- Devil by The Well (3) - Notice board in White Orchard
After a couple of cut-scenes, you will be directed to an inn for more information on your hunt. You can now get your second achievement at this inn. After talking to the inn-keeper and you’re back in control of Geralt, you will be given the objective of interrogating the patrons at the inn. You will get talking to a scholar who will also teach you the rules of playing Gwent. Play him, and if you win, you will earn one of the missable cards in the deck, Zoltan Chivay. If you lost, just play the scholar again and you'll get your chance to win the card. But don't worry if you're still getting the hang of the game. You can still get the card later on in the game. However, if you do win the Zoltan card, go to your Gwent deck in the save menu () and add Zoltan to your deck. Now go back and play the scholar again. Play all your cards if necessary, except for the Zoltan card which will likely leave the scholar without a card for the next round. Now play ONLY the Zoltan card and you should win the round. You will hence have won a round with only a neutral card and earn the achievement Geralt and Friends.
Soon after this, you can get another achievement. When you’re done talking to Gaunter O’Dimm, step outside.
Choose the option ‘One on 3’ and you’ll start a fist fight with one of them. Jump back immediately the fight starts to avoid getting hit. Dodge and counter his blows and use quick blows to knock him out without him hitting you. You should get the achievement Fist of the South Star here.
Not to worry if you don’t get it. Plenty of other opportunities. You can take the Twisted Firestarter side quest from the blacksmith and still get your chance. (Thanks to Little 3vil For that tip)
Before going to the Nilfgaardian camp, go to the notice board and take on all the contracts. One in particular you want to take is the Devil by the Well contract. This will work up to the Geralt: The Professional achievement and you can also use this to get Even Odds achievement. For Even Odds, you will need to kill 2 monsters without using potions, oils, signs, bombs or decotions. Go to the house and follow the objectives of the quest, before returning at noon. If this is your first serious fight, it can prove a bit tricky without using Yrden but it can be done on level 1. Stock up on your foods (maybe just bread and water at this level) to restore your health when needed, and dodge often. Get in a few attacks, then back away. You should eventually prevail.
Next go to Nilfgaardian camp and meet the base commander.
Go meet the hunter and help him with a simple task before he takes you to site. Follow clues to complete that bit of quest. Next go to herbalist. She’ll also give you simple task that requires herbs. You can collect the herbs around her place (or buy them from her). After that, she’ll direct you to place to get another herb for the quest. Go get the herb, get Vesemir at the inn and set up an ambush. Once again, use only your silver sword. You can also use the crossbow. Use the crossbow to bring down the griffin when it dives for you then, do heavy attack. Dodge and use quick attacks when it lunges for you. Save your heavy attacks for when Vesemir distracts the griffin. Do this until you kill of the griffin. If you didn’t use any potions, magic or bombs, ‘Even Odds’ achievement should pop.
Kill 2 monsters you have a contract on without using Signs, potions, mutagens, oils or bombs.
Next you can go for the ‘Kaer Morhen Trained’ achievement. You get this by performing 10 counter attacks without getting damage. You need human enemies for this and you can get this easily when exploring White Orchard. I got mine on my way to the Missing in Action side quest. Just before you get to Dune Vildenvert’s home, there’s an undiscovered location (bandits camp) in some ruined buildings.
Climb up and prepare to fight 4 bandits. Make sure you leave a sword-wielding thug to do the counters with. I couldn’t counter the axe-wielding thug. Man, he had fun with me! Anyway, take care of the axe dude and the archer. Kill one of the other sword guys then do the counters with the remaining guy. Trick is to wait until his health flashes red, then press . Counter 10 times in a row without getting hit, and achievement pops. Video here shows how to get it and my location, but you can do this any other place. Make sure to loot the camp. There’s a treat here in the Diagram for Viper Steel Sword, which also starts the Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear quest. Complete this quest to get the Viper Silver Sword diagram. Both are powerful swords and you should get the items for crafting them easily.
Kaer Morhen Trained
Perform 10 effective counterattacks in a row without getting hit or parrying.
You definitely want to take on the side quests and explore the undiscovered locations for the XP and other goodies. Some of the undiscovered locations are Places of Power that give you power bonuses. You still want to find these power sources since they give an ability point, so you might as well get the Power Overwhelming achievement. This is for having all power bonuses active at the same time.
The first stop should be the nearby place of power. It's right next to where you found the dead griffin. Activating a Place of Power gives you a buff to a Sign and also an ability point on your first use. Here's the location:
Next, let's head to the deserter camp just to the southeast of the place of power (it's a question mark on the map above).
There's also another place of power to the east of the Abandoned Village. It's guarded by a sleeping level 6 bear, but if you're careful you can sneak up and get the power without needing to kill the bear.
The third place of power is in the northeast, just to the north of the battlefield we visited earlier with Dune and his dog. There's a ghoul nest right in front of it, but you can avoid the ghouls and safely get your ability point by running through them on your horse (you won't be able to loop around from the north).
The fourth is north of the Mill. There's a level 7 wraith here to fight. Luckily it's not too tough. Keep Quen up and be careful. The wraith will disappear and reappear behind you. When it does, dodge backwards once or twice. It will swing once and then spin. Once it spends, move in and get a few hits on it before backing up. Being careful makes this a piece of cake.
The fifth is just a bit farther to the north. There's another nest here and this one can't be ignored. Kill the enemies and collect the power.
The sixth and final of White Orchard for good measure, is west of the Mill on the other side of the river. It too is guarded by a wraith. After your practice with the first, this one should be quick and painless.
Have all possible Place of Power bonuses active at the same time.
If like me you decide to explore the rest of the undiscovered sites, you should eventually unlock the Let’s Cook achievement for learning 12 potion formulae. But this should come naturally in you gameplay progression.
When you’re good and ready, get back to the inn to continue the main story. Make sure you’ve completed all the quests taken or they’ll fail once you start talking to Vesemir. Talk to Vesemir, who will warn you that something is simmering with the locals in the inn. You can get The Butcher of Blaviken achievement here for killing 5 opponents in less than 10 seconds. I should mention that I had the Viper swords by this point. When the locals get attacking, use Igni to get them, then hack and slash them as they burn. Also use Aard and you might knock over one who you can kill instantly once on the ground. But you’ll soon get a chance to get this achievement, so don’t chase it too hard if you’re struggling.
This next achievement is unmissable and related to the main quest.
This will unlock the achievement;
