7. Mopping Up
Geralt is now heading towards the climax of the story and it is a good idea to get your affairs in order. Finish your pending side quests now. We can also grind out some of those achievements that you didn’t get naturally in the gameplay, those this can also be done after finishing the game.
It’s always a good idea to occasionally check your contracts and see if you’re ready to take on them at your current level. One that I had left for later in Velen was the Mystery of the Byways Murders. The contract will get you to Byways village that’s been overrun by ghouls. Kill off the ghouls and interrogate the villagers, who won’t be that cooperative. Eventually, you’ll get the answer and you’ll end up in tunnels beneath the village, where you’ll fight an ekimmara vampire, Sarasti. It’s a tough fight, but Igni works well as well as Vampire Oil. Collect your trophy, and go talk to the villager. You will get a reward and 15G for the achievement.
As you’re mopping up your contracts, there’s one you probably got in Novigrad that you saved for later; Doors Slamming Shut. This isn’t a hard contract to do if you’re at the right level. Once you get the contract from Kurt Dysart, he’ll direct you to his haunted mansion. Simple investigation will direct you into the basement of the mansion. You’ll find out that there’s an earth elemental, Therazane, that’s trapped down here behind the door. You will need to swim to the far left, climb up and activate the switch that opens the door. Equip Elemental Oil to make the fight easier and have Quen as your sign. Now go back and into the room to face Therazane. First though, you’ll need to release it. Simple fight and use Quen to avoid damage, and hack away. Once down, collect your trophy and head back to Kurt for your reward. Once you complete the contract, you will unlock...
There should be one cumulative achievement that you didn’t get in the course of the game: Humpty Dumpty for killing 10 enemies by knocking them off somewhere high with Aard. You might have been lucky to get this as you were playing, but it is hard to find good candidates to take the fall in normal game-play. You’ll likely have to grind this one out and the best place for this is at Devils Pit in Velen, just a bit Southeast of Hanged Man’s Tree. They’re bandits in the pit with many high platforms here and you can get the bandits up there and easily knock them off with Aard. There aren’t enough bandits to get this in one round though. Fast travel out of Velen, then get back to Devil’s Pit to find the thugs respawned. Rinse and repeat until Humpty Dumpty pops.
Kill 10 opponents by knocking them off somewhere high with the Aard Sign.
Chances are you've already gotten Environmentally Unfriendly for killing 50 opponents using the environment. The 'environment' is this case isn't very clear and much as this should be exploding swamp gas and barrels, Geralt's signs also count to the achievement. Knocking bandits from horses with Aard and killing them counts, as does using Aard on Harpies and Wyverns. Upgraded Quen with knock-back also seems to works as does stunning with Axii before an execution kill. If you haven't gotten this yet, you shouldn't have much to do and you can grind out the remaining kills in the swamps of Velen that are full of swamp gas and drowners. Equip Igni and draw the drowners towards the gas as you're fighting them. A blast of Igni should kill any drowners. You will eventually get your 50 kills unlocking Environmentally Unfriendly.
If you have been keen on your character development, chances are you already have unlocked the achievement for filling all mutagen slots. You unlock the last mutagen slot at level 28 and chances are you’ve already hit that level by now. You also likely have a ton of mutagens collected, especially from necrophages. Place mutagens in any empty slots and once you have all four filled you will unlock Mutant.
You should also have unlocked all the inn-keepers and merchants that you need to play to get all the gwent cards. Remember to also check their stock. You might find they’re selling the very cards you’re missing. Don’t forget to consult your handy Miraculous Guide to Gwent book to let you know the areas that have your missing cards. If you followed the guide and completed the gwent quests, you should have gotten all the missable cards. So you can continue with your search at any point, even post-game. Completing the gwent decks gets you the Card Collector achievement.
Acquire all gwent cards available in the base version of the game.
