawing #3 is a picture of a house on the right hand side wall as you turn the corner.
- Backtrack along the corridor and back to the starting corridor. Go up the sloping corridor between drawing #1 and drawing #2, turn the corner and the drawing is on the right hand side wall.
- Continue along the corridor that slopes upwards and at the top of the slope go through the left hand side door. The drawing is on the right hand side wall.
- Turn around and go back to the sloping corridor. Go through the door straight in front of you and follow that corridor until you see drawing #6 on the wall in front of you.
- Continue along the corridor and follow it as it slopes downwards. The next drawing will be at the bottom of the slope on the right hand side wall.
- Continue along the corridor and you will find yourself back in the main corridor. Turn right at drawing #1, go past drawing #2 and go through the door on the right before the corridor slopes upwards (you went this way earlier but will have to take another path this time). Go past the house drawing and follow the corridor as it slopes down. Go through the first door on the right and follow the sloping corridor upwards. The next drawing will be on the left side wall as you are climbing the sloping corridor.
- Continue up the sloping corridor until you come back to where you started. As you enter the main corridor, turn right (don’t go past drawings #1 and #2 – go the other way down the corridor) and follow that corridor all the way to the end and down to the left, where you will see the next drawing in front of you.
- Continue along the corridor and downwards. At the bottom of the slope, the corridor will turn left and slope upwards slightly. Go through the door and the next drawing is on the left hand side wall.
- Go through the door opposite drawing #10 and follow the corridor until you see the next drawing on the left hand side wall.
- Continue along the corridor. When the corridor turns right you will see a doorway on your left. Don’t go through that doorway yet, instead carry straight on, turn right and you will see the next drawing on the left hand side wall.
- Backtrack along the corridor; this time go through the door on your right. You will see the next drawing on the wall in front of you.
- Turn left at drawing #13 and go down the slope. Follow the corridor down and to the left until you see the next drawing in front of you.
- Continue down the slope and you will see the next drawing in front of you on the right hand side wall, before the corridor turns to the left.
- Turn around once you have collected drawing #15 and go through the doorway on the left. Go up the slope, left as you go through the doorway and take the first right. You will see the next drawing on the wall in front of you, slightly hidden around the corner.
- For the final drawing, continue along this corridor and turn right twice, where you will see drawing #17 in front of you.
Once you have collected all 17 drawings you will receive:
The scene will fade; watch the cutscene and you will return to the asylum.
Chapter 14: Loneliness
The door in front of you is locked so turn around and interact with the document on the bed. Turn around again and the door will now be open. Exit the room, turn left and left again to make your way along the corridor through the dilapidated building. Turn left when your path is blocked by several fallen beams, and go right to make your way around the back of the beams and continue onwards. Interact with the piece of paper on the stand before you exit the room into a well-lit room.
Turn left, go forward and open the door on the left by the hole in the floor. Go through the room and put the reel on the projector and then interact with it to hear Renee speaking. Once she’s finished speaking, continue through the door to the right of you. You will hear a phone start to ring; go through the door on the left and interact with the phone on the desk, and then interact with the telegram on the desk.
Turn around and walk through the door on the opposite side of the room to the desk. Walk past the shelves on the left and through the door on the right. Continue forward until you come to another wall of shelves, then turn to the right and walk forward into the room with the scaffolding. Walk right at the scaffolding and through a door on the right before you get to the boarded up doors. Go down the stairs and through the door on the right. The door leading to the asylum grounds will open in front of you. Walk outside and forward, turn left at the wheelchair and walk towards a door that will open as you approach.
Walk through the door, turn left and go through the door on the right at the end of the corridor. After some dialogue, another door will open and you can go through it. Another door will open and you can go through it to see someone in a bed. Another door will open; go through it and turn left twice to go through the door next to the one you just came from. Follow this corridor to another room, and interact with the surgery bed, where you will unlock:
Watch the final cutscene to end the game.
Replaying the Game
Now that you’ve finished the main story, all that you will have left to do is replay through certain chapters to choose different options in the multiple choice questions and play through the other story routes.
Select Chapter 5, pick up the document in front of you and choose the options to select Chapter 6b:
To start chapter 6b choose option B, A, A, B, B and A.
Follow the same route as you did during Chapter 6a; go back down to the ground floor, turn left and exit the building through the door on the left. After exiting the building, turn left and walk forward to trigger a cutscene, after which you will begin Chapter 6 and receive:
You will then have to play through the story again to Chapter 11 and choose the following options to unlock Chapters 12c and 12d:
To move on to Chapter 12c choose: A, B, C, A, and C.
To move on to Chapter 12d choose: C, A, C, A and C.
Again, head to the archives at the far end of the corridor. This time, instead of interacting with the drawer turn right as you walk in the door and pick up the bundle of Amara’s things. Walk over to the well-lit table by the window and interact with the table to put the bundle down to open it. Interact with the diary.
Leave the room and go through the first door on the right. Go to the lockers on the left hand side of the room and pick up the square music box in one of the lockers. Go out of the room and turn right, walking along the corridor until you come to the elevator on the right. Go down the stairs, turn left and go through the door on the left to head back outside.
To get to the pavilion, turn right as you come out of the door to head along the edge of the building. Turn slightly to the right to head through the gap in the corner of the mesh fencing that runs around the asylum grounds. Turn left and head along the main path as it turns the corner and when the path splits into two take the right hand side fork. Follow the path up towards the building and follow the metal railings around to the left. Open the gate on your left and head forward until the scene fades.
After the cutscene you will earn:
To unlock the final achievements of the game (related to Chapters 12a, b, c or d, depending on which you have chosen already) reload the correct story route and play through the game to receive the final achievements.
For completing Chapter 12a, or
For completing Chapter 12b: select Chapter 11 of the Chapter 6a route (the route along the top of the chapter select screen).
For completing Chapter 12c, or
For completing Chapter 12d: select Chapter 11 of the Chapter 6b route (the route along the bottom of the chapter select screen).
Congratulations, that’s all the achievements in The Town of Light and you will now have completed the game!
